Indiana Jones? Crystal Skull May Curb Deforestation, Help With World Peace
2008-05-12 21:37:00
We all know how passionate Harrison Ford is about stopping deforestation in the Amazon, but might he also have found a way to incorporate those values into the latest Indiana Jones movie? If you’re interested in doubling up on that spoonful of conjecture, please, continue reading.  You see, there’s a very interesting article up on MSNBC ...

Making Palm Oils Sustainable
2008-05-07 23:24:00
Palm oil mostly originating from Asia has had its share of controversies connected with the whole eco-friendliness issue today. Apparently, people today look more towards the havoc that it has done rather than what it can do to help make the environment greener. Palm oil has been blamed for deforestation and for driving species such ...
On Dove, palm oil, deforestation and global warming
2008-04-24 18:45:00
Greenpeace have launched a campaign this week to stop Dove - and its maker, Unilever - from destroying Indonesian rainforests and tropical peatlands for palm oil. The main facts are: Indonesia is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, in large part due to the destruction of its forests at the hands of ...
Harrison Ford Has Chest Waxed To Hightlight Deforestation
2008-04-24 16:56:00
Harrison Ford has sacrificed his chest hair to help “shock” people into going green. The 65-year-old star, who is also Vice-Chairman of Conservation International, underwent the treatment to highlight the devastative impact of deforestation. I guess that’s one way to get the message across! Afterwards, Ford said that he felt rather “naked”. Harrison has worked with ...

Deforestation reaches 56 mln hectares in Indonesia
2008-03-19 11:37:00
llegal logging and land clearance have damaged 56 million hectares of Indonesian forests and it takes 56 years to rehabilitate them, an official said Wednesday. "If the replanting grows at the rate of 1 million hectares a year, we need 56 years to save all the damaged forests," Forestry Minister Malam Sabat Kaban was quoted by the national Antara news agency as saying. He claimed that over the last four years, the replanting program has saved 3 million hectares of forest. "Previously, the destruction affected 59 million hectares of the country's total 120 million hectares of forest. The damaged forest has been reduced to 56 million hectares," he said during a visit to the southern Java town of Yogyakarta.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Amazon Deforestation Soars
2008-01-24 20:16:00
This is very sad: Deforestation Soars in the Amazon I really hate being right about this sort of thing because the impacts are so stupendously bad. The monthly rate of deforestation saw a big rise from 243 sq km (94 sq miles) in August to 948 sq km (366 sq miles) in December. 390%??? Puts a whole ...

Timberlords and the Deforestation of Afghanistan
2008-01-05 05:13:00
January 5, 2008. It’s an understatement to say that Afghanistan has more than a few problems. If the security, governance and drug problems disappeared overnight there would obviously remain many difficult issues. One of the problems that has received very little attention is environmental issues. Pollution, overpopulation, depleted resources, health issues, lack of clean water, overgrazing and deforestation are usually put forward as the most pressing of these issues. In order not to overwhelm myself trying to fit all this issues into one entry I will focus only on deforestation, especially in the east. Pic: Deforestation in Nangarhar, Kunar and Nuristan provinces between 1977 and 2002. The dark green signifies land with over 40% tree cover. The 2002 UNEP analysis found that: Nangarhar province has been the hardest hit, with a 71 per cent decrease in forest cover. Meanwhile, forest cover in Nuristan has decreased by 53 per cent, and Kunar by 29 per cent. Residents predict simi...

Climate Delegates in Bali Weaken Draft Deforestation Proposal
2007-12-11 09:02:00
Climate change treaty negotiators weakened a draft proposal to reward developing nations for preserving forests as the U.S. and Brazil oppose such measures. An initial plan from Papua New Guinea called for tropical rainforest countries to get credit for emission reductions made from 2008 to 2012, according to documents handed to delegates at United Nations-sponsored talks in Indonesia. The cuts would be linked to future global climate accords, giving the nations greater access to an emissions trading market now valued at more than $30 billion. Emissions markets don't yet include rewards for countries that avoid cutting down trees. A later UN draft crafted by negotiators meeting on the Indonesian island of Bali removed language suggesting that avoided deforestation from 2008 to 2012 could be swapped later for tradable credits. The Bush administration, which opposes the use of carbon markets, argues that all options shoul...
Using Islam To Combat Indonesian Deforestation
2007-11-20 01:03:00
The Indonesian archipelago contains about 10% of the world?s tropical rainforest, which plays a critical role in regional watershed protection as well as in global efforts to conserve biodiversity and to sequester carbon. However, Indonesia currently experiences one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world. Indonesia also supports the world?s largest population of Muslims, whose religion has a strong influence on their daily life. To combat deforestation, a new project led by Stuart Harrop and Matthew Linkie from the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) at the University of Kent is aiming to improve conservation by raising awareness of Islamic teachings about conservation. The project also aims to improve local livelihoods through sustainable natural resource use in forest-edge communities and to develop an innovative model for Indonesian community-based conservation. Islamic philosophies underpin biodiversity conservation in a number of ways principally...

Are Forest Fires Too Hot To Handle?
2007-09-20 02:31:00
Among the notable calamities we see today are that of forest fires which have been headlining the news. A lot of them have originated from regions such as California and Algeria. One has to wonder what ignited all of these. Was it man or nature? For one thing, the heat wave and the drought of rains ...

Climate Change In Line with Extinction
2007-07-20 20:17:00
A lot of the attention has been on the erring weather and the changing climates. Indonesia Wants Deforestation in New Climate Deal
2007-07-02 02:33:00
Indonesia is pushing to include deforestation in any agreement on combatting global warming during December's UN-led climate talks in Bali, the environment minister said on Friday. The conference on the resort island is expected to initiate talks on clinching a new deal by 2009 to fight global warming. The existing pact, the Kyoto Protocol, runs out in 2012.Under Kyoto, about 35 rich nations are obliged to cut emissions by 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-12.It allows developed nations to pay poor countries to cut emissions from activities such as the manufacture of refrigerants and fertilisers as well as capturing greenhouse gases from farm waste and rubbish dumps. But paying countries to avoid deforestation is not yet eligible.Including deforestation in climate policy would put a price on carbon emissions from forest areas and allow big polluters, such as power companies and cement makers, to buy permits to produce greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2)."It (reduced em...

Deforestation must stop
2007-05-22 22:13:00
The rapid deforestation of the tropical forests is second only to the energy sector as a source of greenhouses gases. One day?s deforestation produces as much in greenhouse gas emissions as eight million people flying from London to New York. Read more in a new report from Global Canopy Programme, an alliance of leading rainforest scientists.
Deforestation: The Hidden Cause Of Global Warming
2007-05-15 21:11:00
Another of the more devastating forces behind deforestation is cattle grazing. With the international growth of fast food chains this seems to be an evident factor in the clearing of trees today. Large corporations looking to buy beef for hamburger and even pet food seek cheap prices and are finding them with the growth of cattle grazing (Heller 3). In the Amazon region of South America alone there are 100,000 beef ranchers (Heller 3). As the burger giants of industrialized society are making high demands for more beef, more forests are being torn down.---From The Choice: Doomsday or Arbor DayArticle by Daniel Howden14 May, 2007The IndependentThe accelerating destruction of the rainforests that form a precious cooling band around the Earth's equator, is now being recognised as one of the main causes of climate change. Carbon emissions from deforestation far outstrip damage caused by planes and automobiles and factories. The rampant slashing and burning of tropical forests is second ...

This story is quite enlightening. Guiness Book of record for Indonesia deforestation speed
2007-05-03 13:37:00
Indonesia had the fastest pace of deforestation in the world between 2000-2005, with an area of forest equivalent to 300 soccer pitches destroyed every hour, Greenpeace said on Thursday. "The next generation of Indonesians will not see any forest if no action is taken by the government to deal with the problem," Greenpeace Indonesia forest campaigner Bustar Maitar told a news conference. The Guinness World Records had approved a proposal by Greenpeace that Indonesia's forest destruction be included in its 2008 record book to be published in September this year, said Greenpeace Southeast Asia campaigner Hapsoro. Indonesia has lost 72 percent of its intact ancient forests and half of what remains is threatened by commercial logging, forest fires and clearances for palm oil plantations, Greenpeace said.
Morocco: Struggling to fight deforestation

Morocco: Struggling to fight deforestation 2007-03-29 Human activities are largely responsible for a loss of forest cover in Morocco. The government is taking steps to combat deforestation, but more remains to be done. In recent years ecologists and officials have raised the alarm that without sufficient awareness campaigns and government action, Morocco may lose its forests. http://www.magharebia.com/cocoo-n/awi/xhtml1/en_GB/features/awi-/features/2007/03/25/feature-02-
USA: Deforestation may add to climate changes
2007-04-10 05:17:00
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID The effect of deforestation on climate depends on three things — location, location and location. Environmentalists concerned about global warming have long encouraged preservation of forests because they absorb carbon dioxide, the most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. But the issue, like most things, may be more complicated than it first appears. New research
