Utah Department Of Health Adopts Tobacco-Free Campus Policy
2007-07-19 11:24:00 Tobacco-Free Campus PolicyStarting July 1, 2007, anyone visiting or working for the Utah Department of Health will either need to find somewhere else to light up or quit smoking. The UDOH has adopted a tobacco-free policy for its buildings and grounds, and cessation services are offered to those who want to kick the habit.'Going smoke-free is just the right thing to do,' said Dr. David Sundwall, UDOH Executive Director. 'Not only is smoke an irritant for non-smoking staff and patrons, but secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer, heart disease, and illness in children. We couldn't in good conscience allow open smoking on our grounds any longer,' he said. The goal of the tobacco-free policy is to improve the health of UDOH employees and visitors by both reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and promoting quitting. Cutting tobacco use also increases productivity, lowers absenteeism, and reduces medical and other costs associated with tobacco use in the workplace.UDOH buildings have b...

Capability reviews of Department of Health, Department for Transport and Cr
2007-07-10 02:00:00 Poor people management and leadership continue to hinder government departments, the latest round of Whitehall capability reviews has revealed. The Department of Health (DoH), Department for Transport (DfT), and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) were scrutinised by a team of assessors put together by the Cabinet Office. HR performance at the CPS came in for particular criticism, with the report stating there was "a lack of passion for [the] learning and development of all staff and core management capabilities, talent management and succession planning are under-developed". Only 53% of staff at the CPS thought their team was well managed. The assessors said the department lacked a clear, holistic plan for developing its people. The results of the review will come as a major blow to the service and its HR director Ros McCool, who joined in January from the Home Office, replacing Angela O'Connor. However, the review did acknowledge the CPS had made great strides in its...
It's Official: California Department of Health Services Isn't Doing Its Job
2007-04-16 13:55:00 The California State Auditor issued a report today criticizing the California Department of Health Services for its handling of complaint investigations of nursing homes. Department of Health Services (?DHS?) is the state agency that investigates complaints of neglect and abuse on behalf of nursing home residents. The State Auditor criticizing Department of Health Services is like Claude Rains, as Inspector Renault in the movie Casablanca, saying that ?I am shocked, shocked to find out that there is illegal gambling? going on at Rick?s Casino. The problems with Department of Health Services are of long standing, and have been long ignored also.California law requires DHS to investigate complaints involving death, injury, abuse or unsanitary conditions within 24 hours to 10 days, depending on the severity of the complaint. (See Health & Safety Code § 1420(a)(1)). The DHS operating manual says that investigations should be completed within 45 days from the date a complaint is received....
