Does Howard Dean Still Hate Deficits?
2009-09-18 06:00:00
In May 2005, trying to back away from his statement earlier that year that he hated “Republicans and everything they stand for,” then-chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Howard Dean claimed those remarks were “a little out of context.”  He then went on to tell us what he really hated: But I don’t hate Republicans as ...

Caffeine: Overcomer of Deficits
2008-11-29 10:22:00
Caffeine, the world’s most widely used psychoactive substance, attracts a lot of research. PubMed contains 23,000+ citations for caffeine, for instance. Caffeine also attracts controversy. Some scientists argue that caffeine is a benign and useful drug whose side effects are only of concern in regard to a small number of “sensitives”, including those with pre-existing anxiety or ...

Brain imaging links chronic insomnia to reversible cognitive deficits witho
2008-09-01 18:51:00
A neuroimaging study in the Sept. 1 issue of the journal Sleep is the first to find that cognitive processes related to verbal fluency are compromised in people with insomnia despite the absence of a behavioral deficit. These specific brain function alterations can be reversed, however, through non-pharmacological treatment with sleep therapy. Results of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning during verbal fluency tasks show that people with insomnia have less activation than controls in the left medial prefrontal cortex and the left interior frontal gyrus, two fluency-specific brain regions. However, participants with insomnia generated more words than controls on both the category fluency task (46.4 words compared with 38.7 words) and the letter fluency task (40.1 words compared with 32.7 words). ?It was surprising to see that the patients performed at a higher level than the control group, but showed reduced brain activation in their fMRI results,? said princip...
states appear to be in recession as deficits grow
2008-04-25 19:50:00
The weakening economy in some states is hitting tax revenue in a number of ways: People’s discretionary income is being gobbled up by higher food and fuel costs, while the tanking housing market means people are spending less on furniture and appliances associated with buying a house. (more…)
Twin Deficits, Twice The Pain
2008-04-10 22:47:00
It was all bad news today with the release of the latest data on the ?twin deficits?— the U.S. budget and trade deficits. The Associated Press reported Thursday that the federal deficit through the first half of the budget year is at an all-time high. The U.S. Treasury Department said Thursday that the ...

Citing the latest Congressional Budget Office deficit report, Senator Chuck Grassley has argued that the Bush tax cuts have not eaten into the revenue base and are not the cause of rising deficits.Grassley, Chairmand of the Senate Finance Committee, said that the revenue baseline for financial years 2006 to 2010 will average 18.3% of the Gross Domestic Product. This would be a post-World War II

Double Digit Deficits
2007-05-23 23:47:00
In the service of researching my piece for today’s New York Sun, I took our researcher William Burke to the warning track trying to find out the earliest a team has ever fallen at least 10 games behind in the standings and still made the playoffs. The data didn’t make it into the article, but it should be of interest to anyone following the Yankees, who went into double digit deficit 41 games into the year. Memo to Twins: You Don't Get 12 Game Deficits To Make-Up In The Playoffs
2006-10-04 22:37:00
The 3rd phase of Ragnarok appears to be an insurmountable objective. Little did we know yesterday that Loki is not in fact Frank Thomas, but offensivefutility. It has been a strange couple of days. Jason Bartlett forgot that you run the bases counter-clockwise. Luis Castillo failed to remember that grooved fastballs thrown down the middle of the plate are, in fact, strikes. And finally, Torii Hunter didn't notice that Jason Kendell, if not for Frank Thomas, the slowest player on the A's roster, probably doesn't even make 3rd on a single. The whole mess is quite the Rubik's Kubel. Really, Hunter's face flop is a microcosm of how this series is playing out for the team at large. As is proscribed in Ragnarok, the final devastation entails a glorious and earth shaking slaughter of the Gods. What seems, however, to be occuring, is a feeble flutter of called third strikes and slow relays to first on potential double plays. What's lost in this is great starting pitching. The Twins' ...
