Hillary Clinton Makes Gracious Exit From Campaign, Endorses Obama
2008-06-08 07:09:00
On Saturday afternoon, Senator Hillary Clinton gave what had to be the most difficult speech of her career. Clinton?s speech before thousands of people packed into the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, marked the official end of her campaign. Clinton announced that she would be suspending her campaign and pledging her full support to Senator Barack Obama. After 16 months of hard fought campaigning, Clinton told the crowd at the beginning of her speech, ?This isn't exactly the party I'd planned.? Clinton found a message in Saturday?s speech that may have helped her earlier in the campaign. Clinton spoke of the glass ceiling that her 18 million supporters helped to chip away at and said she will keep fighting for them. Clinton said, ?[today] the 50th woman to leave this Earth is orbiting overhead. If we can blast 50 women into space, we will someday launch a woman into the White House.? ?Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, har...

Obama and Clinton Meet in DC; Clinton Urges Supporters to Back Obama
2008-06-06 06:49:00
Senator Barack Obama delayed his flight to Chicago on Thursday, so that he could meet privately with Senator Clinton in Washington, DC. On Wednesday, Senator Clinton met with members of the Democratic Party about what to do now that the contests have finished. Fellow Democrats urged Senator Clinton to end her pursuit of the nomination and back Obama. Clinton will make a formal speech on Saturday, in which she will announce her support for Obama and host a party for her campaign support team. Rumors abound as to how Obama and fellow Democrats will face the pressure to give Hillary Clinton the vice presidential nomination. Many supporters and even many in Washington feel that Clinton deserves to have the spot. Senator Clinton has told the public that she is interested in the number 2 spot on the ticket but has told supporters not to intervene and urge Obama to pick her. "While Senator Clinton has made clear throughout this process that she will do whatever sh...

A Compromise Over Michigan Delegates?
2008-06-01 01:54:00
The Democratic Party approved a compromise over the Michigan delegates, granting Senator Clinton 34.5 delegates and Senator Obama 29.5. Although, based on the ratio of votes, it appears to be a fair split based on the primary votes Clinton actually won, but the Michigan Democratic Committee took it one step further using the result of ...

Fear and Courage in the Democratic Party
2008-05-14 16:23:00
If you want to understand why Democrats often pursue a timid, fear-based strategy in their attempts to get elected, Glenn Hurowitz’ Fear and Courage in the Democratic Party is an excellent starting point. From the formation of the Democratic Leadership Council to the early months of the 2008 Democratic Presidential primary season, Hurowitz gives a detailed look at the shortcomings of the typical Democratic strategy of playing a game stacked against them, the politics of fear. In the preface, Hurowitz explains the frustrations he encountered while working for various state and national environmental organizations. It soon became clear that the main obstacle preventing Democrats from voting their conscience was fear. When Democrats voted against us, it was rare to hear them say they disagreed with us on the merits. Instead, they?d tell us they were afraid: afraid that their constituents wouldn?t support a pro-environment position; afraid of defying President Bush and the Republi...
The Past V. The Future In The Democratic Party
2008-05-09 17:26:00
From dangerously failed policies and brutal incompetence, to an immunity to tell the truth and work in the best interest of their constituents, members of Congress have eliminated the hopes and dreams that so many Americans tirelessly worked for.Unfortunately, the junior Senator from New York, Hillary Clinton, has been encapsulated in the failed policies of Washington as an individual who consistently touts her thirty years of experience (marginal at best), and unquestionably deserves to be labeled as the candidate of the past who's overwhelmingly out of touch with the values, opinions, and interests of everyday people. How can she expect to run a White House when she can't even run her campaign? It's as if a baseball player in Triple AAA continuously batted below .200, but expected to perform exceedingly well once he was promoted to the major leagues. That's not how it works. As the weeks before Mr. Obama is officially nominated, one component is evident. He's the future of the ...

Dreaming of a Clintonless Democratic Party
2008-05-01 00:00:00
Still yet another reason to hope that the Clintons will simply go away: It?s one thing for a good presidential candidate to embrace a bad idea. It?s worse when the candidate knows it?s a bad idea. It?s worse still when the candidate attacks her rival for failing to embrace a bad idea. And it?s the worst when the candidate feels so strongly about the bad idea that she starts running television commercials about it.Of course he's talking about Hillary Clinton and her support of John McCain's incredibly stupid gas tax holiday. Now we know it's stupid because Fred Barnes thinks it's a good idea. It's so stupid that even Thomas Friedman thinks it's stupid and He's rarely right about anything. Jonathan Alter calls it what it is:Political PanderingSuspending the federal gas tax is a crass ploy for votes. Why Hillary Clinton and John McCain should know better.Hillary Clinton has now joined John McCain in proposing the most irresponsible policy idea of the year?an idea that actually c...

Howard Dean to Superdelegates: Make Up Your Mind Now
2008-04-18 07:24:00
Howard Dean spoke with Wolf Blitzer of CNN on Thursday and repeated his call for the remaining undecided superdelegates to make up their mind, starting now. Dean has stated before that he would like the race to be determined before July 1st which would give the nominee nearly two months to prepare for the convention. Dean said there are 35 percent of the remaining superdelegates who have yet to make a decision. ?There?s about 65 percent, roughly, percent of the superdelegates who voted, there?s about 320 some odd left to vote. I need them to say who they are for, starting now. They really do need to do that,? Dean said. Dean explained that the last primary date is on June 3rd and that there is no reason for the Democrats to give up 2 or 3 months of active campaigning due to indecisive superdelegates. Dean did not mince words when it came to making a decision if you are a superdelegate. Dean wants decisions to be made now or at least by June 3rd when the p...
Must we destroy the Democratic Party in order to save it?
2008-04-16 19:42:00
If Hillary wins the nomination, I ain't voting for her. That doesn't mean I'll vote for McCain, either. (I'm may be mad as hell, but I'm not crazy.) But if the Clintons manage to swindle the nomination away from Obama with their Nixonian "Bittergate" bullshit dirty campaigning, then I am staying home on election day. Or maybe I'll vote for Obama as a write-in candidate. But it was not always thus. Waaaay back, when it seemed like Hillary's nomination was a foregone conclusion, I was glad. Not only was Bush making the Clinton years look like a golden age, but I also thought, "At least the Democrats will finally run someone who knows how to win an election." After the disaster that was the John Kerry campaign, I'm sure a lot of progressives felt that way. But those feelings were misplaced. After all, the pathetic establishment Democrats who've lost the ability to connect with America — not just frontmen like Kerry but also insiders like campaign man...

We, the People of the Democratic Party, Part 3
2008-04-01 04:31:00
It’s A Landslide Victory     for the People  By Hank Edson After the worst presidency in history, during most of which the Republican Party controlled all three branches of government, we, the people of the Democratic Party are going to win a landslide victory in November over John McCain and the Republican Party. We need to begin every thought with this sentence. We need to test every opinion we hear against this sentence too. We need to use the heft of our conviction on this point in responding to the voices that thrive on confusion. The corporate media has two agendas. One is ratings. The other is aiding corporate control of the American people’s government. Both agendas are served by projecting a “tight” race for the presidency. We’ve got to be more sophisticated if we, the people of the Democratic Party, really want control of our government. We have to know our truth and their lies. Even when appropriately an...
We, the People of the Democratic Party, Part 2
2008-03-28 02:35:00
Hillary Clinton's Big State Lie    &nbs-p;  By Hank Edson No matter who the Democratic Party nominates, that candidate ought to win hands down--following as he or she will, the worst administration in history, during which the Republican Party controlled all three branches of government. That's why diverting the political discourse into considering any other alternative is to put oneself at odds with the interests of the Democratic Party. We, the people of the Democratic Party, already have a resounding victory.  Don't tell us our victory is at risk; it is not.  Don't tell us you will save us; we don't need to be saved. We don’t need a candidate selection process, in fact; anyone will do. Make no mistake about this. The fact that we would like a genuine leader does not mean that we are in doubt about our victory over the abusive politics of Republican rule.  It does not mean that we are for an answer to our fears.  We are not afr...
Democratic Party Official: Clinton Pursuing ‘The Tonya Harding Option’
2008-03-26 12:30:00
ABC’s Jen Parker at Political Punch: l just spoke with a Democratic Party official, who asked for anonymity so as to speak candidly, who said we in the media are all missing the point of this Democratic fight. The delegate math is difficult for Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, the official said. But it’s not a question of CAN she achieve it. Of course she can, the official said. The question is — what will Clinton have to do in order to achieve it? Look, we know Clinton is willing to play political hardball, here, and has a scorched earth policy that would make Stalin himself blanch. We know all of that. But what is this noise I’m hearing form Howard Dean by way of Harry Reid, suggesting that Clinton will be well out of the way by the convention? “It will happen” Reid is reported as saying.  No links, yet, but when I get em, you will. Addendum:  (David L) Chris Matthews asserts that  the Cllintons would rather John McCain be the next president rathe...

We, the People of the Democratic Party, Part 1
2008-03-26 06:18:00
John Edwards, Where Are You Now?      By Hank Edson As the number of Americans killed in President Bush’s deceitful war surpasses 4000, this shameful milestone ought to be the Democratic Party’s bully pulpit for a saner, safer, more humane government. On one hand, it ought to be a bully pulpit that speaks for itself. The leadership of the Democratic Party ought to circle the American people around it for a moment of profound and deliberative silence. On the other hand, it ought to be a bully pulpit from which the tragic aftermath of Republican rule of all three branches of government during the majority of Bush’s administration is reviewed with eloquent and angry common sense. One thing is sure, with 4000 Americans killed by the Republican management of foreign policy, the general election should already be won by the Democratic Party. John McCain’s showing in the polls should be as low as George Bush and Dick Cheney’s approval ratin...

Senator Clinton And The Democratic Party, Where Now?
2008-03-16 22:29:00
***Crossposted from Chuck for... This article has now had three days of play on Reuters through Blogburst/ so I'm not stepping on them posting it here now.***Before the Texas and Ohio Primaries I stated that without a convincing win in one or both states Hillary should quit. She got that type of win in Ohio, ugly, but she got it. I stated afterwards that she should stay in because there is real value in a contested primary, the voters get a chance to measure judgment and character as well as policies; all the while allowing candidates to grow. A certain nasty undertone had followed the Clinton campaign since South Carolina, it flowered before Texas and Ohio and is now in full bloom. It is the ugliness of political opportunism. I suppose you're ready to read a call for a Clinton withdrawal. You won't get that. I am sincerely disturbed and angered by the recent tacks taken by Hillary. They are an aspect of politics I'd much rather left to the Republicans, who have worked hard for a...
1/3rd of Democrats Racist? Seems They Agree With Geraldine Ferraro
2008-03-16 18:02:00
Ok, kids, here's a question: if we agree that Geraldine Ferraro was expressing racism in her comments regarding Barack Obama, what does it say about those who agree with her? Hmm? Well, logically, it would say that they too have views that are racist. Thus, if a survey shows that 34 percent of Democrats agree with Geraldine Ferraro , then it means that according to this survey we have a party with problems. It means that about 1/3rd of the Democratic Party is racist and in my view, the party could lose part of that one-third to the Republicans and John McCain, unless something is done. Barack Obama has a wide lead in delegates and Clinton will not catch him. Dean needs to end this contest, now. It also means that Dean and Pelosi should worry about causing the Democrats African American base to erode for the first time in history. (As far as Florida and Michigan, just split the delegates 50 - 50 and move on.)I think both Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi need to step in and cor...

Clinton Surrogates Cross the Line Again
2008-03-11 04:26:00
Geraldine Ferraro suggests Obama would not be where he is now if he was not African American.Geraldine Ferraro is a member of Hillary Clinton?s finance committee and a top Clinton fundraiser. I was not surprised to read on the Daily Kos about yet another top Clinton surrogate saying something racist and ignorant about Barack Obama. ?If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept,? Ferraro said. Ferraro, a former Democratic vice presidential candidate has claimed that if Barack Obama were white, he would not be winning this election. I think Barack Obama would like to argue how lucky he is to be African American when he is haling a cab or running for president in a state where the population is more than 90 percent white. Last Saturday, Wyoming overwhelmingly chose Barack Obama as their...

The Democratic Party is Screwed in November
2008-03-06 09:48:00
Up until this point I thought if Barack Obama was the Democratic nominee he would beat John McCain in a landslide in November, and if Hillary Clinton was the Democratic nominee(which I think will happen) McCain wins in a landslide. Now with Hillary back in the race because of winning Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island her supporters are no longer demoralized. I expect Hillary to make a huge push to the Democratic nomination with the power of her many now fully fueled "Hillbots". As many have stated the longer this epic battle goes on the easier the battle will be for John McCain in November. I now think it's reached the point where the Democrats are officially screwed for November even if Obama is the Democratic nominee. Here are the reasons why I think this:The Democratic primary process will have gone on long enough to give McCain the advantage in campaigning. Not to mention the fact that the Republican party is united now, and the Democratic party isn't.Barack Obama and Hillary Cli...
Michigan Democratic Party Says Yes to Election Redo
2008-03-06 01:23:00
Wednesday evening, Democratic officials in Michigan indicated that they were open to a new primary or caucus in order to get their delegates seated at the convention. There was no mention of what kind of election it would be but this time the election would be valid. Howard Dean told National Public Radio this Wednesday afternoon, that a redo of their election would likely be the only way their delegates would be seated. Dean took a hard line with Michigan and Florida saying they broke the rules of the party and they should not get to decide the winner of this nomination. Dean said, a situation where Michigan or Florida got to decide the election based on their previous elections, would divide the party. Over the weekend, Governor Charlie Crist of Florida indicated that he would support a redo of their primary. Howard Dean speculated that redo's of both Michigan and Florida would have to happen sometime in May or June. The Democratic National Convention is not until August and D...
