Sci a Davos
2008-02-13 23:43:00 Ieri giornata dedicata allo sci nella località grigionese di Davos. Giunto sulle piste mi sono subito incontrato con gli sciatori Ceppi e Matteo, tra le alpi retiche per l'intera settimana.Eccoli in immagine.

2008-02-03 12:22:00 President Pervez Musharraf is reported to have had an unannounced meeting in Davos with Saman Ahsan, the daughter of Aitzaz Ahsan, the president of the Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association (PSCBA), and is believed to have told her to persuade her father to give up his opposition to his regime. Saman, 30, works with the WEF in Geneva as project manager of the Council of 100 Leaders (C100), an initiative for dialogue between Muslims and the West, and according to her mother Bushra, she was not convinced with the views Musharraf put across. According to the Dawn, the one-to-one meeting took place on the sidelines of this year’s World Economic Forum on the initiative of Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairman of the WEF, who is a friend of former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. Saman is reported to have told her friends and colleagues after the meeting that the president had asked her to convince her father “not to come in my way”. B...

The Davos Question: How can you make the world a better place in 2008?
2008-02-02 21:48:00 Every year, for the past 37 years, leaders of government, companies, as well as wealthy individuals from Europe, the Americas, and Asia come together to the resort town of Davos, Switzerland. It is called the World Economic Forum (WEF), a Geneva-based foundation whose annual meeting of top business leaders, national political leaders (presidents, prime ministers and others), and selected intellectuals and journalists meeet and try to discuss the current world economic concerns. From January 23-27, 2008, these individuals hammered on this year's Davos question: What one thing do you think that countries, companies, or individuals must do to make the world a better place in 2008? The 11 sessions of Davos were held in a bunkerlike conference center, with no view of the surrounding beautiful mountains and the conference of the world's top achievers focused on global uncertainties, both economic and political. For the first time however, participants not only included corporate executi...
The Incredible Shrinking Davos Man
2008-01-30 00:49:00 by Tony Karon Last week’s annual Davos meeting of the World Economic Forum was conspicuous by how little it seemed to matter to anyone — the event passed with hardly a nod from the mainstream media, which had more important things to worry about. But as I wrote on TIME.com, it wasn’t simply that Davos was eclipsed in the news cycle by global stock market wobbles and by Hamas in Gaza wiping the floor with its dunderheaded adversaries (dutifully gathered at Davos, in the persons of Condi Rice, Tony Blair, the Israeli government and the leaders of Fatah). On fronts as different as financial markets and the geopolitics of the Middle East, it has become plain that the political and economic elites of the West have seen a sharp decline in their ability to dictate events. The decline of Davos Man is not simply related to a credit crunch or a U.S. election year. Even if America elects a new Administration dedicated to reversing the mistakes of the Bush team, it is unlikely t...

It's still a man's world at the Davos forum
2008-01-28 12:52:00 DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Women may be smashing glass ceilings on Wall Street, but a walk down the crowded corridors of the World Economic Forum would have you fooled. Organisers say female delegates make up 17 percent of the hundreds of policymakers and business leaders that gathered in the Alpine resort of Davos this week -- less than one in five. "That's their highest ever number, but 17 percent of delegates being women is not representative at all," Cherie Booth, a prominent lawyer and wife of former UK prime minister Tony Blair, told a breakfast meeting this week. "This is not just a box that you tick." Check the lists of high-profile delegates picked to join the keenly followed panel debates on the year's hot issues -- the economy, sovereign wealth funds, financial risk -- and you will struggle to find more than a handful of women. Only Finance Minister Christine Lagarde, PepsiCo Chief Executive Indra Nooyi and television reporter Maria Barti...

We Don?t Need Money: Davos Question (See sidebar)
2008-01-27 18:40:00 It is the nature of money that promotes greed, not human nature, just as the nature of cocaine causes certain reactions in us.
Fuente: Bono gives iPod to Japanese PM for aidFotos: AP Peter Dejong y REUTERS Denis Balibouse

Speaking in his capacity as the current Chairman of ASEAN, Mr Lee stressed that ASEAN members have strong fundamentals and that the grouping is determined to make itself relevant in the new Asia. He was speaking at the ASEAN High-Level Plenary - entitled “The Emerging Asian Community: The Role of ASEAN” - at the WEF in the Swiss alpine resort. Over 2,000 of the world’s top business leaders and politicians are gathered there to attend the annual forum. sir martin blogs davos
2008-01-26 17:38:00 Interesting to see WPP's Sir Martin Sorrell getting into the blogging game thanks to the UK's Daily Telegraph. He seems upset at the lack of American clients at Davos this year. "Heavy snow and security. Travelling to Davos will be a nightmare for most. Larger number of broken ankles and hips than usual. But if you're going to break something, a Davos hospital is as good as any. Looking at the prospective attendance list, many American CEOs seem to be absent, as it's in the middle of their reporting season - and the middle of a financial crisis.Regarding the breaking news of the Fed's emergency rate cut, I must be helpful to sentiment, but increased liquidity is the key. Cutting rates won't do the job. Back to Davos, we've also got to deal with terrible weather, but it'll clear tomorrow, just like the economy, I hope."Posted by Ed Cotton

Emma Thompson @ Davos Forum replies to (My) Zennie62 Video On Racism
2008-01-26 15:15:00 Readers of The Zeitgeist may remember the video I submitted to the Davos Forum in Switerland and as part of "The Davos Question" where YouTubers were asked to make videos that responded to the question: "What one thing do you think that countries, companies or individuals must do to make the world a better place in 2008?" The process set up by YouTube at Davos allows attendees to make video responses to the questions submitted. Well, I got my video response to the Davos question in right under the time wire, but the effort was more than worth it! On Friday, January 25th award-winning actress Emma Thompson took time at Davos to make a video answering my own. Thompson said "I really loved your video...One of the greatest problems that we have is in receiving and tolerating anyone who is different from ourselves, and we have so many boundaries in the World. And I think the only way that we can melt those boundaries is in talking to each other. We need to listen to each others...
DAVOS - Brazil senses time right for WTO deal push
2008-01-26 11:59:00 By Jonathan Lynn DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - The mood seems right for a push by trading powers to try to complete long-running negotiations for a global trade deal, Brazil's foreign minister said on Friday. Celso Amorim told Reuters that the financial markets crisis made it all the more urgent to bring the Doha round to open up world trade to a successful conclusion. "I have the feeling that there is a positive mood to try and conclude and, if anything, this financial crisis should bring home the message that it is absolutely necessary to conclude," Amorim told Reuters. Trade ministers from several countries have held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos this week. They are due to gather for a lunch on Saturday with World Trade Organisation (WTO) chief Pascal Lamy at which they will discuss the chances of a breakthrough in the WTO Doha round. The talks have stalled repeatedly, largely because of differences ...

DAVOS - Corporate gloom is not universal
2008-01-26 11:59:00 By Ben Hirschler DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Central bankers and stock market investors may have headed for the bunkers this week but economic gloom is far from universal in the real world, to judge from comments by top executives in Davos. The big question on everybody's lips at the World Economic Forum is whether the U.S. economy is facing a slowdown or a full-on recession. Coca-Cola Co Chief Executive Neville Isdell is one of those betting on the latter, predicting a greater than 50 percent risk the U.S. economy will shrink this year, though the world as a whole will still see expansion. Many of his peers, however, disagree and remain surprisingly optimistic. Dow Chemical Co boss Andrew Liveris, whose customers represent a broad range of industries, sees a soft landing and a possible pick-up for the U.S. economy in the second half of 2008. "I'd still use the word 'growth' -- I might put the word 'slow' in front of it," he said. "What's going on n...

DAVOS - Wealth funds bristle at rich country wariness
2008-01-25 10:46:00 By Natsuko Waki and Clara Ferreira-Marques DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Some of the world's biggest state-run investors said on Thursday they should not be demonised by the United States or other countries after they recently came to the aid of troubled U.S. banks. Sovereign funds have replaced hedge funds and private equity as a major driver of the global market as they seek to invest huge currency reserves in Western businesses, notably in banks. On Wednesday, U.S. President George W. Bush issued an order to clarify procedures for a U.S. law strengthening national security reviews of foreign deals, at the same time saying the United States welcomed foreign investment. Sovereign fund managers at the World Economic Forum accused rich nations of labelling them as a risk with no evidence that they were threatening national security or wielding influence. "It's like the sovereign wealth funds are guilty until proven innocent," said Mohamed Al-Jasser, vice governor of...
