Take That Detroit (Lions)
2008-06-09 17:23:00
MJD at Yahoo compiled a list of the coolest helmets in football history. The Pittsburgh Steelers placed first as you probably suspected (since I wouldn?t write a post about the Cleveland Browns or Baltimore Ravens helmet). Anyway, here are a few fun facts from the article:? It's the only professional helmet to use a logo that was once a corporate logo before it became a football team logo (other than the short-lived and now defunct Miami Hooters of the Arena Football league).? It is the only helmet in the NFL to have a logo on one side, but not the other.? There are two colors present in the helmet logo that exist nowhere else in the Steelers uniform: red and blue.

People In Detroit Don?t Like The Lions
2008-05-06 06:16:00
It’s pretty bad when the fans in your city really don’t like the NFL team that plays across the street. Take a look at the sign a fan had during last night’s Boston Red Sox-Detroit Tigers game.
Caleb Campbell Forgoes Iraq For NFL's Detroit Lions - Video
2008-04-28 06:33:00
In the 7th Round of the 2008 NFL Draft a huge cheer erupted from the small-compared-to-Day-One crowd and it was for a little-known cadet who also played football for Army. Caleb Campbell, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in that last round. As that happened I talked to Dr. Bill Chackhes who gave me the details on Campbell's story. Caleb basically deferred going to Iraq as a officer after he is to graduate with the current Army class of 2008. The Army is allowing him to play in the NFL.Everyone was enthusiastic to meet the man Bill called "The All American Boy" and this video captures that moment:
Picking Up The Blitz Ver 5.3
2008-04-28 04:45:00
In the 7th Round with the 218th pick of the NFL Draft the Detroit Lions took Army’s Caleb Campbell. When he was picked the fans in attendance at Radio City Music Hall went nuts and burst into a chant of “U-S-A!”. Very fitting for a man of Campbell’s stature. In the old days if someone from ...
State of the Franchise: The Detroit Lions
2008-04-12 10:08:00
During the 2007 pre-season, Jon Kitna predicted that the Lions would win more than 10 games that season. Within a few hours, the story was everywhere and nearly everyone thought he was nuts. Sure, it was a ballsy thing to do? but did he have a concussion or something? Perhaps the most surprising
The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #15 - Detroit Lions
2008-04-03 18:36:00
With the 14th pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Chicago Bears select Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt. Williams picked up 52% of the vote.  Second place was Branden Albert with 10%. So here are the last 5 picks of the draft: New Orleans Saints - Keith Rivers, LB, USC (41%) Buffalo Bills - Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma (25%) Denver Broncos - Jeff Otah, OT, Pitt (30%) Carolina Panthers - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois (32%) Chicago Bears - Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt To see the entire mock draft so far, click here. Up next, with the 15th pick, are the Detroit Lions.  For analysis and insight on the Lions, head over to Pride of Detroit.  Below are the Lions' draft needs, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Running Back: Kevin Jones was never able to stay healthy and was sent packing which essentially leaves little (Brian Calhoun) or nothing (Aveion Cason) on their roster at the running back position. 2. Offensive Tackle: George Foster was a massive di...
In The Red Zone: Are Patriots Pacman Jonesing?
2008-03-22 15:00:00
Two weeks ago we reported that the New England Patriots had some possible interest in suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones along with several other teams. I even mentioned in the comments for the post that I thought it was a case of the Patriots brass, Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick, doing their due diligence in the situation. Well now it has apparently turned out that New England, along with Dallas and Detroit, may actually be doing more than just kicking the tires. John Tomase of the Boston Herald has a quote from Jones agent Manny Arora on the situation. “Tennessee has said publicly that they’re considering all their options, including a trade. If Tennessee decides there is going to be a trade, New England would be a very good fit for us. The reason for that is great leadership, strong coaching and a winning tradition.” “Over my years representing athletes and being a lawyer, as long as you’re winning, all the baggage...
Breaking News: Patriots Sign Cornerback
2008-03-20 17:15:00
According to profootballtalk.com the New England Patriots have signed free agent cornerback Fernando Bryant to a contract. The contract is reportedly for one year. Bryant, former first round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1999, played the last four seasons with Detroit after five seasons with Jacksonville where he played under Patriots coach Dom Capers when he was the defensive coordinator there. He enters his 10th NFL season having played in 110 games. The 5-foot-11 Bryant is not considered particularly physical but has a reputation as a solid cover corner downfield.

In The Red Zone: Patriots Considering Pacman
2008-03-09 02:00:00
The New England Patriots are reportedly interested in Tennessee Titans cornerback/suspended bad boy Adam “Pacman” Jones. Detroit, Oakland, Kansas City, Houston, New Orleans and Dallas are among those to also have expressed at least some level of interest. Jones, who was suspended all of last season, could come up for review for re-instatement prior to the NFL Draft in April. Jones who was the 6th overall pick in the 2005 draft is considered a top cover corner and is an extremely dangerous punt returner. But he is becoming more well known for his off field behavior than his actions on Sundays. He’s been arrested six times since being drafted by the Titans and was at the center of a Las Vegas strip club melee in February 2007 that left a man paralyzed. He’s currently serving three years probation, stemming from an incident in Fayette County, Ga., where he was alleged to have bitten a police officer’s hand. So the questions begs to be asked. Does “Pa...
Julius Jones heading to the Detroit Lions?
2008-03-05 00:57:00
Running back Julius Jones’ first free-agent visit is Detroit. Jones, an unrestricted free agent, is expected to meet with the Lions on Tuesday. Looks like Jones is one of four players visiting Detroit, along with linebacker Dan Morgan, offensive lineman Corey Hulsey and defensive lineman Chuck Darby. Detroit might be a fit for Jones given Kevin Jones’ injury ...

Gameday Thread: Tampa Bay Buccaneers AT Detroit Lions

What: Bucs AT Lions When: 1:00pm Est on Fox Where: Ford Field The Bucs and Lions square off today in what should be a big time physical match-up. Former DE Dewayne White gets to show the Bucs Organization they made the wrong move. LB Ernie Sims will try and dismantle QB Jeff Garcia and any ball carrier that tempts him. MLB Barrett Ruud gets a shot to improve upon his record inducing tackle totals. The Defensive Line should really shine today, as its no secret the Lions lack any resemblence of an offensive line. RB Kevin Jones will get the start today, hopefully hopefully hopefully he is sluggish. Megatron aka WR Calvin Johnson will play today, possibly making Bruce Allen wish he had traded up in the NFL Draft. Injury Report: OUT for the Bucs: RB Michael Pittman, TE Alex Smith, DE Patrick Chukwurah, CB Brian Kelly Questionable for Game Time: WR Ike Hilliard, DE Gaines Adams OUT for the Lions: Nobody Questionable for Game Time: TE Sean McHugh, CB Keith Smith, CB Stanley Wilso...

Gameday Spotlight: Detroit Lions LB Ernie Sims
2007-10-21 03:56:00
I know its weird to spotlight a player on the opposing team, but bare with me, it relates to the Bucs I promise.... Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press relays Lions LB Ernie Sims ambition to be as good, if not better than legendary Bucs LB Derrick Brooks. When former Bucs Coach Rob Marinelli joined the Detroit Lions, the first thing he did was send a video tape over to young LB Ernie Sims..... the tape was a highlight reel of some of Tampa Bay Bucs LB Derrick Brooks biggest hits collection. The message rang loud and clear to LB Ernie Sims: "He sent me one clip of Derrick Brooks knocking somebody out his first year," Sims said. "And ever since then, that's what he's said he expected out of me." It would be foolish of you not to watch Sims on Sunday and see what type of gamer he is and can become. Like many other air breathing earthlings, Ernie describes his adoration for Poppa Brooks: "I looked up to him a lot," Sims said. "For one, he played at Florida State and he's a...

Detroit Lions Blogger comes through with the goods
2007-10-20 02:56:00
I asked our Detroit Lions Blogger, Sean, a couple questions about the Lions that I was interested in getting feed back on and here's his responses: JScott: How has Calvin Johnson played and is he everything you hoped for? Sean: In the games he was healthy for he was great. He showed off his athleticism on the catch that actually got him injured against Philly. Went up and somehow caught it over 2 defenders but landed squarely on his back. If he can get healthy fully then he should be good to go. JScott: Is Jon Kitna healthy? What could we expect to see from him this sunday? Sean: I think he is healthy, but with the way the o-line has played recently that will last only a few plays. He gets drilled on almost every pass because the blocking has sucked so much. JScott: Kevin Jones is back .... Will he really see the brunt of the work sunday? Sean: Jones is the starter and will get most of the carries if he stays healthy. Word on the street is that he was limping in pra...

Roy Williams to Jeff Garcia, Um Yeah... Tampa Bay Bucs-Detroit Lions Prelud
2007-10-19 03:15:00
Don't look for Bucs QB Jeff Garcia and Lions WR Roy Williams to meet at mid field after the game Sunday to share chuckles and hand shakes. Lions WR Roy Williams put QB Jeff Garcia on blast this week on WDFN ESPN Radio. He went as far as to say Garcia blamed his teammates rather than own up to his mistakes. Checkout that portion of the interview below by pressing play: It's kind of lame, after the fact, to call out your former QB publicly, but hey it makes for some good entertainment. It's a shame QB Jeff Garcia didn't hear this rant and get a chance to respond to it ....... Oh wait he did: "As a quarterback, you're always shouldering the blame," he said. "I had no problem absorbing whatever it was that I had to absorb (at times) when we weren't able to win football games. We play this game as a team and everybody's responsible and everybody has to have accountability. That's where I felt that, at times, there wasn't a whole lot of accountability among everyon...

Message Board Marauder

Our weekly look at the musings taking place on sports internet message boards, including a Yankees curse, the South, Matt Millen, and Kyle Boller vs. Tony Romo.- BroncosFreak: "TRADE CHAMP. Corners are too replaceable in this league to have so much stock in a single one. Currently, Champ is just passing his peak when it comes to trade value, and the Broncos have the wrong formula right now." - SwingBringsPain- ESPN.com - New York Yankees: "Curse is alive and well in NY. What we are seeing today is a direct result of the Red Sox reversing the curse on the Yankees in '04, and since that date the Yanks have gotten worse ... The reason for this is plain and simple. The curse has been reversed and the Yankees, inexorably, cannot keep themselves from failing no matter how "great" they are." - daedalo- FinHeaven: "Mike Greenberg reminds me of the little punk on the playground who won't stop talking about the stupidest things. Then, after you beat the tar out of him, he gets right back up...
Redskins will smite the Detroit Lions because...
2007-10-05 21:51:00
God wills it. Taken from Kissing Suzy Kolber. Yesterday Christmas Ape at KSK matched up John Kitna's God vs. our own Joe Gibbs' God: Praise be! The Lord's favored football disciples are rewarded by being on winning teams. Tony Dungy's Colts are 4-0, Shaun Alexander's C-Hox are 3-1, and facing off this week are Jon Kitna's surprising 3-1 Lions and Joe Gibbs' 2-1 godless sun worshipers. Of course, God's linebacker, Ray Lewis, is holding everybody back with the Ravens' disappointing 2-2 start, but he's been known to stray from time to time, anyway. Jesus' love is on the line. WHO YA GOT? Uhm, Coach Gibbs, duh. He has the vengeful God and "Fatuous Redskins fans" supporters, which I assume is a complement. More importantly than that, Lions WR Roy Williams is an immoral monster for failure to tip pizza delivery guys. Tipping is not a matter of etiquette. It is a moral imperative that you subsidize the meager earnings of people who use their own vehicles to deliver you pizz...
Detroit Lions Preview: Offense
2007-10-04 21:58:00
As others have noted, the Detroit Lions are kind of a big deal offensively. I'll try not to get all hysterical on that point, though the numbers certainly won't calm my nerves. (To alcohol we go!) This coming Sunday the good guys face off against the 4th most prolific offense in the league, currently, with an intimidating 387.2 YPG. Good news first: We won't have much trouble defending against the run because they don't really do so: The Lions are dead last in total attempts (78) and attempts per game (19.5). So are they just, like, that efficient? Meh, no. Their 3.8 YPC is pretty forgettable at 20th in the league. Testament to their inability to score and make game-changing rushing plays are a meager 3 rushing touchdowns thus far and a long after four games of 24 yards. [Aside: Did you know our longest rushing play of the 2007 season has been 20 yards? Wonderful.] They are surprisingly good at fumbling the ball, though, with 4, bad for 2nd worst in the league. The bad news: N...
Detroit Lions Preview: Defense
2007-10-04 04:02:00
We're up against the Detroit Lions this week (see: Pride of Detroit) a team that looks surprisingly sharp this year. It hasn't escaped my attention that the Lions already have as many or more wins than they had in the entire, ahem, 2006, 2002, and 2001 seasons. By historical contrast, Your Washington Redskins won only 3 games for the last time in 1994. Prior to that one must look back to the dark days of Bill McPeak in the early 60s for comparable bouts of failure, though those bouts of failure give me bouts of painful diarrhea just thinking about. Excuse me. Back to that Detroit Lions defense, going on traditional statistics. Against the pass the Detroit Lions rank 30th (tie with Cleveland) giving up a massive 267.5 yards per game in the air. Not as bad as you'd think, since they've been passed against a significant amount, credited likely to leading a good bit of their games through 4 weeks. In YPA they still rank near the bottom of the league, at 22nd, with 7.6 yards. Only si...

Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions - Open Game Thread
2007-08-31 00:01:00
0 at 6 LIVE, Second Quarter Game Preview :: Pride of Detroit Update [2007-8-30 20:3:10 by Brian G]: Problems continue to crop up for the Bills. Craig Nall has absolutely no time to throw and as a result his accuracy is erratic at best. Now he's fumbled a snap from Christian Gaddis, resulting in the second Bills turnover of the game. Update [2007-8-30 19:52:38 by Brian G]: DiGiorgio has redeemed himself, making a nice second-down stop on an outside run play as the Bills don't break once again. Field goal is good by Hanson. Update [2007-8-30 19:50:6 by Brian G]: Big mistake by John DiGiorgio. After a lucky stop by the defense, a punt hits DiGiorgio near the Bills goal line and the Lions recover. Lions are poised to score after the first turnover of the game. Update [2007-8-30 19:36:23 by Brian G]: End of the first quarter. The first unit defense is already out (although Posluszny is still playing, along with a D-Lineman or two) and it's likely that the ...
Fantasy Football Draft Tips - Detroit Lions Starting RB
2007-08-27 21:34:00
Grand Rapids Press has an interesting article up about what the Detroit Lions will do with RB Kevin Jones.  He is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and the team must decide by Saturday (September 1st) whether to keep him there or not.  If the team does keep him on the PUP, then he cannot play for the first six weeks of the season. Here's the crux of the debate concerning Jones: Even the most optimistic scenario has Jones missing one or two games to start the season. The coaches believe, though, that having Jones available for those two or three -- or maybe even four -- extra games could make the difference in the Lions' quest to make the playoffs. For fantasy teams drafting before that decision, both Jones and Tatum Bell are amongst the last RBs to be taken.  (80th and 68th, respectively, in standard leagues and nearly the same in PPRs - 76th and 68th.  Courtesy - Mock Draft Central.)  The PPR data is very surprising given that Jon...
2007 Detroit Lions Preview
2007-08-05 02:49:00
As a long suffering Detroit Lions fan I have very little optimism about the upcoming season. My best guess is that they will win either 3 or 4 games. However, if the stars align just right and there is a miracle of all miracles they might win 7 or 8 games. The odds aren't very good, but stranger
