2008-06-10 21:57:00 AAPL was down $4s after a sell the news unveiling of the new I-Phone. I took an online survey, I really am not so interested in the I-Phone. Too many I's, it seems rather narcissistic, ya know? The DOW finished the day GREEN. The Nasdaq fairly flat. As far as the rest of the market, well the AGS racked up huge gains again - POT, AGU, BG, etc. all had monster sized gains BUT the financials once again just bit the dust in a BIG BIG BIG way! You gotta believe that the news coming is only gonna get worse and that eventually in the not too distant future the stuff holding up now is gonna get hit. If you look at oil today you see the danger in being the last one holding the bag. I'm not calling a top on Oil, it looks like $150 is a done deal at some point (I did call that not so long ago), but the volatility in the commodities market will reign supreme as long as the dollar remains weak-butted and falling into a bottomless pit! Let me walk you through this: Exxon's profit margin is 11.23%, so at $3.50/gallon Exxon gets 39 cents, this is after the US government taxed their profits; $29 billion from Exxon alone, 41% of their profits. The US government earned 27 cents per gallon off Exxon Then there is the federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon. State taxes average 28.6 cents per gallon, so in direct taxes on your gas, 47 cents goes to the government. Add in the taxes on oil companies and 74 cents goes to the US government versus 39 cents to Exxon, almost double. So who should the "windfall" profit tax be on? Sovereign Funds
2008-05-02 22:39:00 I think the bear market is intact in equities even though we have had a big rally. One thing that I am concerned about is the sovereign funds. With trillions of dollars sitting them, yes, the ones used to buy the SUVs have to be parked somewhere. 1. I doubt they will be converted to Euros, that will depress the $ further depressing the value of these sovereign funds. 2. There may be some private equity action, but I doubt these funds want that kind of action. 3. Bonds, no thanks, got them already. 4. The money has to go to equities and US equities are quite attractive to outsiders who will also get exposure to $ rebound if they invest in US equities. If this starts flowing in, shorts will lose big and DOW will hit home run. What do you guys think about this?
