My Vlog On Friends, Race, Depression, and Consideration
2008-06-30 04:33:00 I created this "vlog" (video-blog) to deal with and talk about a problem I've had with certain friends.Perhaps you've had the same problem where some of your, in my case, friends who are White (or the reverse or generally interracial) don't give you proper "consideration" in your friendship, where consideration is a kind of contract that all friendships have -- a contract of basic expectations of treatment. In other words, while you call them, they don't call you, or if you are dealing with someone who's racist, they tell you that you "see racism" rather than coming to your aide.Or they are your friends as long as they're able to take advantage of you or get information from you, but when they get around their friends, you suddenly don't exist.I'd like to know your response to my video and your view.Thanks.

Why Attraction to Guys in Bands, Jealous Girlfriends, Sometimes a Guy is Ju
2008-06-09 19:11:00 What I have learned this weekend is love sometimes is not enough. Having chemistry is just chemistry. Sometimes an inner connection with someone is just a connection that is it. Sometimes music is just music and sometimes a song is just a song. Sometimes a guy is just a guy in a band who knows how to sing better than others. A sign for me to notice this guy in the band is just a sign. I don?t know why there is such an attraction to them maybe it is because everyone else wants them too it is a competition thing. I see how woman can fall for guys in bands. I try not to get caught up in the attraction of that but try to see special things in people. I think I just saw something special this young guy in a band in a way saw more in him that just a guy in band. I saw such a talent that deserves to be discovered. I realize after the weekend his new girlfriend told me stop talking to him. Then told me stop going to gigs, I don?t want to cause any problems with anyone. I didn?t even know I...

Latest Bank Actions Draw Comparisons To 1929 Crash
2008-06-06 02:38:00 With all the upheaval in the global economy lately, comparisons were bound to be made with another era symbolic of financial hardship. Last weekend, Philip Aldrick of the Telegraph (UK) wrote: Perhaps the most intriguing parallel, though, is the crude attempt at self-preservation made by the investment trusts in 1929 and the banks now. US: House Prices Falling At A Greater Pace Then The Great Depression
2008-06-05 19:09:00 The house prices, in the US are falling at a great pace. The latest S&P/Case-Shiller national house-price index, published this week, showed a slump of 14.1% in the year to the first quarter, the worst since the index began 20 years ago. Robert Shiller, the co-inventor of the index has created a version of index that stretches back over a century. According to this version of index, the downfall in the real estate market, in the US, is already bigger than the lowest point of deflationary in 1932 where it was at 10.5%.The downfall, at such a steep rate, in the real estate market is on one side a welcome scenario for people in the US, because it would now be easy to own a house but on the other side it may not be a very healthy sign for the US economy.
Treat Depression by Growing New Brain Cells
2008-06-05 16:37:00 The Booster Shots blog at the Los Angeles Times reports that a company called BrainCells, Inc., has begun phase two testing of a compound to treat depression and anxiety. Nothing new so far, but BrainCells plans to treat these diseases by promoting neurogenesis—the growth of new neurons—in the brain. Company co-founder Fred Gage rocked the scientific world about ten years ago with a paper showing that adult brain cells could regenerate over time. While those findings are fully accepted these days, some researchers are skeptical that neurogenesis will work as a treatment for depression. Whether it works for depression or not, this is a valuable area of research that could be use to treat a number of brain and nervous-system conditions.

Should depression patients use atypical antipsychotic drugs for treatment-
2008-05-30 03:30:00 The answer to this question comes from the scientific and psychiatric communities via the results from clinical trials. More recently, 2 positive, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials investigating the use of adjunctive aripiprazole ( Abilify) in Major Depressive Disorder were published. In the first such study, focused on the use of aripiprazole augmentation for patients resistant ( did not respond) to up to 1-3 retrospective" (historical) antidepressant trials. Patients who made insufficient symptom improvement had either aripiprazole or placebo added to their SSRI or SNRI regimen for a total of 6 weeks. A statistically significant difference in remission rates was also observed, with 26% remission for aripiprazole vs 15% remission for placebo .This study also reported relatively low rates of discontinuation due to intolerance in the 2 treatment groups (2% for aripiprazole and 1.7% for placebo . The results of separate study of identical design recently presented at a ma...
Diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression? New treatments to help you m
2008-05-30 03:10:00 We defined treatment-resistant depression in our May 27th, 2008 post. Now we need to learn about new depression treatments, strategies and coping skills. First of all, new evidence indicates that the typical six week "trial period" of a new antidepressant may not be adequate. Recent clinical trials of longer duration (12 weeks) have provided evidence arguing that 6 weeks may be too short a duration to declare an antidepressant trial ineffective.I can't emphasize enough the importance of patient compliance. 50% of patients do not comply. I know that it is very hard for depression patients to comply, especially if you do not get a positive response. Take your medications exactly as prescribed by your physician. Everyday with no exceptions( unless the side effects, if any, are not tolerable). The management of TRD can involve the use of pharmacologic as well as nonpharmacologic interventions such as the use of cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, elect...

Choosing the right food can affect mood and depression
2008-05-28 18:50:00 How great an impact does diet have on mood? I have always wondered about the link between food and depression. Scientists have now determined that emotions are linked to certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Three neurotransmitters in particular — dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin — have been studied in relation to food, and this research has shown that neurotransmitters are produced in the brain from components of certain foods. With focus on the food-mood connection, researcher Judith Wurtman, former member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology research staff and author of "The Serotonin Power Diet," notes that people are more alert when their brains are producing dopamine and norepinephrine. SEROTONIN-MOOD LINK A calmer effect has been associated with serotonin production. A stable brain serotonin level is associated with a positive mood state. Dr. Wurtman, who also directed the Program in Women's Health at MIT's Clinical Research Center, ...

What is the definition of treatment-resistant depression?
2008-05-27 19:13:00 To answer that question, I have to first define treatment-resistant depression (TRD). This is the Mayo Clinic's definition of TRD:Treatment-resistant depression is generally defined as the continuation of depression symptoms despite treatment with at least three or four different medications. In other words, you and your doctor may have spent months or even years trying to find treatments that result in the remission of your depression symptoms, without success. This kind of chronic depression is not the same as dysthymia. Dysthymia is a less-severe form of depression, and although it's also long-lasting, its symptoms usually aren't disabling or life-altering. What are the causes of treatment-resistant depression? Several factors may cause or contribute to treatment-resistant depression. These include: Depression severity. The more severe your depression initially is and the longer a depression episode lasts, the more likely the depression is to resist improvement with treatme...

What are the causes of depression?; it is in the genes.
2008-05-20 19:06:00 While depression can strike anyone at any time, research has identified several factors associated with an increased risk for depression: Family History—Having an immediate family member with depression increases the risk of developing depression. Other mental illnesses, such as alcoholism in family members, also can increase the risk for depression. Early Childhood Experience—Early childhood trauma, such as loss of a parent before adolescence, child neglect, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, and parental divorce are all linked to increased risk for adult depression. Stress—Negative life events, such as divorce, loss of a loved one or loss of employment are associated with increased depression. Research shows that chronic stresses (such as illness, lack of social support and numerous "daily hassles") also are linked to depression. Alcohol—Depression and alcoholism often is seen in the same patient at the same time. Alcohol is a depressant and its presence ...

Mimoh's launch turned into nightmare, Mithun goes into depression
2008-05-13 21:40:00 The quality and outcome of Mimoh's purported dream launch, Jimmy, has sent shock waves across the industry. While the pre-release vibes from the film were indicative of a hard time ahead not even the shrewdest trade pundit could have predicted such a harsh and relentless attack on a film that clearly and tragically doesn't deliver the goods. While the shell-shocked star-parent Mithun Chakraborty has gone into a shell, sources close to the family say Mithun wasn't quite unprepared for the severe backlash. Economist: U.S. housing slump may exceed Depression
2008-05-10 22:51:00 An influential economist who long predicted the housing market bubble cautioned Tuesday that the slump in the U.S. housing market could cause prices to fall more than they did in the Great Depression and bailouts will be needed so millions don't lose their homes. Yale University economist Robert Shiller, pioneer of the widely watched Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index, said there's a good chance housing prices will fall further than the 30 percent drop in the historic depression of the 1930s. Home prices nationwide already have dropped 15 percent since their peak in 2006, he said. "I think there is a scenario that they could be down substantially more," Shiller said during a speech at the New Haven Lawn Club. Shiller's Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index is considered a strong measure of home prices because it examines price changes of the same property over time, instead of calculating a median price of h...

Ketamine eases depression
2008-05-05 10:23:00 Scientists have unraveled how a horse tranquilizer and hallucinogenic night club drug known as "Special K" can ease depression, researchers said on Friday. — LONDON, May. 2, 2008 (Reuters) Ketamine, which can also cause feelings of detachment, could pave the way for new treatments for people suffering from depression, the researchers added. Their study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, found ketamine restores to normal the orbifrontal cortex, an area of the brain located above the eyes that is overactive in depressed people. The area is believed to be responsible for feelings of guilt, dread, apprehension and physical reactions such as a racing heart, said Bill Deakin, who led the study.
