2007-11-09 23:58:00 Cea mai nouă creaţie a regizorului Frank Oz, “Death at a Funeral” este o farsã tipicã, cu apropos, plinã de umor negru, dat de straniile coincidenţe cu mult aplomb, pe care dacã , deşi l-ai vãzut înainte, este totuşi mult prea haios. Este o comedie trãznitã, cu mult umor dat de problemele ieşite din comun ce se rãsfrâng asupra unei familii englezeşti, ce ţine în dulapuri o multime de schelete. Aşa cum sugereazã şi titlul, toatã acţiunea filmului se desfãşoarã la o înmormântare, deschizându-se cu cu sosirea rudelor şi a prietenilor, şi sfârşindu-se în momentul în care blestemata afacere se încheie. Lucrurile merg destul de rãu de la început, fiecare membru al familiei cãrându-şi singuri bagajele, pânã la acest eveniment. 2007-11-04 19:20:00 Let's face it, Frank Oz can really only do comedy (though judging by the reactions to his 'The Stepford Wives' one might have doubted even this). Consider the lethargic 'The Score', a movie starring Norton, De Niro and Brando; how could you go wrong! Yet, he did. However, who can recall 'Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels' without a smile, or even 'Bowfinger'. 'Death at a Funeral' is something of a return to form and a funny movie. Set in England and with an almost entirely British cast, the movie plays like a more upbeat 'Festen'; a dysfunctional family get together for the funeral of the patriarch and comic situations, involving drugs, blackmail and sibling rivalry, ensue. It sounds like your average sitcom, and were it not for the production values and the high powered cast, this might well be more suitable for the small screen. Signalling every comic setup well in advance, it follows the conventions of British situational humour, but is none the worse for that. ...

2007-09-05 18:13:00 I'm curious as to what the legacy of Frank Oz will be. He sure has had a strange and interesting career, as an actor, puppeteer, voice actor, director and even as a "muppet creative consultant." He's the voice of many cultural icons, from Grover to Bert to Cookie Monster to Miss Piggy and even Fozzie Bear, not to mention a little green guy from the Star Wars movies. He's directed 12 feature films (half of which have been released since 1997) and even they are a varied bunch - he started with (not surprisingly) a Jim Henson production, the Muppets meets Lord of the Rings saga The Dark Crystal. That was followed by another Muppets movie, and that with a still-puppetted Little Shop of Horrors. The next 15 years were filled overwhelmingly with comedies, until 2001's heist flick The Score (though not great, pretty good and definitely worth watching if only to see three of the best actors of the last 50 years in one movie: Brando, DeNiro and Norton).
