Des Browne says book launch is official engagement.
2008-04-22 19:49:00 I can't understand why Des Browne considers attending the launch for Stephen Walker?s book, ?Shot at Dawn? to be an official engagement. The book tells the story of how twenty-eight Irish men serving in British regiments met their deaths. Even though there is a military connection, I can't see why our Defence Secretary should officially attend the book launch of a BBC journalist?I might be wrong, it could be quite a normal for a senior minister to carry out such duties, but if that is the case, I find it very strange. Maybe someone could enlighten me?

Des Browne apologises for missing MOD Laptop
2008-01-21 18:00:00 Des two jobs Browne is on the parliamentary channel at the moment apologising for the recent loss of an MOD Laptop containing the personal details of 600,000 serving and potential members of the Armed Forces. Liam Fox brought up the fact that a staggering 340 MOD Laptops have been lost in the last four years. Liam rightly pointed out that this does not indicate one officer making a stupid mistake - this shows yet another systemic failure in the security procedures carried out by a governmental department.Liam Fox has submitted a post on this subject over on the new and shiny CentreRight.com.

Gordon Brown's address to the CBI - A new world order?
2007-11-26 09:48:00 Having returned to the UK, Gordon Brown will attempt to restore faith in his floundering government in a speech to the CBI. Brown is expected to announce greater spending on transport infrastructure and energy, including nuclear power stations. If Gordon really wants to impress the nation with increased spending, then he should give Des Browne the £1bn for defence that he refused him last week. Of course he won't because Des has already been told not to trouble his boss with further concerns over the defence budget. That to me sounds a bit imperious, I can just imagine Gordon wearing a toga, laying on the sofa in No10 whilst dictating his commands to a lowly scribe.Gordon will use sugar to make the bad medicine he has to announce in his speech go down. He will announce that the planning system will be streamlined so that it will be easier to build nuclear power stations - the sugar will be that this will also make it easier to build homes. He will announce a third runway at Heathro...

2007-11-25 11:44:00 You've heard the one about how copper wire was invented haven't you? Well it seems that Gordon Brown and Des Browne are reenacting the old joke. Des Browne is reported to have tried (and failed) to get Gordon's permission to release an extra £1 billion from the treasury to spend on defence. According to The Independent on Sunday, Des Browne was told not to trouble his boss with further concerns over the defence budget. Full Story HERE

Will Des Browne Be Forced To Resign ?
2007-04-16 10:09:00 Tory leader David Cameron said yesterday that Des Browne must resign from the Cabinet unless he can convince MPs that he still commands the support of the Armed Forces after the Iran captives fiasco. Today, Defence Secretary Browne will make a statement to MPs regarding the seizure in the Gulf last month, their 13 days of captivity at the hands of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, and the decision
Des browne on Trident
2007-02-06 23:10:00 Defence Secretary Des Browne has said maintaining Trident was the "overwhelmingly sensible" decision for MPs to make when they vote on the government's White Paper. The White Paper had set out the nature of the threat that the country is "likely to and probably will" face in coming years. Mr Browne went on to say: "Once you accept that that threat is there, you commit to a deterrent."A vote is to be held in March, asking MP's whether the Trident nuclear weapons system should be replaced. The Trident system is due to go out of service in 2024 and Ministers are to select a replacement after a three-month consultation.Commons leader Jack Straw said: "We have a responsibility not to cop out of this but to come to a decision, and we shall. "We're talking about defence of the nation here, not the Shops Act or fox hunting."Mr Blair has said that Trident is an essential part of Britain's ability to defend itself. With an estimated cost of up to £25bn, anti-nuclear campaigners say the mone...
