Media Expectations Won?t Matter Much to Most Voters Watching Debates
2008-09-26 21:48:00
Oftentimes when we who write about politics talk about the debates, we evaluate how well a candidate has done based upon our expectations of his performance. To that end, campaigns tend to talk down their candidates debating skills while praising their opponent as well-versed in this arena.  This way, after the encounter, they can note how ...

Scripture and the Pope: Part 5

Here is Part 5 in my debate with Amy on papal infallibility as it is found in Scripture. Also see Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -I apologize ahead of time that most my comments are not backed with Scripture at this point. I have made most of those already in previous posts. While I put little stock in my own opinions as compared to the authority of Scripture, I am responding to the best of my ability from a biblical worldview rather than by book, chapter and verse. I have prayed extensively about this, as I consider truth claims no light matter that can be made without great accountability. (To whom much has been given, much is required.)I do think that the lack of Scriptural support is a deficiency in your argumentation. I mean no offense in this at all, but many of your arguments seem to come from your own ideas of what you would like a verse to mean instead of what the context, the original languages, other Scripture passages, and biblical schola...

Scripture and the Pope: Part 4
2008-05-15 19:48:00
Here is Part 4 in my debate with Amy on papal infallibility as it is found in Scripture. Also see Parts 1, 2, and 3.Pax Christi,phatcatholic- - - - - - - - - -Somewhere between ?Pope? and utter nonsense, is my view of name changes in the Bible. Jesus does not deliver the name change at this point, only makes reference to it. As if he said, ?Peter, just like your name means Rock, upon the Rock of what you just said (You are the Son of God) I will build my kingdom.? Kind of like, ?Amy (cute girl in the profile pic), Just like your name means beloved, so this smart, Phatcatholic guy loves you.?I disagree with you here and I think I can prove why, but I also don't think it's necessary. We may be going on a tangent in debating what or who "this rock" is. My understanding is that the identity of the rock confirms Peter's primacy among the apostles and the unique leadership position that Jesus gave to Peter. But, we're not debating that. Instead, we are debating whether or not Peter (a...
Farcical techno-debates over 'professional quality'
2008-05-15 16:00:00
The are times when the cinema and broadcast industries are truly absurd; when the people who work within these fields, and the institutions they work within, display attitudes and perspectives that are truly obnoxious. The great and never ending debate that draws us all in with remarkable regularity is that over Quality, Image Fidelity, what is and is not acceptable, what is and is not viable for professional production. This debate masquerades as being technical, of being concerned with scientific and mathematical detail, but in truth it is almost never anything to do with technology. The ever running quality debate that manifests as 420 vs 422, intra vs longGOP, film vs digital is nothing more than a thin veneer over a debate that is really cultural and psychological. The debate that positions some cinema technologies as unworthy and others as superior is actually about those individuals and institutions expounding these distinctions to justify their own choices, their own decision...

My reply is very incomplete. Thank you, in advance, for putting up with the length of this. The length doesn't bother me at all. I try to be as concise as possible, but sometimes you just have to write a lot in order to defend a position, and I'm okay with that. Some of your post matches up with what I have learned my entire life in studying the Bible. Some things you have written, I hold as truth, the first of them being that,?All things pale in comparison to Jesus.?Second, I also agree with your view that people?s names hold great importance.Good to know.Thirdly, your point on keys and authority pointing back to the Davidic kingdom ("Among these was a ...

Scripture and the Pope: Part 1

What follows is Part 1 in what I think will be a very fruitful dialogue with Amy, who owns a blog called "The Way I Say." I happened upon her blog because I was looking for a poem about redemption for a presentation on that topic and she just happened to have exactly what I needed. Since then she has made some very helpful comments on my blog and I look forward to our dialogue together. That said, here is her first post to me:First of all, do you like switchfoot, because that is a most important matter to clear up?Do you give as much authority to the Pope's words as you do to scripture?I definitely like Switchfoot! I hope that's ok :DAs for your second question, I don't want to give a simple "Yes" or "No" answer because I'm afraid it might imply things I don't intend. I will say that, when the pope speaks as the Successor of St. Peter, in his role of feeding and tending God's people, on a matter of faith and morals that is to be binding on the whole Church, then his words requi...

Indonesia Debates Ban On Islamic Sect
2008-04-21 13:51:00
The nation of Indonesia continues debating its future as a secular or an an Islamic state. The present government regards itself as secular with strong ties to the Muslim religion. However, the emergence of an Islamic sect named Ahmadiyah has raised new issues for the nation since the leader of this sect claims to be another prophet who holds equal status with that of Muhammad. Thousands of protestors from groups such as the Defenders Front and Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia protested in the streets of Jakarta demanding that Ahmadiyah be disbanded for its heretical views on religion. Some protestors shouted “Ahmadinyah members have violated our human rights by disturbing our practice of Islam. They are tryng to posion our minds with this new prophet nonsense.” The Indonesian government has announced it is preparing to declare the sect an outlaw group for failure to change its views on religion. There are about 200,000 Ahmadiyah followers in a nation of over 120 million but, fo...
In Praise of Bad Debates
2008-04-20 15:27:00
I guess I'm a little late to the table on this, but I didn't actually see the ABC Democratic presidential debate the other night. I saw plenty of snippets and highlights, so I have a pretty good idea what transpired, but I had other plans which were, I think it's fair to say, infinitely more attractive than watching Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama lock horns for the 237th time.Anyway, Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos have been pilloried ever since for the gotcha quality of the questions they asked the two Democratic contenders. One after another, the veteran newsreader and his diminutive sidekick inquired about each of the mini-controversies that have recently plagued the campaign. Obama seemed to get the worst of it, which greatly offended his blogosphere cheerleaders, but he's the frontrunner now, and that's the way these things go. Though Clinton did respond to pointed questions about her honesty, Obama had to fend off queries about his supposed elitism, his rel...

Compassion Forum A Stark Opposite To Republican Debates
2008-04-14 22:27:00
Last night, Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama participated in a Compassion Forum on CNN, which wasn't so much a presidential debate as it was a separate interview with each candidate, filled with slow, carefully-chosen, politically-correct phrases and many references to God, faith, love, grace, and mysteries. Essentially, both candidates said the same types of things. They don't know if God wants either of them to be President of the United States. They are people of great faith. They respect other's faiths. The calm setting was a far cry from the nail-biting, selectively-enforced response times allotted to the Republican presidential candidates in their debates. The last GOP debate - excluding the February 2nd New York MySpace forum in which only two of the Republicans (Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee) participated - was on January 30th, 2008 in Simi Valley, California, hosted by CNN at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

No Debates for CBS News and Katie Couric?
2008-03-05 15:31:00
?It wasn?t a financial decision. It?s a programming decision and finding an appropriate time to put it in prime time. It does cost a fair amount of money in preemption costs to put them in prime time. But that wasn?t the primary reason it didn?t happen.?-- Sean McManus, president of CBS News, trying -- unsuccessfully -- to explain why TV's highest paid news anchor, Katie Couric, did not host a single one of the 348 televised presidential debates. He was interviewed by The New York Observer's Felix Gillette for the story "Why No Debate for CBS Star Katie?" What's even worse? Nobody noticed Couric was MIA until this week.Tough week for CBS News anchors past and present, as it was also revealed that former "48 Hours" original anchor Dan Rather was excluded from the celebration of that show's 20th anniversary. He was apparently too busy hosting "The Search for Geraldo Rivera" on HDNet. Oh, and Edward R. Murrow is still dead. (Thanks to MediaBistro.com for the tip!) Amazon.com Widgets
