Dennis Eckersley Is Once Again The Sacrificial Lamb
2008-10-15 06:47:00
During the EJ’s Neat-O Stat of the Night portion of the TBS broadcast after the ALCS Game 4 massacre, Dennis Eckersley was once again the sacrificial lamb as he was picked him on yet again, this time for it being the 20th anniversary (October 15, 1988) of Kirk Gibson hitting the memorable home run off ...
Possible Sellers: Detroit Tigers
2008-05-31 13:15:00
Once again, we're only two months into the season, and a lot can change between now and July. Using a familiar anecdote, the Yankees were 22-29 last May 31, and ended up being the best team in baseball in the second half. So while they looked like possible sellers on May 31, when July rolled around that would no longer be the case. The Detroit Tigers have a similar possibility this year. Touted by a to-be-unnamed ESPN analyst as having the best offense in baseball history, the Tigers have faltered in 2008. They're 23-31, good for fourth place in the AL Central. The good news is that they can turn it around. The bad news is that the division rival Cleveland Indians are also having a poor run, sitting at 25-29. Any potential run by the Tigers could be dampened by a potential Cleveland streak. So if you're Dave Dombrowski, do you consider reloading for next year? The armchair GM in us is likely to say yes. Clearly, though, Dombrowski won't be so impulsive. He and manager Jim Leyla...

Too Much Information
2008-05-28 16:30:00
This one is too good to pass up. There’s nothing like having your manager tell the whole world that you’re suffering from a case of hemorrhoids. There’s a reason Carlos Guillen had a rough game — including two errors — Monday night at third base. “He can hardly move — he’s got hemorrhoids so bad,” Tigers manager ...
Lester Shares Player of the Week Honors
2008-05-27 23:38:00
Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester and Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez were named Bank of America Co-Players of the Week in the American League for the week-ending May 25, 2008. Lester was 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched. He threw a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals on May ...
Matt Joyce, Detroit Tigers OF
2008-05-16 11:21:00
Joyce still slugging, unlike rest of Tigers: "Joyce, 23, was not a huge power guy last season at Double-A Erie. He had 17 homers in 130 games, but the capacity for younger players to get steadily stronger can lead to heftier home-run numbers, and often in a hurry. As a Tiger, Joyce is batting .292 with seven RBIs in eight games."Hitting from the left side should ensure Matt Joyce continues to see regular ABs. Given the lack of hitting depth in AL-Only leagues, he is a good gamble. On a listless Tigers' team that looks close to mailing the season in, Joyce is a breath of fresh air.At Fake Teams, there is a summary of what Baseball America and John Sickels said about him in their repsective 2008 prospect guides.

Josh Beckett went out and did just what the Boston Red Sox needed from him. A nice solid pitching effort on the mound. In the process, he also picked up his 1,000 strikeout in his career. The offense helped him out as well, getting him 3 runs in the 2nd inning and 2 in the ...

For the second time since we started doing full recaps of Boston Red Sox games here, I could not bring myself to write a recap. The reason? I think y’all know by now. If you want to pin this loss on Jonathan Papelbon for not having his best stuff, don’t do it. It wasn’t his fault. ...

The weather forecast isn’t looking to pretty tonight in Detroit as the Boston Red Sox and Tigers look to play game 3 of their 4-game set. The forecast calls for a 60% chance of showers with 20 to 30 MPH winds. It has been raining at Comerica Park for most of the day. So there’s ...

2008-05-07 15:30:00
I am sitting here trying to figure out what the real story of last night’s game Boston Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers game is. Is it Tim Wakefield’s 8 inning, 2-hit 6 strikeout performance? Or is it Big Papi and Manny having back-to-back jacks? Or is it Manny’s 497 home run of his career came ...
Wakefield Knuckles Over Tigers
2008-05-07 04:30:00
On a night where Jonathan Papelbon and Hideki Okajima weren’t available in the Boston Red Sox bullpen, Tim Wakefield did his best to keep the Tigers at bay and the offense helped him out as well as the Red Sox beat Detroit 5-0 in front of 38,564 fans at Comerica Park. The win for the ...

Sorry for the delay. I got caught up watching White Men Can’t Jump. Curt Schilling made his first throws of the season today during his rehab. Who Is Detroit Tigers OF Matt Joyce?
2008-05-06 17:48:00
The Detroit Tigers shook-up their line-up yesterday be designating LF Jacques Jones for assignment, installing Gary Sheffield in LF and recalling OF Matt Joyce from AAA Toledo.  Given the impression the Tigers emptied their farm system to acquire Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, I was unfamilar with Matt Joyce as a prospect.  As a result, I went to my Baseball America and John Sickels prospect handbooks to read-up on Joyce. My memory was jogged looking at Joyce's 2007 K/BB ratio of 127:51.  With more than two Ks per walk at AA, I had decided he wasn't enough of a prospect for me to consider amongst the top 24 available in my draft.  However, a closer look shows he skipped High A and went right to AA.  This has given me pause. He has transitioned well to AAA this year batting 299/367/536 versus his AA slash stat line of 257/333/454.  His K/BB hasn't changed much, though, at 27:11.  I'm cautiously optimistic that he could provide some value i...

Miami, Florida. All-Star starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis of the Detroit Tigers has settled his criminal DUI charge resulting from an arrest back in December of 2006. This incident occurred when Dontrelle was pitching for the Florida Marlins. Detroit Tigers
2008-04-14 14:52:00
With yesterday's embarassing loss to the White Sox which dropped the team's record (and play-off aspirations!) to 2-10, fantasy players have to seriously reconsider whatever lofty expectations they had for this team's players. The obvious place to start is the starting rotation. When a team is expected to win 95+, there starting pitchers are always good for 12-15 Wins as long as their ratios are close to leagu-average. It is the Wins that make the average ratios palatable. If the Tigers are an 84 Win team (82-68 from this day forward .547 W%)), then who wants Nate Robertson or Kenny Rogers or Dontrelle Willis? How about gambling Jeremy Bonderman finally has a great season? No one.
Red Sox Walk Past Tigers 12-6
2008-04-11 05:44:00
Last night, it was the wildness of the Boston Red Sox pitching staff. Tonight, it was the wildness of the Detroit Tigers pitching as the Red Sox made the most of their opportunities handed to them by the Tigers in a 12-6 win in front of 37, 612 at Fenway Park. The win evens up ...

Tigers Get First Win Against Red Sox
2008-04-10 05:45:00
One things for certain, the Tigers won’t lose 162 games this season as a bad night from the Red Sox pitching staff did them in in a 7-2 loss in front of packed house at the Fens. It was the 390th straight sellout. The entire pitching staff was brutal tonight. A combined 8 walks between them ...

This Detroit-Tigers-sucking shit is getting old
2008-04-09 11:10:00
My suck-ass Bloggers League team dropped another nine points yesterday. I now sit 13 points behind the team in 11th, good for the biggest points gap in the standings. Monday, I blamed some early pitching disasters, but now I've decided it's all Miguel Cabrera and Edgar Renteria's fault. Cabrera's batting average is down to .100 and he's still stuck on that one measly RBI he picked up with an Opening Day home run. Renteria's hitting .200 and has yet to score. How can I compete with my number-one draft pick and starting shortstop showing this level of ineptitude? Jim Leyland already knows the answer -- I CAN'T.

With 0-6 start, Detroit Tigers back to the bad old days
2008-04-07 21:47:00
The Detroit Tigers wanted to evoke memories - of 1968 and 1984, not 2003. They added Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis during the offseason and boosted their payroll to $138.7 million, second only to the New York Yankees. And what did that get them? An 0-6 start, the worst since they dropped their first nine games in ...

Slumping Detroit Tigers fall to 0-6 after 13-2 loss to the Chicago White So
2008-04-07 11:30:00
This is not exactly the start the big-budget Detroit Tigers imagined. Nick Swisher homered on the game’s second pitch, Carlos Quentin had four RBIs and the Chicago White Sox routed slumping Detroit 13-2 on Sunday night. The 0-6 Tigers are the majors’ only winless team. MLB Predictions: American League
2008-03-31 05:01:00
East1. Boston Red Sox 2. New York Yankees3. Toronto Blue Jays4. Tampa Bay Devil Rays5. Baltimore OriolesThe Red Sox should be one of the top teams in the MLB. They still have a dominant line up with David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Mike Lowell, plus Jacoby Ellsbury will be a great leadoff man. The starting pitching rotation is solid with Josh Beckett and Jon Lester leading the way and the bullpen remains one of the best with Jon Papelbon and Hideki Okajima. The Yankees will obviously fight for the top of the division but their pitching staff isn't that strong. Also, watch out for the Blue Jays they may finally get into the playoffs if they stay healthy.Central1. Detroit Tigers2. Cleveland Indians3. Chicago White Sox4. Minnesota Twins5. Kansas City RoyalsThe Tigers have a very potent offense with Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, and Miguel Cabrera. They should have no problem putting up runs. The pitching staff is even better now with the addition of Dontrelle Willis. I don't know how m...
