Deployment Troubles of a 5 year-old
2008-06-03 15:07:00 My five-year old is struggling. He is struggling with his father's deployment. One and a half months down - 10 1/2 to go. This could be a long year. The two of them are close. He loves watching his dad play video games; looks for his dad's face after every soccer goal he makes; helps his dad make an occasional dinner; hangs on every word his father says. When you talk about being a hero, Dad is up there in this little boy's eyes.So I found it quite peculiar a couple of weeks ago when I asked him if he wanted to talk to Dad, I was just finishing up a quick call with him, and he adamantly told me 'No'. Hm... He was mad, I could hear it in his voice. Then what broke my heart a few days later: "Daddy is going to die." I reassured him that Dad was not going to die. (Please, dear Lord, do not make me a liar!) I pulled him up onto my lap and gave him a big long hug. I asked him why he thought this and he replied, "There are so many bad guys out there." Oh more long hugs as tears welle...

Deployment
2008-05-03 02:10:00 I rented an apartment to a single Military man. He has married since he moved in. He is being deployed for 7 months and his new bride is going back to her parents for that period of time. She wanted to know if they had to pay rent while no one was living in the apt. I told her "Yes" since all their belongings will remain there and I certainly could not rent it out for those seven months. She said that she thought Military personnel at least had their rent cut while they were gone. I have never had this occur before. Should I reduce the rent while no one is living there? If so, how much? It rents for $700 a mo.It is a month to month.

Microsoft takes steps to ?Integrate IT? at the Microsoft Management Summit
2008-04-30 17:26:00 I'm relaying the following article on behalf of my colleague Shanen Boettcher, General Manager of Windows Product Management for the enterprise. During Virtualization Briefing Day in January, Shanen posted to give you background on what we're doing to make it simpler and easier to introduce and get the most out of virtualization of Windows in enterprise environments. He's back again today with an update on virtualization, as well as other components that illustrate our commitment to improving the optimized desktop. This week at the Microsoft Management Summit (MMS) in Las Vegas, we've talked about Microsoft's role in improving the optimized desktop and emphasized Microsoft's commitment to virtualization. I want to tell you about some news coming out of the show today, which includes details on the product roadmaps for specific tools within the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) for Software Assurance. Question: How do I deal with no sleep and this deployment?
2008-04-28 15:54:00 I can relate to this question that recently arrived in my inbox. How in the world do I get some sleep? My husband has been deployed for only four months and I don't know how many more months of "no sleep" I can take! I think all night and worry all night and I just can't get any rest. How do I get to sleep and stay asleep? My job and my life is starting to suffer. Please help me.Boy, can I relate. I am the world's worst worry wart. I admit that I've even woken up at night in a panic before in the past...it happens to just about all of us. But one thing we can do is prepare ourselves mentally for our brain wanting to continue to spin at high speed. Research shows that we DO need sleep to function properly and to be in our right mind. Here's how to get a good night's rest and to keep those worries from eating at your health and well being. My mind always works full speed...right after I turn out the light. It's as if another switch has been turned on inside my head. I...

Intel to spend $500 million on Wimax deployment ….. in Taiwan
2008-04-21 15:00:00 Channeling Intel: Dear Americans, we conceived and largely developed Wimax here, and believe that there is a ready market. While the builders of the first nationwide Wimax networks are strapped for cash and looking for investors we are handing Tiawan a load of cash to build out there instead. INTEL ANNOUNCED bright and early on Monday morning that theyll be chucking $500 million Taiwans way, spread out over the next half a decade to develop the Islands WiMax infrastructure. The agreement will also apparently try to promote a greater level of WiMax congruency among gear developers. (The Inquirer) Unfortunately for Americans, the developers of Laptops and other portable technology are in Taiwan, so they get first dibbs. It makes sense when you consider there is nary a single PC manufacturer in the LTE camp today and Wimax has a time to market advantage over competing technologies. Could it also be that Intel would rather not do battle with the US telcos who now have a lock on the maj...

Deployment gets easier with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008
2008-03-20 18:18:00 We've reached a pivotal moment in time, the release to Web of Windows Vista SP1 on Tuesday and, to complete the picture, today we released Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2008, the latest generation of the Microsoft Solution Accelerators designed to simplify and ease your deployment experience. There are a lot of things to consider when deploying a new OS and, if your organization has 50 desktops or more, MDT is designed to help you navigate the potentially complex desktop environment. Our goal is to save you lots of time and effort in planning and building out a standard desktop experience all the way to rolling OS images out into production. Don't worry, this is not something unproven and new -- just fewer than 1 million of you across industries have been active users of MDT's predecessor, Business Desktop Deployment (BDD). Past customers include companies like Unilever, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications and Fred Weber, who reduced their deployment costs from $300 to $35 ...

When I return from a deployment or long TDY
2008-02-15 17:10:00 The title of this blog could be: My respect for the military spouse! I faced many long TDYs, lengthy separations and one deployment as a unit during my 30 years on active duty so I thought maybe I could share my personal feelings about coming home! In one case I had been assigned to an overseas base that was supposed to be a sponsored tour with my family but there was no housing available for 6 months. I had been TDY for 4 months prior to moving overseas while doing some training. So when my family joined me it had been almost a ten month separation. Over the length of my career I was gone approximately 5 years! Try explaining that to a civilian as a job requirement! I know that my away time does not compare to most of you reading this. The current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have service members deploying 3 times within 5 years! There is a different way to look at me being gone: my lovely bride took care of our kids (including the delivery of our middle child), the ca...

Army deployment possible for Feb.18 polls: Pak CEC
2008-02-03 12:33:00 Pakistan's Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retired) Qazi Mohammad Farooq has said that the army would be deployed at the most sensitive polling stations before and during the February 18 general elections if the Election Commission of Pakistan felt that paramilitary forces were unable to maintain law and order. Talking to journalists here on Saturday after an orientation workshop, jointly organized by the Election Commission and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for district returning officers (DROs), Justice (Retired) Farooq expressed hope about provincial governments maintaining law and order. The Daily Times, however, quoted him as saying that the Election Commission has asked for a list of the most sensitive polling stations and would decide to deploy the army if it felt it to be necessary. The CEC said that holding peaceful, free and fair elections was the responsibility of the commission, and it has made all the needed arrangements. He disagreed with the no...

DVB-T Taiwan deployment
2008-01-23 18:41:00 More than 2 million 6MHz DVB-T receivers with NTSC output now deployed in Taiwan 12 December 2007The most recent figures from the Taiwan DTV Committee indicate that sales of DVB-T receivers have now passed the 2 million mark in that country. Whilst this reflects the success of DVB-T deployments around the world, Taiwan is particularly significant for having chosen to adopt the DVB-T system for digital terrestrial television in an environment where the NTSC system is used for analogue television, with 6MHz channel bandwidths.More than 50 million DVB-T receivers have now been deployed around the world. It is common for proponents of competing systems to argue that DVB-T is only deployed in in 8MHz countries. However, DVB is proud to publicly state that DVB-T was, from the start, designed to operate equally well in 6, 7 and 8MHz environments and is deployed in countries with all three variations.Services were launched in Taiwan with Single Frequency Networks.
