Debate: A Need For Freedom From Restrictions On Social Media’s Use At
2009-10-22 07:43:00
Lets face it, majority of the companies block social media sites, especially social networking sites in the offices. On the other hand, same companies want to publicize themselves / their products through the same social media. So what is the main reason for companies to avoid using their workforce as their social media publicity team and not leverage the extended networks of their employees? Let us drill down on the reasons from the perspective of employers on blocking the social media sites. As they say, “With great power comes greater responsibility” and according to most of the companies, the responsibility part is more often than not ignored 1) Procrastination – This is by far the most important reason for companies to block all the social networking websites in the offices. When people start abusing instead of using the facility, the work planning suffers and the companies are not yet willing to pay you for chatting with 10 friends at the same time. 2) Perce...

For French, U.S. Debate Is Difficult to Imagine
2009-09-23 07:26:00
MARSEILLE, France -- When Jean-Louis Aloy could no longer walk comfortably among his olive trees in the hills above Marseille, he knew the time had come. Bowing to doctor's orders, he checked in to a hospital for a long-delayed back operation.

The Walter Payton Statue Debate
2009-09-17 03:24:00
We take a moment away from the 2009 season to discuss a topic currently making the Chicago media rounds.   The Chicago Park District has announced they are against the placement of a Walter Payton statue in the area outside Soldier Field.  From the Tribune:According to a Payton family spokeswoman, park district officials explained that Soldier Field and the area surrounding it is to be preserved strictly as a memorial to war veterans. There also is concern a Payton statue outside of Soldier Field might diminish the stature of other former Bears Hall of Famers. The park district, which oversees Soldier Field and its grounds, reportedly offered to have the statue placed at any other Chicago park. While there will surely be...
Blackhawks can prove Krause right in debate with Jordan
2009-09-12 22:52:00
"Players don't win championships, organizations do." Jerry Krause, former general manager of the six-time NBA champion Chicago Bulls, should have that quote emblazoned on his tombstone.  During his Hall of Fame induction speech, Michael Jordan reminded all once again how offended he is by Krause's statement. "[Krause] said organizations win championships. I said, 'I didn't see organizations playing with the flu in Utah. I didn't see it playing with a bad ankle,'" Jordan said on Friday in Springfield, Mass.  "I think the players win the championship, and the organization has something to do with it, don't get me wrong. But don't try to put the organization above the players." The 2009-10 Chicago Blackhawks can prove Krause correct if they...
The Phuket Jet Ski Debate
2009-09-12 14:44:00
I feel something should be written here about this weeks big story in Phuket. Jet Skis. Actually, it's an ongoing saga, but this week has seen some very interesting developments. The "Jet Ski" scam is well known, yet people get caught all the time. Not just in Phuket, I have heard the same from Ko Pha Ngan, and read about similar operations in other countries. You rent a jet ski for a bit of adrenaline on the water, bring back the machine after an hour of fun, and lo! The guy who rented it to you finds some damage. I think you know the rest of the story. Now, I have no problem with jet skis if they are properly operated, insured, maintained and kept outside of safe swimming areas. I am not a "jet ski hater". A lot of tourists expect this kind of watersports activity to be available at a major beach resort like Patong Beach. BUT, caveat emptor. Most jet skis have no insurance, and you can normally see this in big letters on the machine "NO INSURANCE". Not put off by this? PT Barnum w...
UP Manila Wins The 1st Luzon Intervarsity Debate Championship

After making it to the finals of the Philippine Intercollegiate Debate Championship (PIDC) for the first time, UP Manila Debate Circle clearly had good reason to look forward to the upcoming year. Seemingly still hot from their glorious run back in April, the trio of Robert Totanes, Lee Yarcia and Carol Tan all made it ...

Can Healthcare Debate Help Revive GOP?(even with biased media)
2009-09-05 17:57:00
When a friend on Facebook offered that the anti-[Obamacare] side “short circuited the [healthcare] debate with craziness,” I responded with a rhetorical question: Did the anti-side short circuit the debate or did the media coverage of their opposition short circuit [it], given the media focus on [its] most extreme elements? It does seem many in the media ...
The Great Debate: Instant Replay in Sports

Republicans near victory on healthcare debate
2009-09-02 10:01:00
August was a particularly brutal month for President Barack Obama and most democrats, Republicans opened up an industrial sized can of political whip ass and spent the summer spraying the entire contents all over Barack Obama and healthcare reform. The single individual who managed to land a counter punch during the entire summer debate was Barney Frank, ...
The great pageant debate
2009-08-31 03:45:00
I felt the need to respond once again about this pageant controversy.  To be quite honest the topic makes me laugh, mostly because this debate could go on forever.  And to address the hair topic, that is a matter of personal preference.  The fourth runner up at Miss Illinois USA 2009 had short hair (She was Miss Teen Illinois USA 2004).  The funny and beautiful Stephanie, Miss South Carolina USA 2009, had short hair.  She advanced to the top 10 at Miss USA.  Some people like short hair and some don't.  You can advance in a pageant with short hair.    Yes, when Jen was in the pageant it was proven that it was rigged.  Therefore, it was inappropriate to take...

This Torture Debate is Complete, Um, Torture

Photo credit: J. David Ake/ AP When the CIA inspector general's 2004 report on "harsh interrogation techniques" was released this week thanks to those bleeding heart bastards at the American Civil Liberties Union using that left-wing propaganda tool, the Freedom of Information Act, I thought, "Oh, cool!" I thought, "Oh, cool!" because I guess Eli Roth isn't going to make "Hostel 3," so I wanted to see what the CIA had come up with under the guidance of the Bush administration to get a bunch of religious zealots to talk. Although the 109-page report is still largely redacted (meaning the juiciest parts are still blacked out), I wasn't disappointed. "Oh snap!" I said while reading the report. "CIA, that...

Wood or Plastic: The Great Debate
2009-08-22 14:43:00

I'm a little less rotund in person. Photo by chanchan222.Whoa. A lot of comments on the last blog entry. The current count is 37, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went up before I finish writing this. Yesterday, I posted the blog, got a couple of comments, and then left for several hours to do an interview and on-site visit. When I returned, I was overwhelmed by the comments. I can't say I was excited. A lot of the things said both pissed me off and made me sad. A lot of them enraged me, because as I stated in my first post on this subject, I have an incredible Hulk policy with my friends. Hurt one of them,...
Most Americans not ready for Health Care debate, says TV news
2009-08-14 19:31:00
Health care is complicated and boring. That's probably why the press is focusing on the rowdier town hall crowds and sensational statements by Sarah Palin instead of the plan itself. As usual, it's hard to say whether people prefer this to the real issue or the media just think they do. Whom does this benefit? It could be that the White House knows that the more people learn about the plan the more they'll dislike it so it prefers the distraction. Meanwhile, CNN has banned talk radio personalities from coming on and commenting on the issue. Talk show hosts differ in their approach, intelligence, and knowledge. I guess a blanket ban based on a stereotype is easier than examining such distinctions. I don't listen to all of talk radio, but the shows that I've listened to have done a much better job of covering the issue than television. Finally, disinformation is inevitable. Let's correct those. The bill is the thing. SHARETHIS.addEntry( { t...
Morning debate: Should we go to Hot Doug's?

important family debate topic: Coke
2009-08-11 04:59:00
Yesterday, the Kid, Hubs and I were running errands and picking on each other spending quality time together and began to discuss the following: Which sip is the best one of an icy, cold glass of Coke? Yes, we are that deep. The Hubs told the Kid it was the last one, the one that has been lingering with the ice the longest. I cannot believe he’s teasing her again, I thought to myself. Next, he’ll tell her how much fun it is to paint the fence. Then I realized he was serious. The last sip? Furrealz?? Who is this person I married?? First off, I said, don’t you mean the first sip, since that’s the one with the most rum in it? (ba-da-ching!) But, even if it is rum-free, still, it is the first sip that’s the best. Right? All bubbly and fresh, not flat and watery and tasteless. You’re with me on this, right? Copyright © 2009 Let the dog in!. This Feed is for personal non-commercial use only. College conference debate, with a twist
2009-08-09 17:00:00
Written by Jim JantzCould a team of NBA players from any one college conference defeat a team of NBA players that jumped straight from high school? Quick answer: No!The team of players that made the jump straight from H.S. to the NBA has a relatively weak bench, but the starting lineup has too much star-power, athleticism and talent to be defeated by any college-conference team. I tried to create the best available 7- or 8-man rotation from each conference, then compared each of those teams to a team made up of players that jumped straight from high school. I also tried to pick players to fill each position (when possible), rather than just picking the 5 best players from that particular conference. Here’s how the teams shape up*:ACC –Starters: Chris Paul, Shane Battier, Vince Carter, Chris Bosh, Tim DuncanBench: Chris Duhon, Corey Maggette, Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, Rasheed WallaceWith a legit PG in CP3, this team would be fun to watch. They could get up and down, or run a...

Gates arrest reignites debate on race

Gates arrest reignites debate on race It began with a routine tip about a suspected burglary, with a white cop squaring off against a black suspect. Here's how to settle the Gates debate
2009-07-24 16:08:00
This fight over Professor Gates' arrest has spun far out of control. Too many people making Blind Justicetoo many assumptions about the facts involved. Too much generalizing about who's at fault. This goes for both sides. Before this thing goes any further, the establishment of the facts is primary. To do that, we need sworn statements from the parties and witnesses and the place to do that is in a court of law.So....The police department should reinstate the charges against Gates, so that sworn statements can be taken from everyone, under penalty of perjury. That, of course, is political impossible. Gates has threatened to sue, so he should proceed so that sworn testimony can be given in the civil case....

Chicago's great food debate
2009-07-23 05:00:00
Cover story. Published Wednesday, July 22, 2009. Page 22.You say deep dish. I say thin crust. You say PBR. I say Old Style. You say soda. I say @#$!%! Nothing hits close to home--or close to the stomach--quite like a rip-snorting argument over Chicago food and how we eat it. So RedEye decided to dig in to a few great food debates. Staffers pitted deep dish pizza against thin crust, ketchup on a hot dog against no ketchup, "pop" against "soda" and Old Style against PBR in a real brew-haha. For historical context--and expert opinion--RedEye turned to Chicago food historian Bruce Kraig, who teaches at Roosevelt University and Kendall College and in April published the book "Hog Dog: A Global...
Blog Debate: Should the CTA President Get a Pass on Driving to Work?
2009-07-21 19:03:00
Yesterday on Chicago Carless, I published a video post calling out Chicago Transit Authority president Richard Rodriguez for his recent decision to continue driving to work every day to his top job at the nation's second-largest public transportation agency. He refuses to commute by CTA bus or 'L' in order to have more time with his kids in the morning. And the Windy City's top transit blog, CTA Tattler, is defending Rodriguez's decision....
Blue Dog Dems in Health Care Debate
2009-07-16 12:12:00
Everyone wants a piece of this legislation. Late last night, CNN posted a story called "Blue Dog Democrats May Block Health Care Bill." Rep. Mike Ross, D-Arkansas, (pictured above) is a leading negotiator for the Blue Dog Democrats on health care. According to the article, they are threatening to block to keep it from getting out of committee. The conservative Democrats don't believe the legislation contains sufficient reforms to control costs in the health care system and believe additional savings can be found. Their letter to leaders raised concerns about new mandates on small businesses. Blue Dogs also say the bill fails to fix the inequities in the current system for health care costs for rural doctors and hospitals. And, the beat goes on. Let's see what today's news cycle has to offer. I'm curious to see the responses to the statements yesterday, and to see who is not happy today with either the house or senate proposal, or both....
Red-light cameras debate spills into Twitterverse
2009-07-12 06:14:00
What’s the true purpose of red-light cameras - for safety or to make money? That’s the question raised by a Chicago Tribune article today, which focuses on one camera in one suburb - Bellwood - which rakes in $60,000 to $70,000 each month from red-light camera fines. The debate quickly reached Twitter, as it so often does with controversial issues. Here’s what Chicago Twitterers had to say:...
French debate Sunday shopping

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/7gOX2)Parliament- in France has begun debating a law that would allow more shops to open on Sundays. Most retailers have been banned from trading on Sunday since 1906, when a law enshrined it as a day of rest. But President Nicolas Sarkozy says the pace of modern life has overtaken tradition, and France has ended up behind the times.Trade unions and many members of parliament across the political divide have criticised the planned law.The bill would see the establishment of special tourist areas and commercial zones.Employees would get double their normal pay for working on a Sunday.[ad#Adsense Rectangle Large]

Guideline for Gay Marriage Debate

UPDATE from Bruce:  Conservative Brawler has a related perspective on this topic.  When looking at the gay marriage issue, one has to ponder… what is this really all about? 2009-05-17 19:17:00
ASCD’s Dina Strasser, in her blog, The Line, also available at: http://ascd.typepad.com/blog, tackles the homework question by referring to Robert Marzano.Based on Marzano’s work, Art & Science of Teaching, Strasser indicates that,“It is essential for students to not merely be exposed to new knowledge, but actively and authentically work with the knowledge… When teaching procedural skills (how to accomplish something step by step), you also need to allow students to practice those skills. This practice should be frequent and simple at first, giving way to more complex activities. Importantly, students should reflect consistently on their own use of the procedures and come to an understanding that works for them individually: changing, adding, or deleting steps as necessary. When teaching declarative knowledge (concepts or ideas), you need to create activities that allow students to review and revise. By making active corrections, connections, and reflections, students in...

A picture is worth a thousand words and this picture shows both discussions in details with #47 gas man chased after his driver's loose wheel, some empty seats on the front straightaway during the Cup race and Clint Bowyer in the #33 BB&T Chevrolet racing at full speed, wow what a picture. (Photo Credit: NASCAR.com via Yahoo! Sports)The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway this past weekend debate lives on with two key discussions.1) Marcos Ambrose’s crew member did what during Sunday’s Cup Series race? In case you didn’t see what happened, here’s the NASCAR.com video, basically, on lap 67 during a round of green flag pit stops, the #47 car made a normal pit stop, during the stop, a tire got away, so the gas man of the #47-Marcos Ambrose’s team, chased the loose tire which was halfway to the flag stand on front straightway by the time he caught it and rolled it back, because he went out to get the tire during green conditions, NASCAR called for a ca...
I win a debate every 40 years or so, it seems.

When we were in Florida, we rented a minivan to take us around, and while I've never been a minivan kind of guy, I have to say that I liked it a lot.For one thing, it actually fit everybody into it, and did so easily. Our usual SUV at home has no sliding doors and the seats don't go down too far and they don't have any room between or around them, so with the Babies! seats in the middle, it's hard to get into the farthest back row, making it comical/stupid for our whole family to go anywhere. But the minivan we had in Florida, a Ford one, had a sliding door on the passenger's side, and the middle row of seats was set to the left, so it was possible to get in and move to the farthest back even with two car seats set up in the middle row, and the back seat was wide enough that Middle and The Boy didn't fight (much). What really surprised me, though, was that the minivan didn't feel like I was driving a minivan. When I drive our SUV, I feel like I'm running a semi-rig. It's a...

The White and Whole Wheat Bread Debate
2009-02-13 19:51:00
There has always been debate on whether white bread or whole wheat bread is better for your health. Here are some facts to help you draw your own conclusions.Traditional whole wheat bread is made with fresh stone ground flour, water, salt and yeast. Nothing else is required, and the taste and texture of these breads is excellent. The stone ground flour contains all the components of the wheat grain - endosperm, fiber husk and wheatgerm - so the bread is jam-packed full of complex carbohydrates, natural vitamins and minerals, phytonutrients, and is free of trans fat and saturated fat.White bread is made from flour which has been stripped of it's fiber and nutrients, then bleached. Industrial bread, the kind you buy at the supermarket, can contain any of the approximately 60 approved chemicals used in the industrial making of flour and bread. These chemicals help to make bread that looks bone white, has an extended shelf life, and entrains an abnormal amount of air in the bread - mak...
Lord Ahmed's attempts to silence debate on the true nature of Islam fail
2009-02-07 06:58:00
CCFOC published: 4th February 2009, 'Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch Parliament since 1998 and the founder of the Party for Freedom, has been re-invited to screen his latest film, Fitna, in the House of Lords later this month after the original event was cancelled in the face of threats by Lord Ahmed to mobilise Muslims to stop Mr Wilders entering Parliament. Fitna is a short film made by Mr Wilders in 2008 that explores the Koran?s position on terrorism, Islamic universalism, and Islam in the Netherlands and Europe. The film?s title comes from the Arabic word ?fitna? which is used to describe ?disagreement and division among people?, or a ?test of faith in times of trial?. Mr Wilders was initially invited to screen his film Fitna in the House of Lords on 29th January 2009. However, various representatives of the British Muslim community objected to this invitation. Lord Ahmed, was created a life peer in 1998 by the Labour Government and was the first Muslim peer. He threatene...
