The commissioner will open with some opening statements and then we’ll take questions. COMMISSIONER DAVID STERN: My opening statements will be short. There’s nothing that you haven’t heard before. We’re coming off what we think is one of our best ...
David Stern Almost Shits Himself
2008-04-29 05:54:00 Forget about game one of the Suns-Spurs series. Forget about past and future heroics of Kobe and LeBron. The greatest moment of the NBA playoffs came in tonight’s Boston-Atlanta game. Just moments after TNT interviewed David Stern (and Stern pretended to be excited about the Hawks strong play jeopardizing his plans for a Lakers-Celtics Finals) Kevin Garnett gave Zaza Pachulia a little elbow. Pachulia did not take kindly to that elbow and jumped in Garnett’s face. Joe Johnson stepped in between them, but Sam Cassell thought Johnson was a little too aggressive and he went after him. Almost instantly all 10 players were jawing and both coaches were on the court trying to clam things down. Right at that moment TNT cut to a shot of Stern in the crowd. I want that producer promoted. The look on Stern’s face was priceless. You knew exactly what was going through his head. Fuck. Now I have to call TNT and tell them to tell Nike we have to cancel half of their pla...

Isiah Thomas Found Guilty Of Sexual Harassment
2007-10-03 00:42:00 Of course, as we predicted Isiah was found guilty of harassing Anucha Browne Sanders and MSG will be forced to fork over $11.6 million dollars. Do you have any idea how many cases of Heineken she’ll be able to purchase with all that money??? What’s funny about all this, is even though Isiah has been ...

David Stern might kill someone
2007-09-13 23:24:00 The NBA's top draft pick, Greg Oden, will miss his rookie season after undergoing surgery today. Read more: After the referee scandal from this summer, you wouldn't have thought things could get worse for Stern and the NBA. And yet here we have another nightmare worst-case scenario. The anticipation of watching Oden-Durant divisional clashes this year was one of the few remaining reasons to be excited about this league. -Mike

David Stern Press Conference [David Stefanini]
2007-07-24 23:21:00 From David Stern's press conference:Good morning. We're here today to discuss the ongoing investigation into certain allegations about NBA referee, Tim Donaghy. What I propose to do is to tell you what our procedures are with respect to referees and gambling; what we can or cannot tell you and why there are certain things we can't tell you that might have made it easier not to have this press conference at this time, but we thought it was our obligation to have it; what previous actions we have known about with respect to Mr. Donaghy, what we did about those, and what we are permitted to say about Mr. Donaghy and the investigation and when we learned about those facts. And then I'll open it up to questions and spend quite a bit of time here to satisfy you on all of the things that I'm able to. The first thing that I would like to say is that our rules are crystal clear; that referees may not either gamble on our games; or, provide information to anyone about those games. We,...

RE: NBA Ref May Have Bet on Own Games [David Stefanini]
2007-07-21 07:41:00 First I would like to say I think this is my fault. It seems this week all of my favorites are being thrown into the flames of hell. First we had the Michael Vick incident. This is my idol, the man I said I was when I was in the school yard in 8th grade running around the opponents left and right. Now the game I love the most, basketball, is coming under fire.I can not agree with J. Mark English any more. When he says, "I don't think people quite realize or grasp the concept that gambling in sports from the very people involved in that sport is a cardinal sin" he can not be more correct. It seems a lot of us turn the other way or say it is ok, but the fact is it simply isn't.If it turns out over the past few years this NBA official has been shaving points off a game this will be catastrophic to the NBA. Right now they are the third out of the four major sports in America. They will likely never catch baseball or football, and certainly will never fall below hockey (if that still i...

NBA Commissioner David Stern Reacts [J. Mark English]
2007-07-21 00:23:00 "As we previously stated, we have been cooperating with the FBI in their investigation of allegations that a single NBA referee bet on NBA games that he officiated. As part of that cooperation, we were asked by the Government not to comment about the investigation, but in light of the widespread press coverage and the naming of the referee, Tim Donaghy, we consider it appropriate to make a fuller statement. "We would like to assure our fans that no amount of effort, time or personnel is being spared to assist in this investigation, to bring to justice an individual who has betrayed the most sacred trust in professional sports, and to take the necessary steps to protect against this ever happening again. We will have more to say at a press conference that will be scheduled for next week." - David Sternhttp://img68.imageshack.us-/my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5w-j.gif

NBA Ref May Have Bet on Own Games [J. Mark English]
2007-07-20 15:38:00 I recall Jeff Van Gundy a few years ago being muzzled for complaining that it was as if the Rockets were being treated unfairly by refs because they were trying to affect the outcome. Van Gundy was fined for throwing out such suggestions with out any proof. And now this story from Murray Weiss of the New York Post comes out:THE FBI is investigating an NBA referee who allegedly was betting on basketball games - including ones he was officiating during the past two seasons - as part of an organized-crime probe in the Big Apple, The Post has learned. The investigation, which began more than a year ago, is zeroing in on blockbuster allegations that the referee was making calls that affected the point spread to guarantee that he - and the hoods who had their hooks in him - cashed in on large bets. Federal agents are set to arrest the referee and a cadre of mobsters and their associates who lined their pockets, sources said. "These are dangerous people [the referee] was involved with,"...

David Stern wants you to hate him
2007-07-07 18:17:00 I just got done watching Portland vs. Boston in the Las Vegas Summer League (analysis of Portland here, and Boston here). I barely caught the game, allow me to elaborate before my head explodes: A rant directed towards Mr. David Stern, who may or may not have had anything to do with the obstacle I

David Stern Isn't Watching Either?
2007-06-15 22:07:00 David Stern isn't watching either? Is there anything on TV tonight? We all know that the NBA Finals has been about as exciting as the next Britney Spears crotch shot, but did anyone expect David Stern to admit it. Publicly. The Commish said bluntly, > We've had, shall I say, inelegant games.

David Stern, Re-Seed the Playoffs
2007-06-13 21:28:00 Everyone has said it, these NBA Finals are garbage. No one has enjoyed watching this slaughter. All the Cavaliers and LeBron are getting out of this is invaluable playoff experience. The fans however are getting nothing out of this. The Finals ratings are terrible and the only way to make sure

Fellowship of the Leagues
2007-06-04 22:03:00 Roger Goodell has clearly been eager to mark his territory in the NFL, instituting a player conduct policy that severely punishes anybody who steps out of line. This policy was enacted because the NFL wanted to clean up its image in the wake of Cincinnati prisons becoming housing for the Bengals, and players like Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson having their own problems.Goodell's sudden presence made me think: what would the other traditional professional leagues be like if the commissioners traded places? That is, what if the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB had to switch commissioners? How would things be different today if Bud Selig ran the NFL, Roger Goodell ran the NHL, Gary Bettman ran the NBA and David Stern ran MLB?- Bud Selig, NFL Commissioner:Due to Selig ignoring the steroid and human growth hormone crisis, players have grown to enormous sizes, and violent hits on kickoff and punt returns have tragically led to their heads flying clean off their bodies upon contact. Revulsed by seein...
A Letter to David Stern
2007-05-23 16:15:00 Dear Commissioner, I am writing to you today not out of anger, but out of gratitude. I want to sincerely thank you for creating the NBA Draft lottery. No, I am not a fan of the Portland Trail Blazers or Seattle Supersonics, I am a Boston Celtics fan. You are probably wondering why I would be

NBA All-Star Weekend Beats the SuperBowl
2007-02-28 01:02:00 I read an article in the San Diego Union Tribune the other day that I wanted to share:"Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star took in the NBA's All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas, and this is his (printable) report: '"All-Star Weekend has one huge advantage over the Super Bowl, the other sporting event that sparks major partying. This weekend is just as much - if not more - a women's event as a man's. This is probably a byproduct of the basketball game being a complete afterthought... David Stern could cancel the game, and the event wouldn't suffer at all. Women would still show p by the truckload hoping to dance with Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, LeBron James and anyone else taller than 6 feet 4. A typical Super Bowl party will have 10 men for every woman. All-Star Weekend parties are split pretty much right down the middle... Again, we're talking about The Perfect Storm of ghettofabulousness - booze, babes, gambling, celebrities, a dunk contest and ... |
