The day the world turned back to decency
2008-11-05 11:18:00 The triumph is an American triumph but the consequences affect every man, woman and child on the planet. The celebrations will be first and foremost American celebrations, but the gratitude of all of us extends to every American citizen who had the courage to be different. For you in your wisdom and your nerve have ...

Memo to Networks: Show a Little Decency in Your Reporting of Hillary's Days
2008-03-21 23:03:00 Amidst all the political excitement in the past few days - further reaction to Obama's important speech about racism in America, McCain's gaffe's about al-Qaeda in Iran, people in the State Department illegally looking at the passports of leading Presidential candidates - I wanted to briefly note, and decry, the shabby way the three 24/7 cable news operations reported Hillary Clinton's release of details of her daily activity as First Lady.CNN, MSNBC, and Fox all couldn't help mentioning what Hillary reported she was doing when Bill was with Monica in the White House. What interest, other than cheap and prurient, does reporting on that serve?Telling Americans that Hillary did more or less about this and that in her years as First Lady makes perfect sense. Reporting that many of her notes of meetings were vague or general is fine and fair game. But reporting on what a wife was doing when her husband's philandering is not - even if the wife happens to be a First Lady who is now r...

Line of decency blurred for pro athletes
2007-11-15 03:05:00 Take one step off the edge of a cliff, you know you've gone too far.But in the world of professional hockey, knowing when to bite your tongue isn't so cut and dried.Just ask the Sean Averys of the world.Avery frequently takes a flying leap off the cliff, never mind a single step. And there's no sign of him stopping anytime soon. How far is too far? That's another debate started by Avery but this one doesn't require censorship.I think it depends on the sport and the league.Whatever Avery said to Darcy Tucker and Jason Blake that got them all riled up might not have provoked the same reaction in another sport. The ears of NBA and NFL players have undoubtedly been assaulted by much worse than anything Avery could muster. And that was on the playground. As 10-year-olds.I'm pretty sure the n-word has been dropped a few times in either of those leagues. Course, if Avery played that card before throwing down with Georges Laraque, his life might be in jeopardy.Hockey players are tough g...

Columbia University: Lack of Decency and Integrity
2007-09-30 08:00:00 by Mahmoud El-Yousseph Columbia University President Lee Bollinger lacked decency and integrity during his introduction of Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Mr. Bollinger's remarks were rude and insulting. The speech at Columbia University was an important podium for Iran's president to express his country's views. This is what was suppose to be a vehicle for dialog between Iran and the U.S. Mr. Bollinger's unexpected introductory remarks turned into a belligerent speech, continuing ad nauseum. Directed at a world leader in front of the whole world to see, it was an ambush intended to humiliate the guest speaker, further inflaming tensions between our two nations. I am not a big fan of Ahmadinejad but I don't care what anyone thinks of his politics or his personality, a guest--someone invited by Bollinger himself--should not be treated in such a manner. It showcased a lack of hospitality and immaturity that was very disappointing for what is supposed t...
News & Current Events :: House Bill Would Nullify Broadcast Decency Ruling
2007-09-25 12:16:00 Author: Eric Subject: House Bill Would Nullify Broadcast Decency RulingPosted: Tue Sep 25, 2007 6:16 am (GMT -4) House Bill Would Nullify Controversial Broadcast Decency Ruling Jim Brown The Parents Television Council is backing a House bill aimed at restoring the FCC's ability to prohibit profanity and indecency on television during children's viewing hours. Congressman Chip Pickering (R-Mississippi) introduced the bill in response to a Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that bars the Federal Communications Commission from imposing fines on broadcast networks that air so-called "fleeting" instances of profanity on the public airwaves before 10:00 p.m. His measure -- known as the Protecting Children from Indecent Programming Act (HR 3559) -- "requires the FCC to maintain a policy that a single word or image may be considered indecent, in enforcing its regulations concerning the broadcast of indecent programming over the public airwaves." In...
Rendered Speechless by the Far Left?s Lack of Decency

News & Current Events :: Broadcast Decency Bill to Get Vote in Senate
2007-07-19 15:17:00 Author: Eric Subject: Broadcast Decency Bill to Get Vote in SenatePosted: Thu Jul 19, 2007 9:17 am (GMT -4) Broadcast Decency Bill to Get Vote in Senate Jim Brown The Senate Commerce Committee is scheduled to hold an important vote today on a broadcast decency bill that seeks to nullify a controversial federal appeals court ruling. In June, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a ruling that bars the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from fining broadcasters that air so-called "fleeting" profanities on the public airwaves during times children are most likely to be in the audience. A bill sponsored by Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-West Virginia) would nullify that ruling by reinstating the FCC's ability to prohibit instances of profanity or indecency during children's viewing hours. The measure is scheduled for a vote in the Senate Commerce Committee today. Dan Isett, director of corporate and government affairs at the Parents Television Council, ...

Communications Decency Act Comes To The Rescue Of Employers
2006-12-16 22:34:02 As an employer, are you liable for your employee's threatening emails to others? The short answer is no, but it took the Sixth Appellate District some 34 pages to say it. And with good reason - there's an interesting story there. Michelangelo Delfino and Mary Day got into a dispute with their former employer, Varian Medical Systems, and allegedly posted some 28,000 comments on the Internet about Varian, which the company believed amounted to defamation and harassment. One of Varian's supporters, Cameron Moore, also got into the mud-slinging with Delfino and Day. Varian had earlier obtained a judgment of some $775,000 against Delfino and Day, but that verdict was overturned by the California Supreme Court under a SLAPP theory.Delfino and Day apparently got involved with Moore along the same lines as their campaign against Varian, and Moore's comments in return physically threatened Delfino and Day with bodily harm and death. Th...
Decency, please
2006-10-13 20:03:03 Praying at the Western Wall is a special event for the Jews, particularly on the 9th of Av. Today, we fast and commemorate the destroyed Temple. That solemn mood is confronted with the cheering and screaming crowds of tourists near the Wall. They pose on the background of the remains of our Holy Temple, and laugh, and make photos. The inside of the Vatican is off-limits to tourists, and non-Muslims are banned from Mecca and even from the famous mosques. Jesus admonished not to show your pearls to pigs (Talmud, more politely, speaks of the onion sellers in a similar proverb), but Israeli rulers, eager to expunge Jewish religion from the society, show off the most sacred remains. Jerusalem, like a prostitute, opened herself for everyone to see, and the foreigners flock to look at her nakedness. The Dome of the Rock hangs above the Wall, a constant humiliating reminder of the past Muslim triumph over Judaism, but also of moral bankruptcy of the Jewish state. No other country would t...
