Odds And Ends: Benitez, David Wells, Delgado
2008-05-10 18:46:00
And for my first trick: My very first Odds and Ends. The Toronto Star's aptly named Blue Jay's blog reports the team placed Vernon Wells on the 15-day DL, and they expect him to be out six to eight weeks after fracturing his left wrist during Friday night's game. The Jay's also placed reliever Jeremy Accardo on the 15-day DL with a strained right forearm. As replacements, the Jays will call up infielder Joe Inglett and veteran hurler Armando Benitez. With Wells out, do the Jays re-enter the Barry Bonds speculation market? David Wells in Pinstripes? No deal says Joe Girardi. Wells did look comfy during a recent appearance on the not-aptly-called Best Damn Sports Show Period. Mets manager Willie Randolph had penciled slugger Carlos Delgado in the seventh spot before Friday's game against the Reds (postponed due to rain), marking the lowest spot he's been slotted at in 12 years. Delgado didn't see it as a demotion, but still, in light of the recent talk about his release, it rai...
David Wells A Possibility For Yankees?
2008-05-09 11:35:00
Mike Puma of the New York Post has comments from free agent lefty David Wells and Hank Steinbrenner indicating a third tour with the Yankees is possible.  Boomer's interest is obvious, while Steinbrenner seems intrigued.  Before Brian Cashman gets involved and discussions occur, the Yankees will see how Darrell Rasner and Kei Igawa fare.  Wells had some choice words for Joe Torre, so don't expect him back in L.A. How does Wells stack up with Rasner and Igawa, according to Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA projection system?  Wells - 4.80Igawa - 5.15Rasner - 5.24 Not much of a difference in the projected ERAs, but Wells would be a fun story.  He managed to make 29 starts last year, but at 5.4 innings per he'd definitely give the bullpen a workout.  Then again, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy were averaging about four.  Fun fact - Roy Halladay is averaging 8.14 innings per start this year.  Only Halladay and C.C. Sabathia averaged more than seven inn...
David Wells has company on the DL (Diabetes List)
2008-03-11 22:47:00
Looks like rehab didn’t come early enough in Dmitri Young’s career. And by rehab I mean going cold turkey on the Denny’s buffet. Young, who gained 55 lbs during the off season, showed up to camp weighing 300 lbs and announced he has Type 2 diabetes, the same affliction that Boomer Wells developed after a long career (drinking beer and eating wild animals)."I'll know when I'm in playing shape," Young was quoted as saying. "That's being able to run and not get gassed, not cramping up. Being able to do everything -- get down on a ground ball, slide, doing everything that's baseball-related and not being fatigued afterwards."This is a joke right? How can he expect to play baseball when he works up a full sweat putting on his batting helmet? Are the Nats serious about putting him out in the field? Granted he’d probably do a great job of eating up balls hit down the first base line.Throwing Smoke - Bringing Real Justice since 2006. Smack is always on the menu, yo.
David Wells Denied By Cardinals
2008-02-25 08:57:00
David Wells' agent, Gregg Clifton, reached out to the Cardinals recently to see if his client could assist them  with their early season rotation uncertainty.   It's been said that Boomer, 44, is looking to make about 20 starts this year.  He earned $3MM in '07. Derrick Goold says the Cardinals prefer their in-house options over Wells.  What does PECOTA have to say about this?David Wells - 4.55 ERAAnthony Reyes - 4.32 ERABrad Thompson - 4.29 ERATodd Wellemeyer - 4.39 ERA Seems the Cardinals are on track with this one.  I'm sure they'd be ecstatic to get those ERAs out of that trio.  Goold says the Cards will continue to track free agents.  Kyle Lohse and Jeff Weaver are two who are healthy right now, if nothing else.  As for Roger Clemens, the Cards aren't terribly interested given Clemens' probable late start.

David Wells gets win in Dodgers debut as Los Angeles beats Mets 6-2 (AP)
2007-08-27 06:16:00
Boomer may not be done after all. David Wells pitched five effective innings in his Dodgers debut and Los Angeles beat the New York Mets 6-2 on Sunday night to salvage the finale of the three-game series. Juan Pierre and Matt Kemp each had two hits and two RBIs for the Dodgers, who pulled within ...
David Wells joins Dodgers, scheduled to pitch Sunday night against Mets (AP
2007-08-25 03:59:00
David Wells slipped a crisp, blue Dodgers cap onto his shaved head and wiggled into a baggy pair of baseball pants. Then he dashed up the runway to throw a quick bullpen session. Boomer is back in the pennant race — and he doesn’t have much time to prepare for his first start with Los ...
David Wells signs contract with Dodgers (AP)
2007-08-25 01:09:00
David Wells made it official Friday, signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the rest of the season. Wells’ agent, Gregg Clifton, said late Thursday the parties had reached a tentative agreement and the 44-year-old left-hander would pitch Sunday night against the Mets in New York. The Dodgers made room for Wells by designating right-hander ...

Dodgers To Sign David Wells
2007-08-23 23:28:00
UPDATE: Dan Graziano's source says Wells is close to signing with the Dodgers. Back on Monday, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe broke down the David Wells situation.  At the time of his writing Wells seemed likely to retire.  The sticking point is $1.13MM in incentives Boomer could've earned with San Diego - he wants his new team to pay up.  Four clubs inquired, with the Rockies and Dodgers confirmed.  When Ken Rosenthal wrote on the topic that same day, he said the Rockies would pass.  The Mark Redman signing probably puts the nail in that coffin. Breaking down the candidates: According to the L.A. Times today, the Dodgers still appear interested.  Brett Tomko's stinker last night didn't hurt.  The Mets could be one of the mystery teams. The Diamondbacks and Mariners appear to be out.  I've speculated in the past that the Braves might consider signing Wells.  The Phillies have a heightened need with Cole Hamels' injury.  T...
Rosenthal's Latest: Damon, Glaus, Wells
2007-08-20 19:50:00
Ken Rosenthal has a new column up; here are some rumor-related points of interest. As you know, it doesn't make sense for the Yankees to keep both Bobby Abreu and Johnny Damon around for 2008.  It's just not an efficent way to spend $29MM.  Rosenthal says Damon would be open to waiving his no-trade clause, if the Yankees struck a deal with a team that fell under his 12-team protection.  Damon is apparently open to regular playing time on teams not located on the West Coast.  The White Sox, Phillies, Braves, or Astros might make sense, in my opinion.  The Yanks' ability to pull an exercise-and-trade with Abreu's 2008 option is hindered by his full no-trade protection. Rosenthal believes the Blue Jays might aggressively shop Troy Glaus this winter.  Glaus surprisingly cleared waivers recently.  Glaus is holding all the cards - he has a full no-trade clause and a player option for 2009. The Rockies will pass on David Wells, but the Dodgers are sti...
Dodgers, Rockies Interested In David Wells
2007-08-17 05:06:00
Who wants seven starts from David Wells?  Apparently the Rockies and Dodgers do, as both teams have already inquired.  Wells is now a free agent. I say seven starts because Boomer still has a seven-game suspension to serve.  We knew from this morning's Denver Post that the Rockies were considering Wells, though that article cited only "internal discussions."  Well it's external now, baby.  The Dodgers were also under heavy speculation with the whole West Coast thing, and now they're officially in the game. var random_number = Math.random(); if (random_number
Where's David Wells Headed?
2007-08-12 17:40:00
Another August, another David Wells trade.  Which teams would consider the 44 year-old southpaw? Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe believes there's a small chance the Diamondbacks or Dodgers could be interested.  Wells' agent, Gregg Clifton, specifically mentioned the Mets, D'Backs, and Dodgers as teams the pitcher would strongly consider. However, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic indicated Friday that the D'Backs "do not appear to have interest" in Wells.  Similar story for another West team, the Mariners.  Larry Stone of the Seattle Times says the Ms "don't appear to be interested."  Stone says Wells has a strong preference to stay in the NL.  I don't blame him.  I wonder if Wells is on Atlanta's radar. var random_number = Math.random(); if (random_number
Pads to cut ties with David Wells, whose colorful career could be over (AP)

David Wells is finished with his hometown San Diego Padres, and it’s possible that the career of one of baseball’s most boisterous characters could be over. Padres To DFA David Wells
2007-08-08 21:27:00
As suspected, the Padres will designate 44 year-old starter David Wells for assignment tomorrow.  According to Ken Rosenthal, they'll then have three days to trade him. It's possible Boomer will just retire.  But back in July Wells was talking about playing in 2008.  He has an appealing contract situation that pays him $170K per additional start this year.  If you assume he wants to stay on the West Coast, the options are probably limited to the Angels, Mariners, Dodgers, Rockies, and Diamondbacks.  The D'Backs had interest last December.  And U.S.S. Mariner thinks he's better than Horacio Ramirez.  The Rockies might have a need; it was recently revealed that Jason Hirsh fractured his fibula last night (though he continued to pitch afterwards). Maybe Wells wouldn't limit himself though; it was said in January that Wells wouldn't mind playing in Toronto again.  Or how about a return to Detroit? One more point to consider, courtesy of Padr...

David Wells kills, then eats wild animals
2007-03-15 16:20:00
David Wells returned from his month long African hunting trip and basically treated the entire continent as an all you can eat buffet. "Ostrich was phenomenal. Warthog was outstanding. A little different taste, but it's really good," the Padres' pitcher said recently while recounting his November trip. "Hartebeest, wildebeest, gazelle, all that stuff. Very, very tasty."Boomer showed no sympathy in devouring a dik-dik (a furry antelope-like creature) saying, "that was probably one of the best-eating things I had. Cute little suckers, too. It's just the zebra you don't want to eat. We shot them for bait. For lions.”If Boomer can find a way satisfy his thirst for red meat, I don’t understand how there are millions of people starving over there. When Wells finally gives up baseball he should start up a show on the Discovery Channel and call it “Boomer’s Really Wild Kingdom”. Only instead of trying to save the planet, he’ll make his way around the African horn in a dune b...
David Wells Clears Waivers
2006-08-22 06:45:01
According to Metsblog.com, David Wells has cleared waivers and is eligible to be traded to any team. The Mets would most likely be interested seeing how they will be without Glavine for the year. I would highly doubt the Red Sox would be willing to trade Wells because some still think they are in contention. Kudos to those guys who think that. Unless of course Lastings Milledge is involved. Highly unlikely...
