Defamation

Is Puttaparthi Glitter the ?Shining India??
2010-12-15 23:31:00
Many are the demonstrably mistaken accusations thrown at those who have stood forth to expose Sathya Sai Baba and his international sect. For example, typically taking our remarks badly out-of-context, it is said that we are: "India bashers". But they do their cause harm; and we learn that many Sai devotees will have nothing to do with them - although we also know that some who are close to Sathya Sai Baba have assisted them in various ways. Indeed, the absurdity and intellectual dishonesty of their attempts to defame will not win them the favour of astute and questioning readers.
More Testimony To Male Sexual Abuse By Sathya Sai Baba
2010-04-30 23:07:00
Below, Sebastian Engelbarts of The Netherlands relates his account of abuse experiences at the hands of Sathya Sai Baba. I need hardly point out that many testimonies have been shared with us with the request that they be kept confidential, and Robert Priddy and I (in our role of coordinators) have respected this. Others have stated that would only wish to make public their experiences in the context of investigation by, for example, a respected organization such as the BBC, Times of London, UNESCO, etc and/or by a court of law in a demoncratic country. I wish to add, as often, that for those who wish to avail themselves of legal or counseling services, we are happy to assist in obtaining those in the context of international best practice, with all the proper guarantees of accountability. In genuine circumstances of need, professionals in these areas can look to fee modification or waiver.
Michelle Goldberg, US Author-Journalist, on Sathya Sai Baba (1)
2009-10-07 23:53:00
It is one of the gambits of pro Sathya Sai Baba activists like Indulal Shah (when he was active), Dr G.Venkataraman and his virtual counterpart Gerald Moreno, to portray highly reputed media journalists as sensationalist, and so on. In their offensive and denunciatory style, they fail to credit world leading media journalists, and the researchers as well, ...

New Internet law in Indonesia criminalizes defamation
2008-04-16 07:06:00
Spreading defamatory information in Indonesia can land you up to six years in jail and a fine of 1 billion Rupees (US$15,765,400) under a new Internet law, says the Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA).The Electronic Information and Transaction Law, intended to combat online crime, pornography, gambling, blackmail, lies, threats and racism, also prohibits citizens from distributing any defamatory or insulting materials electronically, says SEAPA. Even a link to a Web site containing defamation is punishable under the new law.Indonesia's Press Council says the new law falls short of international standards and trends. Provisions are reminiscent of the "archaic, colonial laws" inherited from the Dutch, which criminalized defamation of rulers. But last year, the Indonesian Constitutional Court declared criminal defamation against the government unconstitutional. The council is seeking a review of the law, and an explicit exception for the press, fearing that reporters who choose the o...

realtor blogger sued for defamation by Opera Tower Miami condo developer Ti
2008-01-30 10:28:00
Of course, Lucas the blogger will end up successfully fighting this lawsuit, and I hope he counter-sues, but as you all know, for horrible people like Tibor Hollo (pictured above and yes, that's his real picture not a horror movie extra) who bring suits like these against bloggers or publications, it's not about winning, it's about sucking legal fees out of the small-potato target in a mean-spirited and petty way.Well, thanks to other blogs and the internet, sons of bitches like Tibor Hollo better think twice before bringing frivolous lawsuits against bloggers for expressing their opinions. So here's my opinion: Tibor Hollo is about to be ruined, in more ways than one. And his Opera Tower project is going to receive so much more negative publicity over this, that anyone who hadn't bailed before is definitely thinking of bailing now. The Great Miami Condo Crash is going to make mincemeat out of the desperate Miami developers who stupidly built thousands and thousands of unneeded...

Jakarta lawyers for TIME magazine are ready to file their appeal of a defamation judgment by the Supreme Court of Indonesia awarding $106 million in damages to former Indonesian President Haji Mohammad Suharto, a lawyer told the The Age Wednesday. Suharto sued TIME over a 1999 article that said Suharto had hidden billions of dollars in foreign banks. The Supreme Court overturned two lower court decisions against Suharto, ordering TIME to pay damages and publish a formal apology in Indonesian newspapers and its own magazine. Todung Mulya Lubis, one of TIME's lawyers and a prominent human rights advocate, told The Age that the case "goes to the very fundamental principles of press freedom and democracy in Indonesia," but said that he was confident that the ruling would be overturned because the review judges would not want to stifle the freedom of the press. In the 2007 annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders, Indonesia is ranked 100th out of the 167 ...

Debra Opri sues Larry Birkhead for Defamation
2007-10-03 06:58:00
Larry Birkhead loves to talk on talk shows. Now he’s getting sued for what he said on one show by former attorney Debra Opri. Birkhead says what he stated was the truth. She says it was lies and wants him to pay, but will donate all the money she wins to charity. Can Larry Birkhead just go away? The Anna Nicole upcoming suits have enough programming for Court TV to last them for years. Opri’s suit says Birkhead engaged in a “malicious and relentless media campaign to discredit me and to destroy my reputation,” according to a statement from Opri released to E! Online. Birkhead denies. We aren’t going to explain the still pending actions between Opri and Birkhead; they’re a big yawn and basically are a fight over money that currently is in neither parties’ hands. To think how exciting and wonderful and beautiful Anna Nicole Smith was, and now how her death has become just a mess of suits like this. Sad, but true. We do miss Anna. Sourc...
