Property Management: Offense, Defense and Special Teams
2012-02-07 14:07:00 America’s great spectator sport is front and center with the Super Bowl taking place this past Sunday. In professional football, serious resources go into the process of putting a good team on the field. Each team has three smaller teams; offense, defense and special teams. Every good property manager needs the same structure. Is your ...This Article is Copyright © 2004-2011 BiggerPockets, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Property Management: Offense, Defense and Special Teams
Defense is not dead, and I love it
2012-01-17 16:27:00 2011 seemed to be a season in which high-powered offense ruled the NFL. But as this weekend’s playoffs concluded, three defensive powerhouses remain, and the high-flying aerial attacks of Green Bay and New Orleans were sent packing. But, sure, defense is just your daddy’s football … There’s no doubt that the passing attacks of teams... Read more »

2011-12-29 06:22:00 The 2011 Bridgepoint (?) Holiday Bowl from San Diego started off as a defensive battle for both the California Golden Bears and The Texas Longhorns, and ended with the Texas Defense causing Texas to prevail 21 to 10. It’s a generally accepted view that you can’t win a game by turning the ball over more (Read More...)
On "The Bill of Rights Day" Congress Passes The NDAA (National Defense Auth
2011-12-21 03:38:00 Naomi Wolf, who never fails to alert and alarm the masses, has an interesting reposted blog on her Facebook Page concerning the passage of the NDAA. The article says: Execllent and disturbing reporting, reposted here: Surefire, a military contractor, gave a quarter of a million to a single senator and stands to earn 23 million in sight raid equipment manufacture -- enough to outfit fifty thousand soldiers. But...in which war? The war in what is now Battlefield America? OpenSecrets.org shows Surefire lobbying for HR 1540 which is the House counterpart to the Senate bill, S. 1867, which was passed on Bill of Rights Day and which two retired Marine generals affirm, in a New York Times op-ed, abolishes the Bill of Rights. Retired four-star Generals Charles Krulak and Joseph Hoar write in opposing the new law:One provision would authorize the military to indefinitely detain without charge people suspected of involvement with terrorism, including United States citizens appre...
The Importance Of Getting Authorization Before Having A Self-Defense Weapon
2011-12-16 11:05:00 Every person worries about safety. There is definitely nothing wrong with having a personal defense device for security so long as it is done by the book. Whatever stun gun laws apply to your place of dwelling should be followed without fail.

In Defense of SUITS Star Patrick J. Adams’ SAG Nomination
2011-12-14 22:22:00  Every time award nominations are announced there is the usual hoopla about whether the various films, TV shows, actors and actresses were expected to get nominations — or if some miracle happened and someone out-of-the-blue nabbed a nomination. Today was no exception as the Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced and rising-star Patrick J. Adams’ name was announced for his work in the USA Network series SUITS.  Some critics were incredulous and some were ecstatic. Here at theTVaddict.com, we are among the ecstatic and are not at all incredulous at Patrick’s nomination. In fact, it was well-deserved.  For anyone who saw the pilot episode and the subsequently astounding episodes that followed, Patrick Adams’ performance as Mike Ross in SUITS covered the spectrum, from endearing to heart-felt to heart-wrenching to subtly funny. Best of all, Patrick made the character feel real. For fans of the show, most would agree that from the very first moment ...

In Defense Of...Meet Joe Black
2011-05-20 05:20:00 This is the fourth in a series of posts spotlighting the overlooked, underappreciated, and unfairly maligned movies of our time. Other films given the "In Defense Of" treatment include The Next Three Days, Multiplicity, and Speed Racer.First things first: I'm a sucker for movies in which the main character knows that life as he/she know it is over, and has a finite amount of time to set things right before they go. Plenty of films have tackled this plot device with varying degrees of success. But one of the best, and most misunderstood, of them all has to be Martin Brest's Meet Joe Black.A loose remake of Death Takes a Holiday, Meet Joe Black was released back in November 1998...
Heat stuff the Bulls behind huge defense effort
2011-05-19 05:19:00 The Bulls defense played well enough to win the game. The Bulls offense did not. Miami played some great defense, but the Bulls also simply missed easy shot after easy shot. They missed the tips they made last game, and in the end, the stat that did them in? The Bulls shot only 3/20 from the three point and 34% from the field. Even despite that horrific performance, they were still in the game as it was tied around the four minute mark. Then it was MVP time....

Bulls defense smothers the Hawks - Chicago is ECF bound
2011-05-13 06:00:00 Tom Thibodeau was about as upbeat as I've ever seen him in the post game press conference. That's because the Bulls threw out a defense that was absolutely extraordinary. Chicago clamped down on the Hawks in a way few teams ever clamp down on anyone. It wasn't matter of Atlanta missing shots. Atlanta had only a handful of good looks all game. The Bulls showed a lightning like double team, trapping anyone with the ball, but recovering to the open man too fast for Atlanta to do anything....

K.C. Johnson Breaking Down the Bulls Bad Defense in Game 4 (Audio)
2011-05-09 22:15:00 K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune joined Dan McNeil and Matt Spiegel at "The Danny Mac Show" on 670 The Score in Chicago. He discussed: the "team collapse" of the Bulls' "brutal" execution of Tom Thibodeau's defense in their Game 4 loss in Atlanta; Atlanta's adjustments -- trapping Derrick Rose and bigger lineup; Rose's 32 shots in the game, the insane comparisons to Russell Westbrook shooting the Thunder out of games, despite no one able to score in Game 4; the Hawks' offense better with more ball movement; Jeff Teague's abuse of Kyle Korver's defense and what would be the alternative.
In Defense Of...Speed Racer
2011-05-06 13:35:00 After disappointing audiences across the world with their lackluster sequels to The Matrix, The Wachowski Brothers faced an uphill climb on their next movie. Though they would go on to write and produce V for Vendetta in the interim, the big screen adaptation of the beloved '60s cartoon Speed Racer marked their return to the director's chair. Not everyone was thrilled. The trailers looked garish, the CGI looked cheesy and fake, star Emile Hirsch was not exactly a household name, and critics, eager to take the Wachowskis down a peg or two, had their knives out and sharpened. Seemingly to the industry's glee, Speed Racer was released the second weekend of May 2008 and became the first high-profile flop of the...
Atlanta trashes the Bulls #1 defense
2011-05-03 05:34:00 Joe Johnson went five for five from the three point line, and the Hawks shot over 50% from both the three point line and the field. Among other problems, the Bulls could not stop the Hawks early offense. Some Doctor Who Fans Need A Better Defense For Their Show
2011-04-28 17:45:00 Ratings.Appreciation Indexes. The word "millions".I strangely used one, or all three of these types of answers in a blog post on someone else's site who got pissed off with all of the attention that last Harry Potter film received. That blog post however was about the money people put towards fantasy films, it was not about the Harry Potter films themselves. Stupid as the three answers are as to why a film franchise or television franchise doesn't suck, they are seemingly the most common defenses against any criticism. Some Doctor Who fans are no different. Some people would believe that after reading my article that I am simply someone who has moved on from the show. This is true. I have moved on.The...
White Sox Season Preview 2011 - The Defense
2011-03-31 04:35:00 It's a World Series defense. I mean that as a joke, and also because the make-up is eerily similar. Both the 2011 and 2005 White Sox hide their lumbering sluggers on the right field foul line, both have pretty fantastic defenders on the left side of the infield, a small, speedy weak-armed left-fielder, a rangy, ground-covering centerfielder, a league average 2nd basemen, and A.J. Pierzynski behind the plate. Ok...so that's not perfect. Konerko is a lot older and slower than he was 6 years ago, Iguchi was better and more experienced than Beckham is at 2nd, and while Alex Rios and Brent Morel are good defenders, Joe Crede and Aaron Rowand had fantastic seasons in the field in 2005, and JD's glove hadn't fallen off a cliff yet in right. Still, kinda sorta similar. Whatever, introduction over.
Bulls lock down the defense, Derrick Rose scores 34 in win
2011-03-12 04:21:00 Derrick Rose struggled mightily in the first half, but he had a parade of superstar calls to go with a strong second half to finish with 34 points and put the game away for the Bulls. The Bulls had one stretch where a broken play gave them a four point play and then the Bulls missed rotations on the next couple possessions to give the Hawks another five points. Take out that nine point stretch and the Bulls defense was good all game.In the second half, it was dominant. The Hawks could get nothing going at all and scored only 26. They missed a few shots, but the Bulls went nuts contesting everything, forcing turnover after turnover and simply hounding the...

Bulls Winning Formula: Rebounding, Defense, Depth and Chemistry
2011-02-25 19:01:00 Derrick Rose put on another MVP like performance. He scored 26 to lead the Chicago Bulls over the Miami Heat 93-89 Thursday night in a showdown between two of the Eastern Conference's three top teams. Chicago beat Miami by three at the United Center last month, and this one, with possible seeding and therefore postseason home court on the line, was just as exciting. The Heat didn't have Lebron the first time, but his presence wasn't enough this time either. The Bulls bench outscored Miami 22-2 and the Heat got outrebounded 53-39 while losing for only the second time in 13 games. Both losses have come against the teams right at the top of the conference with them. Boston...
Kaymer defense of Tiger Woods honor refreshing but ...
2011-02-08 19:19:00 Martin Kaymer is standing up for Tiger Woods before their two-day golf pairing at the Dubai Desert Classic this week, defending the now number three's right to sort out his private life for the sake of the game. "Tiger shouldn't be getting a hard time," number two golfer in the world, Kaymer, told reporters, declaring that the world of golf should be "thankful" for what Woods has done for it. Lee Westwood, playing in the pairing with Kaymer and Woods at Emirates Golf Club, may not be defending Woods' honor but understands that Woods still adds excitement to the game, "I'm watching how Tiger is playing. I'm seeing if he's playing well." Speaking of a great honor, golf fans around the world should congratulate Westwood for being awarded lifetime membership on the European Tour. George O'Grady, Europe's chief executive, said of Lee Westwood, "the fact that only 12 other players have claimed the position of Number One over a 25-year period speaks volumes for the enormity o...
Packers Defense Carries them to Super Bowl 45
2011-01-24 05:32:00 Similar to the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears ugly match-up in week 17, someone had to win the NFC Championship. After three quarters of stifling defense and a riveting fourth quarter, the Packers edged out the Bears 21-14 to become the second-ever #6 seed to make the Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLV will mark the Packers fifth overall appearance in the biggest game of them all. In that game, they will be vying for their fourth Lombardi Trophy. It may be hard to fathom, but it wasn't Aaron Rodgers or Clay Matthews who stole the headlines this Sunday. It was a couple of rookies in CB Sam Shields, P Tim Masthay and second-year DT B.J. Raji who came...
Most Efficient NBA Defense: Bulls

Defense dooms Chicago State in Great West opener
2011-01-09 05:43:00 Chicago State came into Saturday's game against Utah Valley searching for a new beginning after a difficult non-conference schedule that saw the Cougars go 3-13 with just one win over an NCAA Division I squad. The start of Great West Conference play against the Wolverines at the Jacoby Dickens Center offered a chance to begin anew. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they ended up on the wrong side of a 93-82 defeat. The loss was Chicago State's fifth in a row and all the previous four were blowouts against decent mid-majors and major conference teams. Head coach Tracy Dildy sees a team that is struggling with its confidence and defense."We have a group that's really fragile and we're still trying to find...
Defense Does It's Job, Offense Doesn't Show Up.....
2011-01-03 01:40:00 The Bear Defense stifled and frustrated the Cheese-Heads for the entire 1st half (setting us up for a 3rd quarter "blitz" like we've seen in recent victories). Then in the 3rd quarter, Charles Tillman intercepts Aaron Rodgers and the Bears were in business in GB territory. Then the "unthinkable" happens, Cutler's "evil-twin" throws an interception that the Packers turn into 3 points, thus tying the game at 3 all.It was it this point that I knew that we'd blown the game, and I was right. We could have taken a 10-0 lead in the game, and "silenced" those "fool-ass" "cheese-head fans" in their own house (if any Packer fans don't like my words, take it up with me during tomorrow...
Bulls defense tearing it up - credit the coach
2010-12-23 13:19:00 One of the big concerns about Carlos Boozer coming back to the Bulls was his impact on the defense. Boozer hasn't ever been known as much of a defender, and quite honestly, hasn't played a whole ton of defense since returning to the lineup either. However, Boozer's return to the lineup hasn't hurt the defense at all, in fact, the defense is playing better than ever, particularly at the close of games. What's more, it's so clear that the players have been coached up. That as time goes on in practice, they have learned to execute the system better, made faster rotations, and covered up on their man. The Bulls have been particularly strong in the clutch defensively recently. ...
Democrats Slip Bringing Terrorists to American Prisons into Defense Bill
2010-12-17 18:39:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Senator Mark Kirk (R, IL) is raising a red flag over the defense bill because the Democrat led House of Representatives and Democrat led Senate has slipped in a provision that would allow accused terrorists to be housed in prisons in the interior of the United States. In an apparent effort to get around the President's decision to ignore his own deadline to shut down the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba terrorist detention facility, the Democrat leadership included the provision in order to give terrorists and detainees in Guantanamo a place to go so that the Cuba-based facility can eventually -- and sooner rather than later -- be shut down. Senator Kirk blew the whistle on this horrible...
DePaul's defense does it the right way
2010-12-15 06:44:00 Tonight against Milwaukee is what Oliver Purnell's defense is supposed to look like. The Blue Demons managed to get the Panthers to play their pace and DePaul allowed 47 points in 62 possessions, a great .76 points per possession. You'll win a lot of games playing that style. The possessions were held in check because Milwaukee played a lot of good defense, which slowed down DePaul's offense and was the reason the Blue Demons only scored about a point per possession, 61 in 62, and because early in the game the Panthers were able to control the tempo. That's a bad habit that the Blue Demons are going to have to break moving forward. But for future reference, here's what a "good"...
Bulls Defense, Boozer's Easy Button Shows Thunder Are Who I Thought Th
2010-12-07 18:25:00 The Oklahoma City Thunder could never find a rhythm against the Bulls' shutdown defense or a dominant Carlos Boozer. Bulls broke even with them on the season at the United Center with a 99-90 win.
Bears defense is not invincible
2010-12-04 04:57:00 Since the bye week, the Bears are 4-0 with an improved offensive line, better 3rd down efficiency, a commitment to the run and Devin Hester's return to the kickoff team. With a dominant defense, the Bears are drawing attention to themselves after flying under the radar of recognition.
Northwestern played defense!
2010-11-20 05:29:00 This might come as a shock, but back at Welsh-Ryan Arena for their home opener, the Northwestern Wildcats actually played pretty good defense. The Wildcats, with a liberal sprinkling of many of the reserves, managed to hold Arkansas-Pine Bluff to just 45 points in 64 possessions, or .703 points per possession.Honestly, that's pretty good. Yes, it's the best the Golden Lions have done all season, but it's also by far the best Northwestern has done. While I still have some gripes about the defensive effort, and we'll get to those in a bit, at least there was some good old fashioned effort out on the court at home. Also, it seems like the Wildcats really are practicing defense, and will continue...
In defense of the shy guy
2010-11-17 02:47:00 Shy guys almost always throw me off. Perhaps it's partially my fault because I often attribute their quiet non-aggressive ways to lack of interest rather then the shy thing, but never the less, they confuse the hell out of me.
Life could be different for Notre Dame now that they have a defense
2010-11-16 08:54:00 This is not to say that Notre Dame just did not have a defense at all in the first 9 games of the season, and they might as well have not been there. Gary Gray and Darrin Walls have played as well as anyone could have hoped all year, Manti Te'o has been a ballhawk, and there was respectable team performances against Purdue, Boston College, and Pittsburgh. But there's a difference between having a defense that's occasionally serviceable, and on other occasions is immolated by Navy, and having a defense that's a weapon unto itself, one that wins games on its own. And make no mistake, by brutalizing Jordan Wynn, dismantling Utah's running game, holding the Utes 38 points below their scoring average, and making it so that an Irish offense that only managed 256 yards seem like a juggernaut, Notre Dame' defense (with lots of help from special teams) won the game for the Irish on Saturday. Which is an excellent development, because the Irish needed to find a non-traditional way t...
On DePaul's defense and rebounding
2010-11-15 05:17:00 The game between Chicago State and DePaul offered a unique moment in this season. It was the opening of the Oliver Purnell era at DePaul and it was also Tracy Dildy's first test against a Division I opponent. Now, Dildy obviously understands that it is going to take some time to build the talent at Chicago State and get to level of DePaul, but the game was still a lot of fun. Watching these two very similar styles go head-to-head proved to be very entertaining. (Don't believe me? Check out my photo-gallery from the game.)At first glance allowing the Cougars to score 81 points might look like a problem for DePaul, but considering that it was in 97 possessions, it's really... |
