Deep Thoughts

Indifference I don't really give two shits whom Obama or McCain picks as a running mate. Consider the Source(s) I believe that the leaking of a barrage of alleged e-mails between Sam Hoyt and his former paramour(s) to embarrass Hoyt a few weeks before the election undoubtedly originates from City Hall. ...
Story of My Life
2008-06-02 18:01:00
My story “Hot Enough For Ya?” is up at Lipstick. It has nothing to do with the temperature.  The tagline describes my situation well: Life isn’t all a bed of roses when you marry a stud muffin. *******************************-************** Two years ago in My Tiny Kingdom: Exhausted Mom Seeks Validation
Deep Thoughts On The Playoffs
2008-04-29 20:28:00
It's time for another edition of "Deep Thoughts." In this installment, I take enjoyment in the struggles of Carey Price, wonder how moronic Darian Hatcher actually is, marvel at the scouting prowess of the Detroit Red Wings, show the Dallas Stars some respect, and pass along some links and video. Enjoy.
Deep Thoughts Vol. 6
2008-04-29 06:44:00
Do you hear that? Over in la belle provence? That's the collective "Uh-Oh" coming from the good folks in Montreal after Carey Price channeled his inner Andrew Raycroft last night in Philadelphia, allowing three goals on only 12 shots.More and more is Price beginning to look like the 20-year-old kid he is. The pressure in the Stanley Cup playoffs is immense and Philadelphia is a tough building to play in.Here's what I wrote back on April 3: "I think, and hope, the Canadiens end up regretting trading (Cristobal) Huet instead of keeping him as insurance for the playoffs."Dreams, my friends, can come true. With the Flyers now up two-to-one over Montreal, I can't help but think of Happy Gilmore headbutting Bob Barker and telling him: "The price is wrong, bitch." Best. Cameo. Appearance. Ever.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Still on the Flyers/Habs series, is Darian Hatcher not the biggest doofus in the NHL? His hit from ...
Deep Thoughts Vol. 5: Playoff Hockey
2008-04-22 06:30:00
Even though the Maple Leafs are off enjoying the marvelous spring time weather these days in Toronto (read: they're golfing), I still find myself glued to the television each night to watch playoff hockey. The playoffs are a beautiful thing. So, how about Martin Brodeur's pure snubbage of SuperDouche Sean Avery after the Devils were eliminated on Friday night? Pretty low of Brodeur if you ask me. Well, even if you didn't ask me, I'm telling you. That's, umm, kind of the point of this blog.Anyway, I think it (the snubbery) only proved how effective Avery was at throwing Brodeur off his game. Marty didn't have a Brodeur-type series. Far from it. He finished 1-4 with a 3.19 goals against average and an .891 save percentage and was a big reason why the Devils were dispatched so quickly in five games (I predicted the Devils to win, of course). Avery was in Marty's head, no doubt.George Vecsey wrote an interesting column about the Avery/Brodeur drama in the New York Times. Check it ...
All For One
2008-04-15 15:23:00
The other day Porter came home from school crying. “Drew and Jay are always making fun of me and I can’t take it anymore,” he said. Although they’re in the same grade, Drew and Porter have always been in separate classes, and pretty much maintain distinct groups of friends. Drew has been spending lots of time ...
Eggs ?n Ovaries
2008-04-14 15:30:00
My mom died suddenly two and a half years ago . She’d just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her cancer was quite advanced by the time it was detected, which is too often the case. I guess people who haven’t lost a parent think I should “be over it,” but the truth is ...
I Can?t Shut Up About Snacks
2008-04-01 15:40:00
You would think that everyone would have STOPPED the sports-related snack madness, but they haven’t. My third graders’ soccer team is STILL having after-game snacks. Nothing like Oreos at 10 am. At least I’m not on my friend’s 4k T-ball team. They practice TWICE A WEEK from 4:30 to 5:30 pm and the ...

1. If you're too open minded, your brains will fall out.2. Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.3. Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.4. Dear Elyssa, Sarabeth and Jenna
2008-03-13 14:28:00
I was shocked when I heard the news about Eliot Spitzer. As the details emerged, I had a flashback to the mid 80’s that made me sick to my stomach. I’ve experienced many of the same feelings that I’m sure the Spitzer girls are now, although I didn’t have to do it under a ...
Deep thoughts with Robbie Williams
2008-03-13 00:00:00
You have to watch the Robbie Williams’ whole video to understand what he was so philosophical about. I was only able to pay attention to it because he had a mangina and we didn’t get to see his peepee. If you really want to see his peepee, go to Dlisted!

2008-03-05 19:18:00
While the rest of the market was busy concerning themselves over the nonsensical drama surrounding bond insurers, I spent the day in the trenches looking to capitalize on a market that wants to go higher. After taking profits yesterday on the majority of my bearish positions (while the market held support)I am left with a delta positive account...which is something I am trying to monitor closely heading into tomorrows trading. Thanks to some timely movements over the last few days/weeks...here are a few things on my mind... Should I take profits? What was that for? Are these stocks ever going down? Are these stocks ever going up?See you in the morning.
Hey! You Do Too Much!
2008-02-19 15:56:00
A couple of years ago there was a boy on one of my sons’ teams, and he was playing every sport offered that season. Often on Saturdays he’d go straight from the soccer game to his baseball game, and that still left lacrosse to do. He was a reasonably good athlete but his ...
What Is Love, Anyway?
2008-02-13 19:40:00
I overheard a woman at Jazzercise saying that her husband can’t stand Valentine’s Day. He also hates to say “I love you.” His theory is that she ought to know he loves her– they’re married, right? Well, that isn’t necessarily so. I know plenty of men who have cheated on their wives or abused them, ...

Deep Thoughts Vol. 4
2008-02-08 07:06:00
Damon Stoudamire didn't become a Toronto Raptor for the second time in his career this week. Instead, the Raptors got even better news on Monday. T.J. Ford came back. Welcome back, Little Engine. You've been missed. Watching Ford check into the game Monday night in Miami was something I won't soon forget. He had a huge smile on his face and Jose Calderon gave him a hug, a tap on the head, and some words of encouragement. Calderon seemed genuinely happy and excited about Ford's return, and that is exactly why I dig Jose. He's the ultimate teammate. He's not thinking that the Raptors number one point guard is back in the lineup; he's thinking that his friend T.J. Ford is back in the lineup. The Raptors were buoyed by Ford's return. They made sure T.J. would get some minutes by absolutely thrashing the Miami Heat 33-12 in the first quarter. The game was over after 12 minutes. It was the perfect scenario for Ford to return to. Ford looked good in almost 17 minutes on the floor. ...

Long Routes, Deep Thoughts
2008-01-18 16:49:00
Was just out for some shopping yesterday, mom is in Pakistan these days, and i just lurv to be in the front seat ;) as u have an exciting ride through the Hi's n Low's of the route. Just viewing all that is ahead, the lights, the traffic, the hustle n bustle going around on the roads, all the world that is outside. I just love reading people's faces, observing reactions and behaviours( the 7 ways i found of how poeple really steer a motorbike :P ) its fun how we get a chance to see so much so that is out there, both of the living and the non-living. And one of my dreams includes a long n i mean a loooooooong drive along the countryside. WHY only the countryside coz now i have just got tired of viewing the same highways and the traffic flooded roads, so for a change i need a trip to the countryside, narrow roads, dangerous turns, all the life that is besides the road-sides. I believe that the view would be just fantastic, the cool breeze, the light fog, the clear chirps, the wet g...

Finn Discovers His Sixth Sense
2008-01-10 15:11:00
A mother should always trust her instincts, but if I had done that last night Finn would not have made an important discovery. I’ve always decreed that the day we arrive in New York we must eat close to home and settle in early. Boys may be bounding like kangaroos in the 150 square feet ...
Deep Thoughts From My Office Email Junk Box

Go Outside And Play With Guns
2007-12-18 23:22:00
I lost the battle over having toy guns in the house way back when Finn was a toddler, and then I handed the whole firearm issue over to Bill. So while we are notorious hard asses about media, you might describe us as incredibly lax in another area (besides haircuts). Each boy owns an ...

Hussies?
2007-11-09 04:16:00
Sixth-grade girls are calling the house. They’re polite when they ask to speak to Finn, but after I’ve gotten him to the phone and debated and rejected the idea of eavesdropping on the conversation, my curiosity turns, just a little, to disapproval. Back in my day, we didn’t call boys on the phone. ...
The Math Geeks And Me
2007-10-31 03:02:00
The Math Geeks are a tough crowd. Several weeks ago I submitted my post Beyonce and I Fail Division to a couple of sites that were publishing articles about mathematics. I thought the mathematicians would enjoy a comical diversion from the rigors of string theory as well as a peek into the world ...
How Close Friends Know They?re Aging
2007-10-29 16:01:00
My Artistic Friend had a birthday last week.  I keep a stash of things I pick up during the year to give as gifts, but as I started to wrap her present, I had a sinking feeling that I’d given her the same thing last year. So I called her. Artistic Friend: “Hello?” Absentminded Me:  “Happy Birthday!  I ...

This Friday, the 26th, is the second anniversary of my mom’s death. Here is the first column I wrote about her death, and “A Blessing” provides a few more details. Here is what I wrote about the occasion last year. You’ll see that some of these columns have tags under them– you can click ...
Take Off Your Pants
2007-10-24 16:53:00
“Hell’s bells!  Those are way too short.  Take them off immediately and put them in Drew’s pile,” I told Porter.  He wiggled out of them and tossed them into the mountain of capri-length pants he’d already tried on. Later I dismissed him and summoned my mac daddy.   Drew and I went through Porter’s discards and were ...
Mortality
2007-10-23 21:53:00
In the last two and a half days I’ve had a chance to really examine my own mortality. It’s a strange sensation really - to think about the world without you in it. To think about your friends, family, pets, possessions, home no longer being there when they were just there a moment ago. This morning ...
Deep Thoughts with Dusty Baker

Dusty's return has already been a boon to BTL:Ken Griffey Jr. will become the latest of the exclusive 600 home run club to be associated with Baker."I played with Hank Aaron," Baker said. "I managed Barry (Bonds) and Sammy (Sosa). Now Junior. People ask how they compare. They're all great. Are there degrees of greatness?"Yes? Not even sure what else to say here; the answer is just too obvious.

Sappy But Happy
2007-10-12 02:49:00
In the days of Disco Break and Saturday Night Fever, it felt like our parents partied all the time. Every weekend my sisters and I would watch Hee-Haw or The Love Boat while my mom put on a chiffon skirt and purple sequin halter top and my dad shaved and dabbed on Aqua-Velva. ...

Peace News: The War Prayer

An Ode To Osmosis
2007-09-20 04:47:00
I remember learning about osmosis, the process by which water moves across a membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration, in Mrs. B’s 7th grade biology class. The idea was difficult for me to grasp, and my mother spent hours with me in the den going over the difference in ...
Medical Humor - Deep Thoughts
2007-09-11 14:48:00
One of life’s mysteries is how a two pound box of candy can make A person gain five pounds. Brain cells come and go but fat cells live forever. Life not only begins at forty, it begins to show. I had to give up jogging for my health. My thighs kept rubbing together and setting my pants on ...
I?m Making Eggs And I Don?t Mean Scrambled
2007-09-10 15:21:00
One of Finn’s teachers had the nerve to assign Bill and me homework.  She sought information about Finn’s personality, his dreams, fears and passions.  Referring her to this website did not appear to be an option, and because I didn’t know the teacher, I couldn’t very well write “Finn is just like me, but with ...
TT - Deep Thoughts about Pigs & Sheep
2007-09-07 00:38:00
- Do you think sheep know when you're pulling the wool over their eyes? - Does the person who inventories sheep often fall asleep on the job? - If a pig is sold to the pawn shop is it then called a ham-hock? - If we make sweaters out of a sheep's hair, what do the sheep use to make sweaters? - If you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear what can you make with it? - If you pushed a pig down a hill would he be a sausage roll? - What do pigs say when they don't want to do something? Would it be 'Yea when humans fly'? - What do sheep count when they can't get to sleep? - Why can't pigs look up into the sky? - Why do pigs have curly tails? - Why do we call them guinea pigs when they are neither from Guinea nor are they pigs? - Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? - Why is it that only pigs and humans can get sunburn?
Most Unfair Parents EVER Today, Stars on Oprah Tomorrow
2007-09-05 15:16:00
Bill and I have hit a milestone.  We’ve felt the mixture of helplessness and pride that courses through your veins as the fruit of your loins looks at you and shouts, “I can’t believe you’re doing this to me.  That is SO harsh!” The child, of course, was Finn, and his failure to make his bed, ...
Deep Thoughts From THE RAD REPORT

Rock of Love is the stupidest TV show ever. Every Rose and Look what The Cat Dragged In were cool. But I’ve never heard such dumb shit come out of anyone’s mouth as what Bret Michaels says on this show. Just heard him say, dead serious, to his remaining hoes, my liver isn’t in that ...

Deep Thoughts
2007-07-31 19:16:00
After the food poisoning incident, I started on some new medication which has been kicking me in my cracked moon for the past week and a half. Still it’s better than food poisoning. The meds have sapped my energy and it’s hard to create motivation not to mention turn the funny on; however, due to the suppression of my humor gene, I’ve made some insightful insights. No, I was sober when I noticed these. I recently decided that the first time it cost me over $40 to fill up my tank, I was going to buy a bus pass. It happened in June. Here’s the deal — a monthly 2-zone bus pass is $30. I’m spending $80 a month in just gas alone to drive. Even better is the fact that I live near both jobs and can do a full circle from home to full-time job to part-time job and back to home in a matter of minutes, so I’ve been trying to leave the car at home and “reduce my carbon footprint”. In other words, taking the bus is extremely easy for me due t...
Not So Deep Thoughts
2007-06-26 15:08:00
Okay, so I'm 8 months pregnant now. Lately I've been thinking about the gigantic transition that my life is about to undergo. And that's it. I know it's coming...and I feel like there is some part of me that should be making some kind of incredible preparations, either mental or spiritual, to get ready for the responsibility of taking care of another human being. I feel like there should be BIG STUFF to do to get ready for his arrival. And I'm sitting around, totally ready and willing to do that BIG STUFF. But all I can think of to actually do is stupid little stuff like wash tiny little socks and clothes with baby detergent before putting them in the drawers of his dresser. Or set up the crib that he probably won't sleep in for a while anyway. I've bought diapers, and have started prewashing the cloth ones (we decided to go 50/50 for now. I chose these, which are ridiculously cute right now, in no way indicating what they will soon contain!)Anyway...shouldn't I be doing or ...
Bad Bride

People generally write in to ask me parenting questions, and I am full of nifty solutions like sprinkling baby powder on your eight-year-old’s butt to induce sleep. More Deep Thoughts From Our Britney
2007-05-30 07:42:00
While Britney may not exactly hit the mark on fashion lately, she certainly is trying to redeem herself in other ways! It seems that her first note she left us on her website wasn't enough because she's done it again. In it, she tells us that she's had to cut some ties and just not care what others think. The letter is actually quite long so to read it in full, click here. Otherwise here's just part what Brit confides..."Recently, I was sent to a very humbling place called rehab. I truly hit rock bottom. Till this day I don't think that it was alcohol or depression. I was like a bad kid running around with ADD. I had a manager from a long time ago come in and try to direct me and my life after I got my divorce. I was so overwhelmed I think that I was in a little shock too. I didn't know who to go to. I realized how much energy and love I had put into my past relationship when it was gone because I genuinely did not know what to do with myself, and it made me so sad. I confess,...
