Police informant crucified in Thailand?s Deep South
2008-04-27 18:33:00 This is based on a very sketchy translation of tomorrow?s edition of Bangkok?s Daily News newspaper. On April 26, suspected insurgents in Yala shot dead a 22-year-old informant and nailed his body to the middle of the road. The informant, who had been shot in the back of the neck with a 9mm pistol, was dragged ...
South By Deep South
2008-04-22 17:53:00 Those of you who have been wanting a Technology conference to visit the South Eastern United States are now in luck. The event is called South By Deep South and is a take on the familiar South by South West conference. The event will be held in Birmingham, Alabama on September 26th-28th. The final details of the event are still being worked out but Ike Pigott has already let us know some of what we can expect from this event: Social Media/PR/Marketing Web development A full-blown WordCamp In case you missed it, that last one says WordCamp. Personally, I thought Atlanta, Georgia would of been the first city in the South Eastern United States to get a WordCamp event, but it looks like I was wrong. Ike also notes that there will be a SideWalk Festival that will be taking place during the same weekend. I’m really glad to see these WordCamp events making there way east rather than being confined to silicon valley. As a matter of fact, WordCamps are starting to crop up everywhere,...

2008 Election: Presidential General Election
2007-12-31 23:43:00 PART III: My 2008 Presidential General Election Prediction (from this site: http://uselectionatlas.org/PRED-/PRESIDENT/2008/pred.php?action-=indpred&id=1919) (note that the colors are opposite of what the media uses): Edwards/??? (252), Romney/Huckabee (286). At this point, I have a VERY close race in mind. In fact, it’s the exact same amount of EVs as 2004. If Edwards can win North Carolina, it’s by a ...
Churchill's Pub & Restaurant : A Touch of Britain in the Deep South
2007-12-30 17:51:00 I've been to Churchill's Pub twice and each time was a different experience. The first time my husband and I went alone. We were seated in a cosy room with a fireplace and dark wooden tables and booths. This room was called the study. We both commented on how we actually felt as if we were in a pub in England. We were told, then, that all the furniture was actually imported from England. The food was delicious and the drinks were cheap, as we were there during Happy Hour. I was just in Savannah last week with my family and for dinner, I suggested that we return to Churchill's. This time, we sat in the parlour, which was an open room with large tables near the window, looking out onto busy Bay Street. The food once again, was spot on. I had a delectable blackened steak which was a touch spicy and cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes and sauteed vegetables tasted like Heaven. My brother ordered the Roasted Salmon. He said it was the best Salmon he'd ever had. My ...

I'm back in the Deep South...
2007-12-23 02:57:00 I spent the past week in upstate New York visiting my friend Youngmee and her family. It was a very laid back and totally awesome trip... we ate tons of Korean food (kimchi for breakfast, anyone?), went to a Korean Chinese restaurant (jiajianmyun!), took a belly dancing lesson (oh, how obvious it was that I hadn't done that since June 2006), ate really chocolatey stuff all the time, baked a pecan pie, watched Cheburashka, Vinni Pookh, and The Italian, AND she and her mom have gotten me hooked on Jumong, the most addictive TV show since Battlestar Galactica. Awesomeness. It barely got above freezing once while I was there...Look! Moosh and I are in non-Russian snow! Can you find the Konglish? Are the shrimp frightened?Youngmee baked a totally delicious pie.I contributed the south GA pecans and my eating skills.
The Deep South?s Oldest Rivalry
2007-11-09 00:00:00 I imagine that every good Georgia Bulldog fan has seen this photo of Uga V trying to take a chunk out of Auburn WR Robert Baker's midriff thousands of times. That's just one (of the best) moments in this Southern college football rivalry that started in 1892. These two teams ...
A Return to the Deep South of Louisiana
2007-09-28 16:11:00 Paddling up the Bayou, one eye at the back of the head searching for any hyped-up alligators on the prowl, we headed inland and to the place were the Klu Klux sit around openly in cafe's drinking tea!Not quite ......... I am though heading back in the general direction of America, to New Orleans on the banks of the Mississipi This prospective trip has dredged-up some past memories when I used to work with an American Company in Asia called Tidewater Marine during the late 1990's.One American in particular produced for me an image of his home town in Louisiana on more than one occassion. He was a Captain, an overly large one who used to drive the boat nearly naked as he sweated through his extremely vocal arm-waiving (whilst I shivered under the blast of the three retro-fitted industrial-sized Air Conditioning units and the thermal under wear that I wore close to my heart)and who could never sit still enough to stop talking! He lived in some backwater, Deep Down South Louisiana an...

Insurgency in deep South 'could evolve into civil war'
2007-07-15 16:32:00 Security expert: Need information strategyBy Post reportersA security expert warned yesterday insurgent violence in the deep South could degenerate into civil war. Political scientist Panithan Watanayakorn said the strife-torn region could be beset by guerrilla warfare, like Aceh in Indonesia.Mr Panithan, also security adviser to the prime minister, said it could then plunge into a catastrophic civil war.''It is important the government learns about this insurgent organisation to undermine its structure,'' he said.Mr Panithan said the insurgents had been successful in convincing the public they were capable of realising their goals.''And this reflects the futility of government efforts over the past 20 years [to tackle the unrest],'' he said.He said the state needed to develop a strategy of information management to counter the insurgency. He was speaking to a forum on violence in the deep South at a seminar on southern development organised by the Democrat party in Songkhla....

Deep South
2007-02-13 11:43:02 The lads from Top Gear learn a very important lesson. If you decide to paint, “Hillary for President”, “NASCAR Sucks”, “Country Western is Rubbish”, or “I’m Bi” on your vehicle, avoid filling up with petrol in a “hick” town in the deep South. Or else the “boys” will come for you in the ...
