I'm a manic depressive: Mel Gibson
2008-05-15 15:33:00 Mel Gibson has admitted that he suffers from bipolar disorder in a new documentary. The documentary is about the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) acting class of 1977. The Hollywood star, who was interviewed in 2002 by his classmate Sally McKenzie, talks about his memories as a student in a stellar year that included Judy Davis, Steve Bisley, Robert Menzies, Annie Byron, Debra Lawrance, Linda Newton and the theatre director Peter Kingston. "I found out recently I'm manic depressive," he added. He was arrested on July 28, 2006 for DUI while speeding in his vehicle with an open container of alcohol, and was also accused of making the derogatory remarks about Jews to the sheriff's deputy who arrested him. However, Gibson has repeatedly apologized for making the derogatory comments.
What Depressive Symptoms and Disorders Are Linked to Adolescent Suicide?
2008-05-15 14:00:00 A study reported in the April 2008 issue of the Journal of Affective Disorders examines the role of depressive symptoms and disorders as potential predictors of suicidal behaviour in adolescents. The authors used a representative sample of 2464 Norwegian school students (average age 13.7 years) who were initally tested (T1). These same subjects were followed up and reassessed a year later (T2). All subjects who scored significantly high on the depresson questionnaire at the one year mark (T2) were matched with low- or middle-scoring respondents according to age and gender. A subset of 345 subjects were diagnostically assessed by face-to-face interviews (mean age=14.9 years) and then reassessed after five years (T3) using telephone interviews and questionnaires. There were 265 subjects tested with a participation rate of 76.9%. The results indicated that cognitive symptoms were predominant among suicide attempters, regardless of age. Among younger adolescents, suicidal t...

Is Bill O'Reilly Manic Depressive?
2008-05-12 17:14:00 Why this boomerang has come back is anyone's guess. Here's scary Bill O'Reilly foaming at the mouth after a taped tease f**k up. It's ancient vid when Bill hosted the frothy entertainment show "Inside Edition" 1989-1995 before Deborah Norville. Bill bellows "f**k" when he effs up his lines and blames it on the studio grunts. I got a recurrence of post-traumatic stress symptoms after watching O'Reilly's outburst... In Bill's playbook there's a chapter on devaluing humans, rationalization, delusion, and violence.

Vaak staan de beelden op plaatsen waar veel kinderen bij elkaar komen, als bijvoorbeeld speeltuinen. Manic-depressive creativity.

What is the definition of major depressive disorder and what are the sympto
2008-04-29 01:49:00 I am often asked about what is the difference between depression and major depressive disorder. Major depression is when five or more symptoms of depression are present for at least 2 weeks. These symptoms include feeling sad, hopeless, worthless, or pessimistic. In addition, people with major depression often have behavior changes, such as new eating and sleeping patterns. Major depression increases a person's risk of suicide. Listed below are the nine symptoms from which five or more must be present to be diagnosed with major depression: Trouble sleeping or excessive sleeping A dramatic change in appetite often with weight gain or loss Inactivity and withdrawal from usual activities, a loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed (such sex) Feelings of worthlessness, self-hate, and inappropriate guilt Thoughts of death or suicide Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness Extreme difficulty concentrating Fatique and lack of energy Ag...

FDA Approves Cymbalta for Maintenance Treatment of Major Depressive Disorde
2007-12-04 16:53:00 Eli Lilly and Company announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Cymbalta(R) (duloxetine HCl) for the maintenance treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. "Relapse, the re-emergence of depressive symptoms after a successful treatment of depression, is a significant clinical concern," says Doug Williamson, M.D., Cymbalta associate medical director for Eli Lilly and Company. "This approval from the FDA is important because data from our Cymbalta clinical trial demonstrate that continuing to treat the patient delays the time to possible relapse." "Once an episode of depression has been successfully treated, it is imperative that the symptoms do not return," said Lauren Marangell, M.D., an internationally recognized expert on depression and other mood disorders and a distinguished scholar at Lilly. "The American Psychiatric Association has recommended maintenance of antidepressant treatment to help dec...
The Ranking Of Most Depressive Professions in USA
2007-10-30 10:14:00 The baby-sitters and nurses, as well as members of other public caterers more often suffer from depression. That is the conclusion of The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), who researched the relationship between the profession and the risk of depression, reported The Washington Post.In the study, scientists used the national survey data (National Survey of Drug Use and Health), which involved more than 60,000 people. Among those surveyed, there were persons working full time, people aged 18 to 64 years. "Depression Ratings" cover 21 fields of professional activities. The largest number of people suffering from depression was registered among those who take care of elderly and sick people, as well as nurses caring for small children. Almost 11% of workers in this field each year suffer from depression for two or more weeks. On the second place are public catering workers - waiters, cooks and bartenders: 10,3% of them are exposed to the symptoms of depr...

What increases the risk of depression? What triggers a major depressive epi
2007-08-14 16:17:00 Sometimes it never hurts to state the obvious. If you suffer from depression or have had a major depressive episode, it is critical that you avoid activities that might aggravate your depression or trigger a major depressive episode. This simple piece of advice can be difficult to execute in "real life" situations. I have learned the importance of just saying "no". It makes life so much easier. Causes and triggers of depression What Increases Your RiskSeveral factors increase your risk for depression. Your risk of developing depression is up to three times greater than that of the general population if you have a father, mother, or sibling with depression. If you have had depression before, you are much more likely to have depression again. 3 Other risk factors for depression include: A history of heart problems, such as coronary artery disease. A serious, ongoing (chronic) illness, such as diabetes, cancer, or chronic pain. Problems in your...
Digg is like a Manic-Depressive Girlfriend
2007-07-27 16:57:00 And I say this with the authority of having had a couple of those in my early twenties... Many guys starting out fall into this trap. It's easy to do, because when you meet an as-yet-untreated manic-depressive who happens to be at the top of their cycle, they'll charm you like a fairy. They're energetic and glib and fun to be around. Two weeks later, you're wondering what happened to that person and who is this new angry and/or unhappy person you're seeing? And what on Earth did you do to deserve that? In my professional capacity, I have had about too many clients who hyper-focus on Digg.com. They don't care what I write, draw, design, or do, as long as it gets onto Digg's front page. If it happens to be a hit on Digg, I get praised outrageously as a genius and they plead with me to repeat the same magic again next week. If it doesn't happen to work, the client is polite enough to not blame me (thank goodness), but is still disappointed, disillusioned, and asking for my cr...
Major depressive is disorder is now the leading cause of disability world a
2007-07-24 01:13:00 Well, unfortunately we have a lot of company around the world. Global company. According to the World Health Organization(WHO) , Major depressive disorder (MDD) is now the fourth-leading cause of the global disease burden and the leading cause of disability worldwide. In addition:WHO expects that depression will be the second leading cause of disability after heart disease by 2020WHO also commented about anxiety disorders; "generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic, disabling disorder associated with substantial personal, societal, and economic costs." Co-existing GAD in depressed patients may worsen the outcome by increasing the rates of suicide, worsening overall symptoms, conferring a poorer response to treatment, increasing the number of medically unexplained symptoms, and increasing functional disability. The comorbidity of GAD with major depressive episode (MDE) has been of special interest because of the high level of comorbidity and the status of MDE as one of the mos...

Bipolar Disorder (Manic-Depressive Illness) Symptoms - Bipolar Disorder Tre
2007-05-16 06:40:00 Bipolar disorder is a psychological disturbance in which you may suffer from a manic state (impulsive, aggressive behavior) alone, or alternating manic and depressive states. The pattern of mood swings can vary widely. In some people, years can separate manic and depressive episodes. In other people, the cycles occur three or four times a year with respites in between. For still others, the cycles can rapidly and continuously alternate. Often, this disorder is difficult to correctly diagnose, because its depression appears the same as other types of depression. Unless a therapist observes or knows about the manic phase, the true diagnosis may remain hidden. There are two types, bipolar I and bipolar II. In bipolar I, both phases (mania and depression) are very pronounced. In bipolar II, the mania is mild and the depression can be mild or severe. Bipolar II is more difficult to diagnose but is the most common form. It has fewer and shorter periods of remission, tends to run in familie...

Depressive Symptoms, Smoking, Drinking, and Quality of Life Among Head and
2007-03-02 05:49:02 The authors examined the relationship between depressive symptoms, smoking, problem drinking, and quality of life among 973 head and neck cancer patients who were surveyed and had their charts audited. Forty-six percent screened positive for depressive symptoms, 30% smoked, and 16% screened positive for problem drinking. Controlling for clinical and demographic variables, linear-regression analyses showed that depressive symptoms had a strong negative association with all 12 quality-of-life scales; smoking had a negative association on all but one of the quality-of-life scales; and problem drinking was not associated with any of the quality-of-life scales. Interventions targeting depression, smoking, and problem drinking need to be integrated into oncology clinics.
Depressive Disorders After 20 Months in Elderly Stroke Patients
1970-01-01 00:59:00 Depression is common after stroke. Reported frequencies vary widely between studies because of differences in patient selection, time from stroke to assessment, evaluation methods and diagnostic criteria. Poststroke depression is related to increased mortality and poorer rehabilitation outcome. Few studies have been done in the elderly, and there is a lack of studies with population-based controls. We aimed to examine the risk of depression in elderly patients one and a half years after stroke and to compare the risk with a population-based control sample.
Comparison of depressive symptoms between homebound older adults and ambula
1970-01-01 00:59:00 Due to the social isolation imposed by chronic illness and functional limitations, homebound older adults are more vulnerable to depression than their mobility-unimpaired peers. In this study, we compared 81 low-income homebound older adults, aged 60 and older, with their 130 ambulatory peers who attended senior centers, with respect to their depressive symptoms, depression risk and protective factors, and self-reported coping strategies.
Escitalopram Prevents Relapse in Older Patients With Major Depressive Disor
1970-01-01 00:59:00 The present study investigated the efficacy and tolerability of escitalopram in the prevention of relapse of major depressive disorder (MDD) in older patients who had responded to acute treatment with escitalopram. A total of 405 patients who were aged 65 years or older with a primary diagnosis of MDD (according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition criteria) and a Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total score of 22 or more received 12-week, open-label escitalopram 10 or 20 mg per day treatment. Remitters (MADRS ?12) were randomized to 24-week double-blind treatment with escitalopram or placebo.
Psychological distress, major depressive disorder, and risk of stroke
1970-01-01 00:59:00 Background: Studies have suggested that mood status is associated with an increased risk of stroke, though mostly based on measures of depression defined by symptoms alone rather than diagnostic criteria representative of clinically important distress and impairment. We investigated this association based upon a large population-based prospective cohort study. Methods: Baseline assessment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and of mental health well-being (defined by the Mental Health Inventory, MHI-5) was completed by 20,627 stroke-free participants, aged 41 to 80 years, in the United Kingdom European Prospective Investigation into Cancer?Norfolk study. |
