Bob Barr on the department of education
2008-06-24 14:44:00 Bob Barr on the department of educationJune 24, 2008 12:13 am EST Atlanta, GA -- The federal Department of Education is spending almost $70 billion this year on a function not even mentioned in the Constitution. “The Department should be closed down and the money left with the American people to use for education at the family, local, and state levels,” says Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party presidential nominee. While spending so much money on programs that should not exist, in 2003 the Congress created a small voucher program started for students in Washington, D.C., which has some of the worst schools in the nation. Now the Democratic majority is planning on killing the initiative, putting nearly 2000 students back into the failed public school system. “The only federal education program Congress wants to get rid of is the one doing the most to help poor kids,” observes Barr. But since education is not a federal responsibility, “a better way to promote...

As we approach graduation season, many American students are looking forward to beginning college in the fall. This new chapter of life is a time of great expectation but can also be a time of anxiety. And that anxiety is being heightened by the recent credit crunch, which has raised concerns about the potential availability of student loans.Recently, some lenders have dropped out of the Federal program that provides college loans to students who have often little or no credit. Without an adequate response, this means that many students may approach the upcomin...

Department of Education Fails Math (& Common Sense)
2007-12-02 00:00:00 I may have thrown out the baby with the bath water, so to speak, in ?The Teachers? Unholy Union.? I wrote that the Department of Education whipped out a bunch of figures to placate parents about their kids? education, and joked that I couldn?t read them anyway, since I?m a product of the NYC public school system.

New Book Warns of Emerging Liberal Nanny State . . .
2007-07-16 16:11:00 Given the Libertarian slant of this web page, I think it most appropriate to push a book that discusses certain elements of this country and their attempts at eradicating personal responsibility and instituting a nanny state. David Harsanyi is releasing a new book called ?Nanny State: How Food Fascists, Teetotalling Do Gooders, Priggish Moralists, and Other Boneheaded bureaucrats are Turning America into a Nation of Children.?Harsaanyi describes the book in this following message:?Nanny State details the rise of the busybody -? those who act as our parents, making decisions for us in the name of health, safety and decency. Nanny State asks: Why are we allowing politicians, bureaucrats, and social activists to dictate what we eat, where we smoke, how much we drink or what we watch and read? The book argues that allowing government intervention in its citizens' private lives not only denies us freedom of choice, but also erodes our national character by promoting a culture of victimh...
Cheerleader Sues School for Being Cut From Team
2007-07-11 23:54:00 For quite some time, I have wanted to discuss how liberalism is destroying the competitive spirit of our Nation?s children. This is the same competitive drive that made our Country great and so admired throughout the world. I briefly touched on this insanity recently regarding Seattle Schools banning Legos. But, after watching Glenn Beck last night, I knew it was time to unleash my rage. Glenn Beck last night spoke with an attorney for Wycoda Fischer. Evidently, Fischer had a dire crisis that required legal counsel. You see, poor Wycoda Fischer did not make her cheerleading team. No, you are not dreaming; this is not a joke. Wycoda Fischer did not make her junior varsity cheerleading team and so she is suing her school. Forget the fact that Michael Jordan attributes his competitive drive, and ultimate success, because he was cut from his high school team. Today, instead of children learning from their failures, and striving to succeed, they are rewarded for their lack ...
The Department of Education and Undersecretary Franklin Sunga are Recipient
2007-07-11 02:50:00 Da Daily DonkeyDa Daily Donkey Award goes to the Philippines' Department of Education (DepEd), which approved error-filled textbooks used in our country's public elementary schools, and to its Undersecretary Franklin Sunga, who sought to downplay the errors uncovered by academician Antonio Calipjo Go. Mr. Go had a full-page ad in the Inquirer's Monday issue listing down the hundreds of errors he found in English and Filipino textbooks. From Inquirer.net:"Those are alleged errors,'' DepEd Undersecretary Franklin Sunga said in reaction to the full-page ad put out by Go in The Inquirer's Monday issue listing down the hundreds of errors he found in English and Pilipino textbooks.A-Kid: Common sense is not so common after all. Mr. Sunga, an academician such as Antonio Calipjo Go wouldn't put himself out in the open for libel suits (and via a full-page ad in one of the country's popular newspapers) if he didn't know what he was talking about.Sunga said that he did not find the ter...
The Department of Education: Destroying the Education System $67.2 Billion
2007-07-08 00:11:00 Conservatives have not been sufficient when conveying the need to get rid of the Department of Education. Instead of articulating why the Department of Education is destroying the education system in this Country, they manage to convince ignorant Americans that they are against education itself. This bureaucratic labyrinth known as the Department of Education has demonstrated that it serves only one purpose: To unnecessarily grow the size of government. If, hypothetically, the average taxpayer were to pay $1000 of his or her tax dollars toward education, here is a picture of what happens to that money. First, the money goes straight to Washington, D.C. Even if the taxpayer lives in Chicago, which is nowhere near Washington, it is totally irrelevant. Then the government workers take a huge cut, create an unworkable plan to fix problems they created, and send the money around the country. The money may never go back to the taxpayer?s district, a mere technicality. Subseque...

Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus - Da Dailiy Donkey
2007-06-04 09:18:00 Da Daily Donkey award goes to Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus, who claimed that there were no shortages on the first day of school. So what the hell is this, Sec. Lapus? - click here - Just an interesting read?Up to 100 students had to cram into one classroom in an elementary school in Quezon City;dzEC radio reported that the Batasan Hills Elementary School had an average of 85 students per classroom, way over the 45 students-per-classroom ratio set by DepEd;a section in the Grade II classes even had as many as 100 students crammed into it, according to the dzEC report;classes had to be broken up into three shifts just to accommodate the students, most of whom came from poor families in the area;aside from the shortage in classrooms, up to six students had to share one textbook in the school (DepEd had claimed it is working on a ratio of one student per textbook).Lapus, you might as well quit. Claiming something that isn't true is covering up one's shortcomings. There...

The Secret To US Department of Education Loans
2007-05-14 10:05:00 If you have heard about any kind of Federal financial aid for students, you are already familiar with US Department of Education loans. The US Department of Education handles all government aid for defraying the cost of attending college in America, from grants to loans. The first thing that you will need to do to apply for US Department of Education loans is to fill out a FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. FAFSA forms compare the amount of money required to attend a specific college to the amount of money that can be expected to be paid by the family of the attendee. Any difference is the amount of money eligible for student aid.Qualifying for US Department of Education LoansUS Department of Education loans have specific qualifications that an applicant must meet to be eligible. The qualifications include US Citizenship (some non-citizens with social security numbers are also eligible), financial need, possession of a valid Social Security Number, and proof of...

US Department of Education Grants: Alphabet Soup
2007-01-11 05:31:00 How great would it be to have someone else pay for you to attend college? That's the idea behind grants, which do not have to be paid back. Let's take a look at where we can find this sort of financial aid. Not surprisingly, the U.S. Department of Education is a major source of grants available currently to citizens and eligible non-citizens. Typically, these grants are intended to help low and modest income families. However, it is appropriate that everyone be aware of them since families with more than one child in college at the same time can also find that the eligibility ceiling rises dramatically. Pell Grants: These are typically awarded to low income families, based on need and not scholarship, and primarily go to students seeking bachelor?s degrees. In some cases, Pell Grants are given to graduate students seeking a career in teaching. Maximum Award: $4,050 for the 2006-07 academic year but this may be increased by the new Congress for 2007-08.
