Collecting sheds extends deer hunting season
2010-11-24 00:01:00
The warm winter sun reflects off an ivory spike sticking up out of the snow. It is a shed, a deer antler dropped by a buck that nor longer has use for it. Nature's way of telling the buck that the mating season was over and it is time to concentrate on making it though the winter.

2010-11-12 03:11:00

"Living with White-tailed Deer in Illinois" Website Launched
2010-08-30 03:22:00
The IDNR manages deer in order to provide quality outdoor recreational opportunities, while also attempting to minimize negative human-wildlife interactions and threats to public safety, especially deer vehicle collisions. White-tailed deer are the largest native mammal found in Illinois, and many people are very interested in the proper management and continued welfare of deer in the state
Coyotes may affect deer populations in the Southeast
2010-07-03 15:47:00
The Journal of Wildlife Management - Deer populations are declining in the southeastern United States, and coyotes may be contributing to this decline. Although cause-and-effect studies have not been conducted, the expansion of the coyote's range and its increasing numbers have coincided with the decline in deer. Wildlife management policies, such as limiting hunting of deer or manipulating habitat to ensure greater fawn survival, may therefore need to be adjusted.

Deer win at Goose Lake Prairie State Park
2010-01-18 02:55:00
My first season hunting for deer at Goose Lake Prairie State Park ended today with a score of Deer 1, Dz... 0. I had all the confidence in the world that I would fill my tag today.  The morning started with me seeing at least 10 deer running across a field.  Unfortunately they came across the field about 150 yards from where I was sitting.  They all went into the G.E. property where no hunting is allowed. All of those deer were on the run.  Some other hunting must have spooked them up.  Even if they were closer, I would have never had a good shot. An hour later, a bit closer were four more deer.   Still too far for...
It's the last inning for the Late Winter deer season
2010-01-17 04:14:00
Friday and Saturday at Goose Lake Prairie State Park did not go without a few deer being taken from the herd.  Unfortunatly, not by me or my hunting partner Dan Stefanich of Wilmington. We saw deer, but none close enough to shoot at.  Others did get a shot and filled their tag. Sunday morning at 5 AM will be the final check in. Wish us luck guys, it's our last chance to get a deer in the 2009/2010 hunting season....
Tell me about your deer hunt for 2009
2009-12-29 03:03:00
Did you get out deer hunting this year?  How did you do? The numbers for the two firearm seasons were down from last year.   Check out my article in Tuesday's Chicago Tribune. I hunted both seasons in southern Illinois with the Boneyard Outfitters.  I saw a many does but let them all pass.  It was the typical situation where they kept looking over their shoulder.  Big buck following them?  Never saw one in the woods. The corn was up for both seasons and I did see some monster bucks.   They would take only a step or two out of the corn, look around then retreat to the safety of the standing corn. Let me know how your season went.  Send...
Deer for Breakfast
2009-12-03 19:00:00
Back in my hometown in northeastern Pennsylvania this weekend ushered in Deer Hunting Season.  An event so big that the first day of hunting season is a vacation day from school.  I used to love having the first day of hunting season off from school - as it meant I got to spend time with my dad.Growing up in a largely agricultural -community deer hunting was a way of life, and supported many families with meat through the winter.  I remember many times going hunting with my father, we would find a gully or depression to sit in and wait for deer to pass by so we could pull out our rifles and gun them down.  I remember more often though, my...
2009-2010 Deer Season
2009-09-10 05:49:00
Started scouting a few of the farms we are hunting this year. This year we are doing something different. We will be filming our entire season, to document our hunts from start to finish. I have filmed a little bits of my hunts in years past, but nothing compared with what out team plans to do this year. It should be interesting since we are hunting Kentucky as well as Indiana. In our films we are going to explain different tips and techniques that we use to have successful hunts. We will also be showing, and explaining the different products that make our hunts successful. To elaborate even further, we will also show the difference in the deers behavior at different stages of the season, and rut from early archery, through shotgun, muzzle-loader, and late archery. We know that everyone has their own ways of producing solid results, and big bucks, so we just intend to share how we do it, and the products that we use. In addition to that we plan on making short video tutorials in bet...

Mechanical Animals ? Robocow and Decoy Deer (Part 3)
2009-03-11 06:01:00
Robots could be used as replacements for real animals for repetitive training scenarios and catching law-breakers. Does a robot calf sound like a better way to train a cutting horse than sending a real calf out of the chute to be chased-down 50 times a day? Does a robotic deer sound better tha

In Other Words: Deer & Angels
2008-10-28 05:00:00
W henever we go into town near dusk, our younger kids will beg for us to go the “deer way”.  It’s along dirt roads and by several lakes and then in one particular area we always see deer.  Sometimes there will be 40 deer, just grazing in the alfalfa field.  We pause, watching.  There are times they just stay eating as they watch us in return, but if one runs across the road to the wooded area, the rest follow.  This happened one day this past summer when our youngest daughter who is five was with us.  We had to stop completely to let them all cross over.  We could see the deer in the woods, peering around the trees watching us, probably hoping we’d leave so they could go back to the alfalfa field.  With eyes of wonder, our daughter in a whispered awe said, “They’re like angels . . . watching us.”  So simple - yet so profound. We do not participate with Halloween.  I hate it more each year.  When our oldest children were yo...

A Deer of Nine Colors
2008-10-03 11:37:00
A Deer of Nine Colors is a film produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio. It is also referred to as ''"The Nine Colored Deer"''. Background The original story is based on the Buddhist Jataka tale of the same name, which were discovered as cave paintings from the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China. The animated plot is essentially a spinoff. Story In ancient times a Persian trade merchant was lost in a windstorm. Suddenly a spiritual deer with 9 colors appear to guide the man with directions. Later on the deer would rescue a man drowning in a river. In exchange the man makes a promise not to talk about the deer's whereabouts. The man would reach an imperial palace. The king insisted on hunting down the spiritual deer down to make clothes out of the deer skin. With an army of warriors, the man could not resist the profit opportunity and led them to the same spot as before. He falls back into the same water, hoping the deer would show up to rescue him. This time all the warrio...

Deer Sheikhu
2008-07-30 07:50:00
Those who take their chance to cross the River Ravi from Saghian Bridge to go to Sheikhupura in the suburbs of Lahore have to pass through the flower nurseries. Also, along the road has come up a Flower Market near Saghian Bridge. After turning on Sheikhupura-Sargodha Road from the Chowk where a beautiful replica of Hiran Minar (The Deer Tower) has been made, you drive along the bumpy two-way road lined up on both sides with smoke emitting factories of different kinds: fabrics, chemicals, glass, and paper pulp. At places the pungent whiff reminds as if one is driving on Grand Trunk Road near Kala Shah Kaku. Wall chalking, religious and or commercial slogans - is another thing that one notices all along the road to Sheikhupura.Jehangir Abad turned Sheikhupura is situated in Ravi-Chenab corridor and fast turning from a market agricultural town to an industrial city. Adjacent to Lahore, the town is surrounded by old places like Sangla Hill (old Sakala), Nankana Saheb (birth place of Ba...

Deer Hunt Damage
2008-06-04 02:54:00
A deer hunter was out enjoying a nice day out in the woods when he decided to take a leak. He walked over to a tree and propped up his gun. Just then a gust of wind blew, the gun fell over and discharged shooting him in the genitals. Several hours later, lying in a hospital bed, he was approached by his doctor, who said, "Well sir, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that you are going to be OK. The damage was local to your groin, there was very little internal damage and we were able to remove all of the buck shot." "The bad news is that there was some pretty extensive damage done to your manly part I'm going to have to refer you to my brother." "Oh, well I guess that isn't too bad," the man replied "is your brother a plastic surgeon?" "Not exactly. he's a flute player in the local symphony. He's going to teach you where to put your fingers so you don't pee in your eye" (via Phil’s Phun)

Deer Lake - Club Tournament #2 - May 18, 2008
2008-05-25 00:00:00
Going into Deer, I had a sneaking suspicion that things could be tougher.  My suspicions proved to be true for most of they field.  My partner, Matt Veech (Gopher Jr. Member) were last out, so we lingered around to fish some of the cabbage and shallow structure near the ramp.  I started out with a Matte Bluegill colored Ima Flit jerkbait, working the drop over where some cabbage tapered off from about 5 feet to 10ft.  Nothing happened there.  I then started flipping a 1/4oz Tru-Tungsten jig into some wood, I caught one that was so close to 14" but not quite.  I then worked my way onto a flat and caught 3 short fish on a RedEye Shad in Metallic Tn Shad.We then hopped to another area and Matt quickly caught several short fish drop shotting a baby brush hog.  I then tried my Baby Ring Fry with a 1/8oz Tru-Tungsten sinker pegged about 18" up the line and caught several short fish right along side of him.  As the sun got higher, we started pok...
