Bank of England's Interest Rate Decisions
2009-09-15 08:12:00
The Bank of England have responsibility for setting interest rates. There is a brief overview of how they set interest rates here.Since the Bank of England was made independent, in theory, there is greater transparency with the Bank of England publishing the minutes of minutes into deciding interest rates. But, behind the closed doors, recent revelations suggest it is not just a polite gentleman's club. According to David Blanchflower, a former member of the MPC, a divisive battle was played out before the Bank's dramatic decision to cut interest rates by 1.5% in November. (see: New Statesman)David Blanchflower was critical of the Banks model of deciding interest rates and predicting the state of the economy. He argues the Bank relied too much on theoretical models which came to place an unwarranted emphasis on the risks of inflation and underestimated the growing evidence of recession and financial crisis."I focused on the empirical data suggesting Britain was heading for recessio...
Decision Making On Money, Love, Work & Health: Why Decisions Errors Are Mad
2009-08-31 14:15:00
Decision making is something that happens throughout our day but with different degrees of importance, urgency and consequential outcomes. Your life at this very moment is the result of every decision you have made along the way. There is no doubt how easy life will turn out to be, if we can make good decisions quickly and easily. But we both know that in reality decision making is not that clear cut! Everyone makes wrong decisions sometimes or bad ones for that. I am sure you can recall moments where you said to yourself, ?I wish I didn't make THAT decision?. How many times have you heard stories about smart people making stupid decisions with their money? This happens all too often and baffles everyone. Have you ever wondered why intelligent, sensible people make such mistakes and rash decisions? Guidelines, strategies that tell us how to make a decision. Sadly, it doesn?t always produce a correct answer. However, sometimes they are the reasons why people make the wrong decision...
Decisions for the Cookbook
2009-06-23 00:16:00
It’s funny how every day I think about what it is I’m going to work on for my cookbook. Do I make up a new recipe and give it a shot? Do I try a new revision of a previous recipe that dawned on me when I gave it it’s first test run? Or do I just screw it all and eat out instead? (Anything but Italian…) Mmmm… starch. And of course I have to choose between working on antipasto dishes versus pasta dishes versus polenta and so forth. I have to keep all the chapters afloat like an expert plate-spinner if only so I don’t get too tired of one type of Italian food. (No matter what I choose though, my starch intake remains firmly through the roof…) There is the other decision that has to be made whenever I try a new recipe. Does this recipe have potential, and thus just needs a tweaking or slight revision, or is it so far off the mark that is has to be scrapped? As luck would have it, I’ve only had one recipe so far that I felt n...

Sotomayor's decisions are "based more on the merits and facts of the cases"
2009-05-27 15:53:00
Legal experts cited by Reuters in a piece by Steve Holland say Judge Sonia Sotomayor doesn't appear to be either particularly liberal or conservative on business issues, with decisions based more on the merits and facts of the cases than an ideological approach to the law.Replacing a liberal justice with one who decides cases on their merits rather than politics doesn't mean the GOP will just give her a pass, they have to at least appear adversarial for the sake of their base - but despite predictable wailing and knee-jerk gnashing of rhetorical teeth from the usual extreme right info-tainers pandering for ratings, the folks in DC expect Ms. Sotomayor to be confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice.A comment from 2005 may prove sticky if quoted out of context, but this is no activist ideologue. Judge Richard C. Wesley, a George W. Bush appointee to the Second Circuit, said:"Sonia is an outstanding colleague with a keen legal mind. She brings a wealth of knowledge and hard work to all h...

AIG-"Making Informed Decisions Is More Important Than Ever"-NAIC Chief, PA
2009-03-22 20:02:00
In the face of continuing media and consumer confusion regarding American International Group, Inc. (AIG) and the role of state insurance regulators, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has moved to correct the misinformation and in a published statement urges caution and a close examination of the facts. The following news release was published by the NAIC on  March 19, 2009 (underlines for emphasis) “In uncertain times, making correctly informed financial decisions is more important than ever,” said NAIC Chief Executive Therese M. (Terri) Vaughan, Ph.D. “This is especially true for AIG’s policyholders, where unsubstantiated information and misstatements in the media have led to unnecessary consumer frustration and fear.” First and foremost, AIG is typically described as the world’s largest insurance company. In fact, it is a global financial services conglomerate that does business in 130 countries. AIG owns 176 other compani...

Broadband factors into real estate decisions
2008-11-13 02:37:00
Source: SFGate.comBy Peter SvenssonAdam and Anita Paulk had a nice home outside Temple, Texas, with a big yard and a 10-minute commute to his job. But in Internet terms, the house was on Slow Lane. There was no high-speed Internet connection available. So the Paulks pulled up stakes in 2005 and built a home in a new subdivision. It was a little farther from his job, but at least it could get broadband."It was worth it," Anita Paulk said, not to hear her husband gripe about the connection anymore. In less than a decade, broadband has gone from a luxury to a must for many people, and for some of them, it has started to influence their real estate decisions. Homes that have broadband are winning out over more-remote ones that don't. Areas with better and faster broadband are becoming more desirable than ones with slower access.Edward Redpath, a real estate broker in Hanover, N.H., said he has seen deals fall through once the buyer realizes a home doesn't get broadband. Making their right to advertising decisions
2008-10-31 05:03:00
No business can survive the long run without some form of consistent advertising. As a result, most business owners will eventually consider using advertising to promote their business. The toughest part of the advertising equation is in determining where and how to spend your advertising dollars. If you do it wrong, you could plunk down your entire advertising budget and receive absolutely no return on your investment. But, if you do it right, your advertising could continue to bring a nice return for years to come. HOW DO I MAKE THE RIGHT ADVERTISING DECISIONS In order to make good decisions concerning how to spend your advertising budget, you must first have a good understanding of the different types of advertising and promotion available and what can be expected to be achieved by each. -You must understand which markets the different media's can reach. -You must understand the demographics of the media's consumers. -You must understand the buying habits of the consumers re...
How to make decisions (not for the serious folks)
2008-09-11 10:36:00
Question: How can a company ensure that there is a healthy level of disagreement when making a decision?Answer: The ancient Persians used to make decisions twice?first when they were drunk, then when they were sober. Only if they agreed in both circumstances would they act on the decision. The process worked. The Persians ruled much of world for three centuries. We think companies need to imitate the Persians. As you might imagine, we get a chuckle any time we say this to an audience. People want to retire to the bar to continue the discussion. What people miss is that most corporations make major decisions in a state that, while not drunk, is certainly emotional. Companies don?t need to have executives pop a few martinis and reconsider their thinking. Executives need to find a thoroughly sober, dispassionate environment in which to give their emotional decisions a second look. Informed Insurance Decisions
2008-07-28 08:09:00
Insurance is important to the fabrics of society and economy. And one does not have to be an economist to know this. Insurance is something people buy hoping they never have to use. They purchase insurance to guards against unexpected and unaffordable losses. Where the purchasers really win is in the peace of mind the insurance policy buys them. If the worst should happen, insurance works to provide financial recovery. This knowledge has increased the demand for insurance services in the last couple of decades.Have a look at insurance1.com - your source for online insurance quotes. They cover a wide range of insurance products (Insurance Quotes, Health Insurance, Car Insurance, Life Insurance, Home Insurance) and offer not only great quotes, but also a wealth of information for users that will enable anyone to make informed insurance decisions. MIT Creating a Car that Helps Drivers Make Decisions
2008-06-03 21:57:00
Called an "Aware Car," this new technology would include mini cameras and infrared lights mounted above the steering wheel which monitor the driver's eye and eyelid movements, wires stored in the console which would monitor the driver's heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration and a device in the trunk which would monitor lane drifting. Real-time data pops up on a backseat computer monitor, all of it stored on a hard drive in the trunk. I think such technology would be a fantastically beneficial one which would serve to save lives, especially as a human being ages and their response time becomes impaired. Now let's see this plus additional safety measures such as the ones racing car drivers presently have on THEIR cars, not only on SUV's, but on ALL types of vehicles as there are too many people dying in driving accidents. Forced Decisions
2008-05-25 19:01:00
In life, we all face number of situation when we are forced to take certain decisions which we never otherwise thing of taking. I put these decisions under the category of forced decisions because these decisions are mostly opposite of our basic nature. For example, if we do not like to hurt anyone in this world then sometimes due to the adamant or irritating attitude of few people we are forced to take decisions which can hurt these people. However, we cannot blame directly ourselves for these decisions because other people some time constantly make number of efforts to hurt us or our feelings. Now if these people do not take care of our feeling then for how long we also can respect their feelings. Similarly, this finding also becomes relevant for us and we need to see reason hidden behind the bad behaviour of certain person towards us.Therefore, we are also required to remain alert of our own actions and avoid hurting the sentiments or emotions of others. If in this world, every pe...

Recent decisions show Yanks thinking 2009 and not 2008
2008-05-23 14:39:00
First things first: I believe the New York Yankees when they say the timing of the Joba Chamberlain decision was simply a matter of sticking to the plan laid out last winter, and not a reaction to their poor play this season. Though it's obvious the failures of Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy made it easier to pull the trigger, Joba was in the bullpen this season only to limit his innings, and by going into the starting rotation in mid-June he should finish the season around the target number of 150. Still, I don't think there's any doubt that making Chamberlain a starter right now is a move that says this organization is thinking about 2009 and beyond more than it is about 2008 wrote New York Daily News baseball writer John Harper. Not that GM Brian Cashman is conceding an end to the Yankees' run of 13 straight playoff seasons. But I think he has been willing all along to sacrifice this season, if necessary, to build what he believes will be a championship foundation around his youn...

Who makes the Tough Money Decisions ?
2008-05-14 15:23:00
The people, who make decisions in accounting, make it based on three categories. First, people who manage a business, second, the external people of a business who have a direct financial interest to a business, and third the people and organizations that have an indirect effect on a business. This applies to non profit organizations as well. Management refers to the group of people who are in charge for operating a business and for measuring up to the profitability and liquidity goals. If a business is extremely large, then the management will most often require more than one person, and the people are hired to perform their job. Managers need to answer important questions such as what was the company’s net income, and if they have a substantial rate of return. Does the company have enough assets, and which products bring in the most money? When making a decision, managers usually follow a systematic approach. Even though larger businesses require a more concrete analysis, ...
Respecting our decisions
2008-05-09 16:02:00
It is very important for any person to respect his decisions and go with it even if whole world turns against it because it is your own decision and you only know the value of your decision. We can easily find many people in this world who leave their decisions in between when they see increasing opposition against their decision. While there are few who remain with their decisions and turn them right despite opposition by others. Success of any decision in this world only depends on the person himself and how much he is ready to do for his decision. Decisions do not fail because they are wrong however they fail due to people who fail in making them true.It is very important to think about any decision properly before taking it; however, people need not to doubt it after once it is taken. Simultaneously, any decision can be turned right if person taking decision has the will power to make it right. In nutshell, it is very important for person taking decisions to respect his own decisi...

Journal to help made decisions
2008-04-27 04:29:00
When confronted with a decision, there is clearly no better way to consider our options, determine the potential, or contemplate our feelings than writing it down. Keeping a journal is as simple as this nursery rhyme; we need no more than a pen and paper to chronicle our life journey according to Kim Ades, MBA, president of Opening Doors and Frame of Mind Coaching The words that we write in our journals have the power to transform our lives; from confronting our battles, personal demons and deep dark secrets to exploring and exposing our fantasies, dreams, hopes and aspirations. Writing allows us to envision the kinds of miracles and joys we'd love to see come into our world. It allows us to reframe our life experiences by giving us a forum in which to express and redirect our thoughts. When we write, we engage in a very different process-one that is experiential. When we write down our thoughts, feelings, or desires, we allow them to come to life....

Brain Scanners Can See Your Decisions Before You Make Them
2008-04-14 14:34:00
You may think you decided to read this story -- but in fact, your brain made the decision long before you knew about it. In a study published Sunday in Nature Neuroscience, researchers using brain scanners could predict people's decisions seven seconds before the test subjects were even aware of making them. The decision studied -- whether to hit a button with one's left or right hand -- may not be representative of complicated choices that are more integrally tied to our sense of self-direction. Regardless, the findings raise profound questions about the nature of self and autonomy: How free is our will? Is conscious choice just an illusion? "Your decisions are strongly prepared by brain activity. By the time consciousness kicks in, most of the work has already been done," said study co-author John-Dylan Haynes, a Max Planck Institute neuroscientist. Haynes updated a classic experiment by the late Benjamin Libet, who showed that a brain region involved in coordinating m...
