Schoolboys punished with detention for refusing to kneel in class and pray
2008-07-18 13:26:00
DAILY MAIL says on 04th July 2008, 'Two schoolboys were given detention after refusing to kneel down and 'pray to Allah' during a religious education lesson.Parents were outraged that the two boys from year seven (11 to 12-year-olds) were punished for not wanting to take part in the practical demonstration of how Allah is worshipped. They said forcing their children to take part in the exercise at Alsager High School, near Stoke-on-Trent - which included wearing Muslim headgear - was a breach of their human rights.Alsager School, near Stoke, has received furious complaints from parents after two Year 7 boys were punished for refusing to kneel to Allah during a religious studies classOne parent, Sharon Luinen, said: "This isn't right, it's taking things too far."I understand that they have to learn about other religions. I can live with that but it is taking it a step too far to be punished because they wouldn't join in Muslim prayer."Making them pray to Allah, who isn't who th...
Cannabis grower denied home detention

A year for pot, fur krise ake! $200 tonnes or more is dispatched benignly, the social harms are weak, and harms to self, while also 'very weak' who the hell cares? Judge Harding has just added about $100,000 to the 'pterodactyl prevention' budget. Further, this man will probably never work again and who could blame him. No doubt the Police could equally argue that they have saved the community Millions.... Puke! /BlairCannabis grower denied home detentionMonday July 07, 2008Home detention was "inappropriate" for a man who had been growing cannabis to supplement his sickness benefit, a judge said today. Gordon Brown Defies Parliament On Terrorist Detention
2008-06-03 09:00:00
Prime Minister Gordon Brown was insistent that police should have the right to detain suspected terrorists for up to 42 days without any charges being presented against them. He is facing a probable defeat in parliament on the issue, but is determined to stick to his guns on what he believes is essential to deal with terrorist activities. “The complexity and sophistication of investigatons that now have to be conducted by the police, compared and contrasted with what was happening 10 years ago, make it inevitable that the police will need more time to conduct their investigations.” Brown is confronting a rebellion by members of his party who are prepared to vote against the government. “I have tried to build consensus around our proposals but I am determined that we stick to our principles and that is that up to 42-day detentiion is and will be necessary in the future, but Parliament will make the final decision on the individual incident itself.” Gordon Brow...

Superintendent of detention centre sacked over Singapore Mas Selamat’
2008-05-26 23:43:00
Superintendent of detention centre sacked over Singapore Mas Selamat’s escape By Wong Siew Ying, SINGAPORE: The superintendent of the Whitley Road Detention Centre has been sacked over security lapses that led to the escape of Jemaah Islamiyah detainee Mas Selamat Kastari on February 27. His deputy has been demoted, with a corresponding pay cut. The two were the most senior officers in charge of the ground management of the detention centre, and were among six Internal Security Department (ISD) officers charged over the escape. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng disclosed this when he updated Parliament on the disciplinary action taken after Mas Selamat’s escape. Mr Wong said: “These two officers have been held accountable for the lack of supervision over the subordinate officers implicated, which resulted in lapses that enabled Mas Selamat to escape from WRDC. “The superintendent has also been held accountable for failing to t...
42 day detention - The committee say NO.
2008-05-15 13:19:00
More bad news for Gordon Brown. A committee of MPs and Peers have poo-pooed his call for the terror detention limit to be extended to 42 days: "Our view is that the government has not made out its case for the need to extend pre-charge detention beyond the current limit of 28 days". I wonder why the 42 day question has been moved to take place after the Crewe and Nantwich by-election? What are the chances of Brown and his goons listening to, and learning from the committees' recommendations? Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

Raja Petra Kamaruddin?s detention on Reuter
2008-05-07 04:00:00
I?m not a big fan of Raja Petra Kamaruddin and his Malaysia Today blog. I really didn?t like his style of outright bashing of fellow Muslims and Malays (no matter how bad they may be) on his blog, very much to the glee and delight of the non-Muslims and non-Malays here in Malaysia.Who will lose in the long run? Can?t you see it, my fellow Muslim & Malay Brothers and Sisters?Well RPK, I certainly hope that you know what you are doing this time. California: Hundreds Of Illegal Immigrants Riot At Detention Center
2008-04-24 22:30:00
LANCASTER, Calif. - Hundreds of illegal immigrants awaiting deportation rioted at a county-run detention center and had to be subdued with tear gas, authorities said Wednesday. The riot Tuesday started as a fight between detainees from rival gangs and spread to the detention center's outdoor yard, said Virginia Kice, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Nearby sheriff's stations sent additional deputies to separate the detainees. The brawl was diffused "within minutes" after tear gas was used, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.Fights among incarcerated gang members periodically break out at state jails, prisons and immigrant detention facilities, sometimes sparking riots. The federal Department of Homeland Security contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to staff and manage the Mira Loma Detention Center in Lancaster, which holds about 900 detainees who are in the process of being deported or awaiting resolution of their cases in immi...

Cebu Provincial Detention & Rehabilitation Center are at it again!
2008-04-02 13:24:00
I just love the group organized dances that they do at Cebu Provincial Detention & Rehabilitation Center that anytime there is a new one on YouTube, I am going to post it. Maybe if other countries around the world see the positive effect that the dancing has on the prisoners they will try that as a form of rehabilitation too! It seems to be working, so why not! Plus they could probably make money over the performances, I know I would pay to see them to dance! If Laura Branigan were still with us, she would probably be so proud of what they did to her song. (Side note: She was taken from us way too young.)

Student receives detention for Fairfax schools snow call
2008-01-26 12:09:00
Fairfax County, Virginia student Devraj "Dave" Kori has been issued a one-day detention for his involvement in the infamous snow call fiasco that attracted national online firestorm. The student will serve the suspension today at Lake Braddock Secondary School.Kori was punished only for making a cellphone call during school hours, a technical rules violation. School officials completely sidestepped the questions of whether Kori should also be punished for a) specifically calling administrator Dean Tistadt's home, b) posting the voice mail response from Tistadt's wife Candy Tistadt to the net or c) posting Tistadt's home and office phone numbers online. A one day detention seems wholly inadequate considering the harm that Kori and his contemporaries had inflicted to the couple in this fiasco. A civil suit against Kori for emotional distress, now that would be more fitting.Technorati: virginia, education, fairfax countyRelevant links: Washington Post, AP via WUSA/9

Jacqui Smith wants to extend 28 day detention limit to 42 days.
2007-12-06 16:24:00
So much for announcing matters of importance to parliament and not to the media. Jacqui Smith strikes again. In an attempt to push out as much policy as possible to take the media's attention away from Labour's current woes, they have gone back on a promise made only weeks ago. Nick Robinson is one journalist who is not falling for it. Jacqui Smith told the media this morning of her plans to extend the 28 day detention limit to 42 days. Why 42 days? Well some believe that Jacqui is so desperate to raise the limit that she has lowered her previous wish of 56 days in the hope that she will gain support from the Labour back benches.Liberty Director Shami Chakrabarti said:?The Home Secretary?s abrupt announcement wastes so much goodwill and months of so-called consensus building on national security. There is no evidence to extend beyond what is already the longest period in the Western world. The Government risks alienating backbenchers, opposition parties and Liberty with this polit...

Innocent until proved hypothetically guilty - 28 day detention.
2007-11-21 19:12:00
Two senior men in the world of law today informed the home affairs committee that an extension to the 28 day detention limit was not required. Sir Ken MacDonald the director of public prosecutions, and Ex-Attorney General Lord Goldsmith disagree with minsters and police who say they want to extend detention without charge. Sir Ken said: "Our experience so far has been that we have managed - and managed reasonably comfortably. "Of course it's always possible to set up hypothetical situations in which it could become extremely challenging - and it's for Parliament to decide whether it wants to proceed on the basis of hypotheticals - rather than the evidence we have received so far. "If after 25 or 26 days you couldn't find a reasonable suspicion to justify a charging decision it might be quite difficult for a prosecutor to persuade a court." Lord Goldsmith, who quit as attorney general when Gordon Brown became prime minister, said: "If the 90 day proposal had come from the Commons ...
