Despite skepticism this year, DMR nailed some very important points. They predicted the 200K Dem turnout, and ...
Twelve Arrested in Des Moines as Obama Campaign Hinders Press Coverage of P
2008-01-03 10:48:00
by Michael Gillespie Josh Earnest, Iowa communications director for U.S. Sen. Barak Obama (D-IL), is running scared in the final few days before the Iowa Caucuses. He must be, otherwise he would not have risked the consequences of ejecting half a dozen media workers from Obama’s Iowa campaign headquarters on Wednesday, Jan. 2, and barring entry to several more. Reporters and photojournalists representing news organizations in Japan, Germany, Great Britain, and the USA were hindered in their efforts to report on a bona fide news event when Earnest insisted they work outside in the sub-freezing single digit cold while inside a group of eight antiwar activists from Voices for Creative Nonviolence (VCNV) and the Iowa Occupation Project questioned Obama’s positions on the war in Iraq, military spending, and U.S. Middle East foreign policy. Though he knew who the protesters represented and why they had come to Obama campaign headquarters (this reporter heard an Obama staffer say, “We...

Barack Obama "Our Moment Is Now" Speech In Des Moines Iowa
2007-12-28 01:25:00
Today, in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S. Senator Barack Obama gave what many have said -- including Time Magazine -- is the best speech of the presidential campaign. I also remind all that it was Senator Obama who stated months ago that our focus should be not in Iraq, but in Pakistan, where Prime Minister Butto was assassinated today.

Democrats Jockey For Position In Des Moines Register Debate: I Rank Them
2007-12-17 06:31:00
In the Des Moines Register Iowa Debate amongst Democrats, I didn't sense a real winner. In the end, I fashioned my rankings based more upon what I think Democrats are looking for and how they might perceive the candidates. Since the debate was based on the idea that it was primarily directed towards the voters in the Iowa caucuses, the pandering was abundant. I was very impressed by the moderator; Carolyn Washburn, Editor for the Des Moines Register did a great job keeping candidates to their times and came up with one of the best debate formats I have seen yet. I would love to see your rankings to, if you decide to post them. So without further adieu, my rankings of the Democrats in the latest debate.First Place: Barack Obama- Obama is a huge confidence builder for Democrats. His invocation of Dr. Martin Luther King's insistence of "the fierce urgency of now," was downright inspiring. I noticed that during the first segment of the debate, Obama got very little speaking time, whic...

2007-12-16 06:44:00
DMR CHOICE - BIG MISTAKE. But the seeds in the DMR selection of Clinton over Obama, sadly, are summed up in the second paragraph of the editorial: "No fewer than three candidates would, by their very identity, usher the nation to the doorstep of history. Should the party offer the nation the chance to choose its first woman president? Or its first black president? Or its first Latino president?" In other words gender and ethnicity -- not talent or experience -- played a major role in the selection of Clinton. Three women -- all White -- selected a White Woman who's running for President, then had the wrong-headed action of referring to the choice of picking a Woman over someone Black or Latino. Wow! The editorial never mentioned the need to get out of Iraq and bring our troups home. In fact, it doesn't even mention Iraq at all! Senator Barack Obama has been focused on this from day one -- Senator Clinton says she'll do it just to get a vote. The DMR editorial board gave a most c...

Des Moines Register Endorses Clinton and McCain
2007-12-16 03:52:00
I did not see this coming, but the Des Moines Register has endorsed Senator Hillary Clinton of New York for the Democratic nomination and Senator John McCain of Arizona for the Republican nomination. You can read the editorial for the Democratic endorsement here and the Republican endorsement here. The theme of the endorsement is competence and preparedness to lead America through these difficult times. This is certainly good news for Clinton who has not had a particularly good six weeks. Obama has gained momentum in the state and this endorsement gives her the opportunity for some good news and a chance to at least slow Obama's momentum. While I still don't expect Clinton to win Iowa (it is just not her state), I believe Edwards will win it, this endorsement may decide who comes in second and who will win NH (not Edwards state), SC and ultimately the nomination. As for McCain, he is far from winning Iowa or even placing third place in Iowa. His campaign has written off the state and ...
Des Moines Register Expected To Make Endorsement Soon

Des Moines Register Republican Debate from Iowa (YouTube Videos)
2007-12-14 08:51:00
Wednesday, December 12, 2007 the Des Moines Register hosted the last Republican debate before the critical January 3rd Iowa caucus. Carolyn Washburn of the Register was the moderator. One of the main topics of the debate was the fair-tax. Huckabee has been gaining major popularity in Iowa recently and he is one candidate who is in favor of getting rid of the income tax. Huckabee has proposed a ?fair-tax?, also known as a consumption tax, to replace the income tax. A consumption tax would be based on what people buy instead of their income. The more you buy, especially luxury items, you will be taxed more. Those that have less money to spend will be taxed very little. "That means the rich people aren't going to be made poor, but maybe the poor people will be made rich. That ought to be the goal of any tax system ? not to punish somebody but to enable somebody, so they can have a part of the American dream," Huckabee said. Romney on the other hand is mor...

New weight-loss drug fails to gain among Des Moines dieters

You've read the statistics about obesity in America - about 33 percent of adults are obese; approximately 17 percent of adolescents are overweight. Some, frustrated with their efforts to slim down, will turn to a pill to lose the extra pounds. It may be a drug designed to promote weight loss or one where weight loss is a side effect. One of the new pharmaceutical weapons for the millions battling their weight, a drug called Alli, hit the market late last month.Alli, a nonprescription version of Xenical, was the first of its kind to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The drug works by preventing fat from being absorbed in the system - a process called malabsorption. The major drawback with Alli, health care professionals in Des Moines said, is an unpleasant side effect, diarrhea.Because fat cannot be absorbed, eating something like a cheeseburger will trigger the reaction.Because of that, health care professionals were skeptical that patients could religiously use the drug...

What's the Deal In Des Moines Iowa? Frozen Pizza

Des Moines Register Poll: Sen. Barack Obama in 2nd
2007-05-21 12:33:00
This just goes to show how polls are irrelevant and annoying, particularly this early in the presidential election race.Just one week after a separate poll showed Sen. Barack Obama trailing in third place, the most recent Des Moines Register poll now has Sen. Obama trailing to John Edwards. The Iowa Poll shows Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, is the first choice of 29 percent of those who say they definitely or probably will attend the January caucuses, which kick off the nominating process for the nation. Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois, edges out Clinton for second place in the poll ? 23 percent to 21 percent.Give it another week and I'm confident the poll standings will shift yet again.
Day 283 - March 2 - Des Moines
2007-03-05 21:05:02
Good morning world of coldnessBlizzards are both cold and windy. Furthermore, they tend to heap a big pile of inconvenience onto this contraption called life. While slippery is an asset for some things, when blankets of snow form a slippery layer between car tires and the earth on which they travel, the likelihood of a less than optimum outcome is considerably increased. Being that our roadie lives are spent a midst a traveling road show, it is safe to say that we are not overly thrilled that this blizzard has decided to showcase it's capabilities in the same city and time that we are attempting to rock. The treacherous blizzard attempts to unrockify us but to no avail as we will persevere sally forth and onward ho.**** Electric Inside ****Something so magnetically wonderful about the going inside where the electrons flow. 2007-03-02 09:02:02
Bus ride to Des Moines, ice storm outside and doing a bit of bus bunk computing.Back and running and all just seems to pick up where it left off. Currently the biggest challenge with these tour stops and starts, lays in the band's laps. Production wise, the trucks are loaded and still how we left them on the last gig, business as usual for us. Whereas the band guys take playing every show the best they can to heart and are caught balancing well needed breaks with hitting the ground full speed. It kind of reminds me of athletes in a way but rather than training for an event, they need to stay constantly in shape. To much push and they burn out, not enough and they become unsatisfied with the shows. The constant self pressure to strive, is an impressive trait and those that have it, often end up in amazing places and lives, like our our musical Peppers friends have. And here is something I have been meaning to do for a while, have a look around Milwaukee gig from FOH perspectivehttp:/...
