2011-02-27 04:51:00 By BOB ANDELMAN Mr. Media® Radio Network (Editor's Note: John Hawkes was a guest on the show back in October 2009. He was a great guest, so why not re-run the interview now? Tomorrow night, we'll find out whether he won the 2011 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Winter's Bone. Hopefully, this will put him over the top!) John Hawkes is best known for his role as Sol Star, the co-owner of the hardware store and best friend of the sheriff on the beloved, cocksucker HBO series ?Deadwood.? Hey?I don?t write these intros, folks, they just sort of write themselves. But like most everybody who had a star turn on that amazing but short-lived drama, Hawkes has been busy ever since, including roles in the movies American Gangster and Miami Vice. He?s currently starring on a new HBO comedy series, ?Eastbound and Down.? AUDIO EXCERPT: "As a poker player I would say you've got pretty bad odds on (a 'Deadwood' movie)... I know that David Milch, the s...

Aquellos ciclos ...
Anna Gunn, "Breaking Bad" and "Deadwood" actress: Mr. Media Interview, Part
2008-02-23 02:57:00 (Return to Part 1)ANDELMAN: A year ago, having a series on AMC would not have been a likely path to success, but I?m guessing that ?Mad Men,? which won the Golden Globe for Best Drama, changed that perception. I?m just kind of wondering at what point did you get involved with this relative to ?Mad Men? coming on the air?GUNN: At the time I got involved, I knew that they had another show that they were, I believe ?Mad Men? was, yes, it must have been shooting already, but that?s all I knew. I knew a little bit about what the storyline was, and I had a few people that I knew working on it, but that?s about all I knew. So I was excited because of AMC making its foray into the dramatic series world. They are tremendously brave. They?re risk-taking with both of these shows. They?re completely different stories, they?re completely different periods, and they?ve given them such a broad range to reach out, and they?ve given them a real opportunity to explore the true core of these stories. ...

2008-02-23 02:44:00 Anna Gunn?s arrival in the city of Deadwood on the HBO series of the same name set off one of the craziest love triangles in history. Milch on Milch: Deadwood creator talks about the Iraq war, George Bush and
2008-01-14 13:41:00 Meet the real David Milch, creator and writer for the popular HBO television series Deadwood: former addict, on-again off-again bouts of insanity, former criminal, outspoken critic of American media and mainstream television drama—and one of the most successful television writers of his generation. His credits also include Hillstreet Blues, NYPD Blue and John from Cinncinati. In this rather remarkable talk given at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Milch describes the historical research underpinning the Deadwood series (???90% historical accuracy???), his critique of the avaricious capitalism that emerged in the formative years of the American Republic, his relationship with truth in the construction of fiction, why he refuses to produce or write contemporary drama (because of what he calls the ???Iraq war mini-series???), his dire concern with how television is changing how Americans think and perceive reality, why his series tend to undervalorize women and whe...

U.S. in 1887=China in 2007: It's All Deadwood To Me
2007-08-27 07:06:00 One of the things I am always saying is that most of what is going on in China today is not distinctively or inherently "Chinese." It very much reminds me of what went on in Russia after the fall of communism there and in Korea in the 1980s and (from what I hear, Japan in the 1950s). I have frequently refer to the television show Deadwood (see here and here)in discussing today's China and now, the Wall Street Journal's Informed Reader has just done a post comparing China today to the United States, circa 1887 entitled, "U.S. in 1887=China in 2007?" The post is based on a Boston Globe article written by Stephen Mihm, an assistant professor of American history at the University of Georgia. The thesis is that China business ethics today are not all that different from American business ethics in 1887 and it is part and parcel of a country's stage of development: China’s sometimes fast-and-loose business style doesn’t necessarily reflect a distinct Chinese approach to capi...
