DePaul defense dominates Chicago in exhibition
2009-11-07 05:29:00 Eric Wallace shows off his athleticism by completing an alley-oop in the first half. There's no chance that DePaul holds another team to 36 points for the rest of the season. Yet for a team with questions on the defensive end, the Blue Demons came out with intense ball-pressure and a strong overall defensive effort that will be the key to the season. DePaul forced 22 turnovers and came away with an 81-36 exhibition victory over the University of Chicago. The most welcome part of the DePaul offense in the first half was the motion and teamwork the five DePaul starters showed on the court. Devin Hill, Jeremiah Kelly, Mac Koshwal, Eric Wallace and Will Walker showed that, unlike last year, the...
Bulls beat Milwaukee 83-81 in defense-fest.
2009-11-04 04:27:00 This game was a tale of two quarters really. The first quarter where the Bulls offense was absolutely atrocious, and the 3rd quarter where the Bulls took a huge chunk of Milwaukee's lead away from them. All in all, this game was an excellent representation about my fears with the Bulls. The offense is just going to be rough while the defense can be excellent. From the end of the 1st quarter through the 3/4ths of the way through the fourth quarter the Bulls defense was absolutely dominant not allowing anything and contesting everything. However, over that time, the Bulls still struggled considerably for a large portion because the offense was so bad. The Bulls held the Bucks to...
Moose, Wolves go to shoot out; Moose take a win from tough Wolves defense
2009-10-24 09:27:00 Chelios adds jump to Wolves; Moose win in OT Fans meeting in the Allstate Concourse before the game October 23, 2009. Credit: Jane RickardRosemont, Ill.--- The Manitoba Moose and the Chicago Wolves couldn't settle the winner of their game in regulation or a five minute overtime period. Instead it was a battle of the older generation that finally settled the winner, as 42 year-old Moose Captain Mike Keane and Matt Pettinger, 29, scored shoot out goals on Manny Legace, 36, spoiling 47 year-old Chris Chelios' homecoming. It was a defensive battle, as you might expect with a leading NHL defenseman on the ice and a new coach who won the Calder Cup by executing a outstanding defense. Legace and Moose...
In Defense of Dogs: Markley Misses the Mark
2009-10-17 18:15:00 It's like two countries at war - &-nbsp; &n-bsp; &nb-sp; &nbs-p; A couple of days back, ChicagoNow blogger Stephen Markley posted on why he hates dogs. Then, of course, I post a response, Barking in Defense of Dogs. This morning - a historic moment, which reader Mr. Brown Thumb called "The Milk Bone Summit," Steve and Stephen meet - I invited Markley on my WLS Radio Show, Steve Dale's Pet World. (We'll archive for those who missed the historic moment and once posted on the WLS website, I'll let you know). Sure, Markley (who calls himself the greatest writer you've never...
Barking In Defense of Dogs On-the-Air
2009-10-17 02:06:00 Chicago Now blogger Stephen Markley posted that it's a ruff world if you hate dogs....I posted a reply, barking in defense of dogs. Many of you commented. Now you can hear the dog hater himself on the air. Stephen appears on my WLS Radio show tomorrow (Oct. 17) morning, just after 6 AM on WLS-AM (890 AM or at www.wlsradio.com). We will all hear why the guy - who has never been bitten or attacked (by all accounts) growls about canines. How can anyone hate a face like this? Also, on the show the irrepressible Miss Meowsky of Barker & Meowsky: A Paw Firm. She has the latest on the trendiest costumes for our pets. Miss Meowsky also tells about a...
Barking In Defense of Dogs
2009-10-15 04:37:00 This is my reply to fellow Chicago Now blogger Stephen Markley's post about why he simply doesn't like dogs, or for that matter - it seems - animals.Poor Stephen (odd we share a very similar name) begins by talking about the barking dog ordinance recently passed in Chicago (which i don't believe is a bad thing), cheering that it makes him happy that dog owners' experience just a sliver of the grief he has by not liking dogs. Wishing grief on others is an odd trait to be proud of...As he continues in his post, it becomes clear that he isn't writing about the city ordinance, after all, but rather why he hates dogs.Hate is a pretty strong word...and...
Bad Timing In Missile Defense Decision
2009-09-18 14:06:00 So President Obama is scrapping the Bush “Missile Defense program” that was planned to protect Europe from Iran. Yes, I know. There is some question if the missile defense was any good against the actual threat, and all it seemed to do is irritate Russia. And it’s not like the program would merely be scrapped: there ...
Ask Wale: Steelers' defense, longer NFL season and Packers' recap
2009-09-17 17:54:00 ASK WALEE-mail me here. I will be answering your questions about the Bears and life in the NFL every week on my blog. I am a Bears fan in West Virginia and this is Steeler country. I have been waiting on this game, every since the Steelers beat us down 4 years ago. My question is do you remember that game? And if so, do you all use that as a motivation even though it was a few years back? I know I remember it and it seemed as if they was just more physical. I say its payback time! Bear Down on the Steelers. - Thanks, Charles McCroskey...
Genius!!! Still Going with the Isolated Incident Defense ACORN??
2009-09-15 16:01:00 Just like good chess players, James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles had to have known their opponents moves well ahead of their own. After releasing an incredibly damaging video last week which revealed extreme corruption in ACORN (not exactly shocking to anyone who has been following their maneuvering), ACORN representatives immediately went into smoke-screen mode, claiming ...
Werner, Williams Finally Healthy To Lead Experienced Purdue Defense
2009-09-08 03:35:00 WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA-- Jason Werner had lost count of exactly how long ago his last football game was. "It's been awhile, right? Over 500 days since I last played," the Purdue linebacker said wistfully after recording 11 tackles in the Boilermakers' season-opening win over Toledo. Almost, Jason. The actual number is 619 days...nearly two years since Werner played in the 2007 season finale. That means almost 15,000 hours of waiting, dreaming, and agonizing from the sideline...nearly 900,000 minutes of a football player not being able to compete on the field. So we can forgive the Greenwood, Indiana native for being antsy....

Defense Saves the Day: Indiana Hangs On, Beats Eastern Kentucky 19-13
2009-09-07 04:05:00 Thank goodness for experience. The veteran Hoosiers defense, which gave up more than 35 points per game last season, allowed just one touchdown, forced a crucial fumble, sacked the quarterback four times and had a safety to lead the Hoosiers to season opening win in renovated Memorial Stadium. Though the win certainly wasn't pretty, there were signs of encouragement. New starting quarterback Ben Chappell was solid throwing 27 of 36 for a career-high 326 yards with one touchdown and receiver Tandon Doss also caught eight passes for 125 yards, a career-high. But, Bill Lynch's revamped offense failed to run the ball with any consistency, something that has been a point of emphasis in the offseason....

Projecting The Roster: Defense
2009-08-25 09:24:00 You know why I love this site and you guys? Because yesterday we argued the merits of carrying either a second fullback (Jason Davis) or a fullback/tight end hybrid (Michael Gaines). Let's see what we can cook up today. Again, we're assuming the Bears repeat the 25/25 breakdown of 2008.DEFENSIVE LINE (Last year: 9)This year: Tommie, Adams, Izzy, Harrison, Ogunleye, Brown, Anderson, Gilbert, MeltonNote: I know the consensus thought is the Bears will take Matt Toeaina after Dusty Dvoracek confirms that he's not going to play this season. I just have the feeling that Jerry and Lovie will have a hard time letting Henry Melton go. Matt Toeaina spent time on the practice squad a year ago without being picked...

Gay panic defense wins in Cook County
2009-07-15 06:05:00 Let me give you a hypothetical situation:You're out drinking, and you're getting heavily intoxicated. A neighbor, who you may or may not have met before, offers to let you come back and drink with him at his place when the bartender won't serve you any more. You agree. Once you get back to the neighbor's place you pass out. You wake up, and the friendly neighbor is now brandishing a dagger and trying to sexually assault you. Question: do you grab the dagger and stab your attacker in self-defense:a) a couple of times, enough to get away and run for help,b) 5 or 10 times, can't remember because you were terrified,c) 15 or 20 times--the first 5 or 10 stabs...

But don't count the editors at Web si

Mental Conditioning for Self Defense
2009-04-27 17:00:00 The term 'Mindset' gets thrown around a lot in the self-defense and training community, and a lot of people don't really understand it or articulate it well. Many of the "Survivor Mindset" and "Warrior Mindset" proponents talk about mental attributes as if they were bolt-on parts and once fully kitted out you will be ready. I would argue that it is a little more complicated than that.

The Defense Criminal Investigative Service appears to be focused on medical imaging contracts that the company has with the DoD. In early April, Siemens won a $267 million contract to supply radiology systems, subsystems and components on behalf of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and federal civilian agencies. At approximately 3:00pm today, the federal agents were seen loading large white file boxes into a van, and the agents confirmed that the boxes contained seized records?both computerized and paper records. Lance Longwell, director of public relations at Siemens, said that the search focused ...

In Defense Of Chris Dodd
2009-04-08 23:07:00 (And I also posted over here.)I have to say that, like many of you I?m sure, I?ve been watching the deterioration of Chris Dodd?s political fortunes with more than a bit of alarm. And I?ve been reluctant to say anything, that is, until I read this post from Megan McArdle of The Atlantic.I?m sure McArdle is a pretty bright individual, but I really have to wonder why she would write a post sourcing an editorial in the Augusta (GA) Chronicle attacking Dodd over the bonuses paid to executives of AIG (the editorial is fundamentally wrong for reasons I will note shortly). Another clue as to the partisan nature of the Chronicle editorial is the fact that it praises South Carolina Repug Gov. Mark Sanford for ?(doing) his best to wean his state off the cocaine of federal money. He knows it's corrupting. He knows it will mask the state's needs rather than fill them. He knows we are stealing from our children.?Gosh, what noble rhetoric from the Chronicle. Would that I and others had heard it...

I thought that any discussion of self defense would revolve around protecting oneself and the people that one cared about.

2009-03-25 10:13:00 Although many aspects of our economy are suffering, the federal construction market will most certainly be booming. On Friday March 20, 2009, the Department of Defense issued a 191 page Report to Congress detailing how it plans to spend the money it has received as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, also known as the “Stimulus Package.” The DoD has “identified specific investments in construction, facility improvements, and energy efficiency projects that will help improve the quality of life for our troops and their families.” Included in the Report is a very detailed breakdown of how the money will be spent. For each project anticipated, the included spreadsheet provides cost, a brief description of the work, and the project location The Recovery Act includes approximately $7.4 billion in Defense-related appropriations, which accounts for less than 1 percent of the total $787 billion stimulus package. In Defense of Nathan Fillion’s CASTLE
2009-03-11 16:28:00 With Entertainment Weekly calling CASTLE “an implausible muddle,” the Washington Post proclaiming it to be a “misbegotten MOONLIGHTING imitation” and theTVaddict.com’s very own Aleks Chan admitting that it’s “actually very boring,” one can only imagine the excitement this TV Addict was feeling for Nathan Fillion’s new series CASTLE. Which is why I waited until late last night — following a rather lengthy two-hour AMERICAN IDOL extravaganza — to give the show a shot, hoping that at the very least, Fillion and co-star Stana Katic’s playful back-and-forth would keep me awake until my traditional nightcap arrived in the form of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. Well, mission accomplished. Not only did CASTLE manage to keep me awake, it kept me laughing, smiling and most of all wondering how on earth anyone could fail to enjoy this show. (more…)

Defense! Investing in military stocks
2009-02-26 06:00:00 "Defense will rival infrastructure for receiving large federal contracts over the next few years," says Jim Powell (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2836) whose Changes & Opportunities Report (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2836) looks at the defense sector."Billions of dollars in equipment that was destroyed or worn out in Iraq must be replaced. In addition, thousands of new personnel must be trained and equipped."In addition –and this has suddenly become very important— defense spending pours billions of dollars into the economy.15 In some regions of the country, the defense business IS the economy. "Neither President Obama nor Congress should have any trouble sending fat checks to our leading defense contractors."In addition, no one can compete with America’s defense industry when it comes to planning and managing large projects. Companies that can build nuclear aircraft carriers and giant foreign bases are natural choices...
MURKOWSKI SAYS NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO CUT MISSILE DEFENSE

Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said today that now is not the time to cut missile defense funding as a key senator recently suggested.Murkowski was responding to news reports that said North Korea has built a new launch center for long-range missiles and that recent satellite images showed a North Korean train thought to be carrying a Taepodong-2 missile. Experts believe those missiles are capable of reaching as far as Alaska. North Korea test-fired a Taepodong-2 missile three years ago but the test was reportedly a failure.?As recently as July 2006, our ground based missile defense system was brought to the operational level for the first time to address North Korea?s launch of seven ballistic missiles,? 2009-02-17 02:24:00 Do people not grasp the difference between self-defense and lashing back in anger?I'm sure most of you have heard about the situation with Rihanna and Brown in the news. Beyond the glitz and the glamour that engulfed the lives of Rihanna and Brown, who until now had an image of a wholesome lovey-dovey couple, there is the central question of domestic violence. There are all kinds of questions as to what really happened. What seems to sicken me is this continuing attitude of, "What did she do to provoke this?"Notes of This Native Son was writing about a debate he was having regarding when it is okay to hit a women? Let me be clear about something! When we are talking self-defense when being attacked - you pull out all the stops! No man, woman or child should NOT feel they couldn?t defend themselves when in danger! I don't care who it is that is attacking you!The problem comes with some of these parties that try to give examples to show when its okay to beat the daylights out of som... |
