Defragmentation Rant
2007-11-02 04:07:00 While others are luxuriating in some idyllic beach-resort-spa place this long weekend, I'm currently defragmenting files in my laptop using Windows' default Disk Defragmenter program, which, I believe, is powered by crippled nano turtles and, at the rate at it's going, will approximately take three to twenty generations to finish.Sigh. Wake me up when the defragmentation is finally completed. By that time, I'll probably have Alzheimer's, silver pubes, and wet stool in my adult diaper. Until then.

23 Ways To Speed Windows XP, Not Only by Defragmenting
2007-10-31 09:36:00 Since defragmenting the disk won't do much to improve Windows XP performance, here are 23 suggestions that will. Each can enhance the performance and reliability of your customers' PCs. Best of all, most of them will cost you nothing. To decrease a system's boot time and increase system performance, use the money you save by not buying defragmentation software -- the built-in Windows defragmenter works just fine -- and instead equip the computer with an Ultra-133 or Serial ATA hard drive with 8-MB cache buffer. If a PC has less than 512 MB of RAM, add more memory. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade that can dramatically improve system performance.Ensure that Windows XP is utilizing the NTFS file system. If you're not sure, here's how to check: First, double-click the My Computer icon, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Next, examine the File System type; if it says FAT32, then back-up any important data. Next, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and...

Defragmenting in Apple OS X - Don't Do It
2007-10-20 17:55:00 Defragmenting is just part of the Windows landscape. We've been doing it since...I dunno...Bill Gates hit puberty (Really?? he did?). Its just a habit, a way of life. Old habits die hard, even when users switch from a Windows OS to a new OS like Mac OS.So, many users who have switched from PC's to Macs think that disk fragmentation is a concern in OS X, a problem that needs fixing. Truth is, except in very limited circumstances, its not a problem. In fact defragmenting an OS X disk can cause more harm than good. Fragmentation often creates a problem when small additions are saved onto files and overtime these little files end up spread all over the disk, slowing the machine down. However, innovations in software and hard drive technology (capacity, cache size, read speeds) allow many modern applications to rewrite the revised file in its entirety rather than saving all of the little attachments off in the recesses of the disk. Further, in recent OS X versions (10.2 and especially ...

Ja fängt ja gut an. Also nun das gleiche unter Linux, denn lesen kann es ja die Dateien von der NFTS-Platte. Hier klappt es ohne weiteres die D...

Simple ways to increase your computer's performace - Defragmenting your har
2007-03-17 03:35:00 Continuing on with the simple ways to speed up your computer, the next item has been around for a long time, but it's value is still very clear. Defragging your hard drive every once in a while is very important because over time as your computer reads and writes small and large files, the files may end up being written onto non-consecutive parts of the disk. You may have noticed that when you first buy your computer, it runs very smoothly and quickly. But over time, after you install and uninstall applications, download music, delete videos, etc, the computer begins to lag behind and becomes slow. This is because when the disk is initially empty, any new data put on it is written in a single contiguous block. So when the operating system has to read the data, it can find it all in one place. Eventually though, you uninstall an application or delete some music files and those empty areas are now in between other pieces of data. When something new is written to the disk, it fills up ...

Defragmenting Your Computer
2007-03-04 20:39:00 Keep your Computer running smooth.Defragmenting will likely speed up your PC if you haven't defragmented your Computer in the last month you should.Defragmenting your pc is a very simple process, but it is a time consuming process for the computer. So the best time to defrag your computer is when you won't need to use it for an hour or so.The length of time it will take to defragment your computer depends on many factors like computer speed and hard drive speed. The defragement program is under..."Start-->Programs-->Acc-essories-->System Tools-->Disk Defragmenter"Once the process starts you can walk away. There is one requirement to defragment your Computer and that is having enough room on your computer so the defragment process can move files around. If you get the error that your computer does not have enough space you will need to clean-up your hard drive of files you don't need. Why does defragmenting your computer speed it up?Your hard drive where all your files are stored (unti...

Why Defragment A Hard Drive
2006-12-06 04:05:20 A proverbial question on the minds of many is: "Why should I defragment my hard drive?"Well, the answer is quite simple. Have you ever noticed over time that as you add and remove programs and files your computer seems to get slower and slower and slower. This is due to the fact that not all parts of a program or file are necessarily stored sequentially on the hard drive. This means that in order for a program to completely execute after being started, the different pieces of the file have to be located by the OS and then piecened together. This takes time and will cause the computer to run slower. In addition, when files are added and deleted constantly, new files are not particularly written onto the space of the old files. This causes gaps to exist between files. What this is saying is that your files are fragmented, i.e. in pieces all over the place. When you run a defragmentation tool on your hard drive, it normally shows you in percentage form how fragmented your hard drive is,... |
