Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has pleaded guilty, ending a nearly eight month drama that has transfixed the region, paralyzed much of city business and halted a political career that once held such promise. The deal calls for Kilpatrick to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice by committing perjury, agreeing to serve four months in jail, pay up to $1 million in restitution, and serve five years' probation. He also agreed not to run for office during that five-year span. The mayor will turn over his state pension to the City of Detroit, which paid $8.4 million to settle two whistle-blower lawsuits three former cops filed against the city. Only minutes earlier, the mayor offered an apology to the court, telling District Court Judge Ronald Giles that for seven months, "I've been living in an incredible state of pressure and scrutiny." But Giles sent the mayor to jail anyway, telling him he would have given any defendant the same treatment. "What matters to me though is how the court overall is perceived and how if it was not Kwame Kilpatrick sitting in that seat, if it was John Six-Pack sitting in that seat, what would I do? And that answer is simple," he said. Circuit Court Judge Thomas E. 2008-07-23 15:26:00 Yep, it happened again. Another brawl at the Palace, only this time it's a WNBA brawl. If you haven't seen it already, here's a video of the fight and some breakdowns of what happened:This is, of course, terrible for not just the WNBA, but also the NBA (the NBA is already considered somewhat dirty and it could be leaking over into the WNBA). When the best player in your league, Candace Parker, is involved, it becomes tough to suspend her and still have a well represented league. I don't know much about the WNBA, but if this begins a trend, they will have to take action.I would suspend Parker 10 games. I know there will be plenty of other suspensions also. Rick Mahorn claims he didn't push Lisa Leslie, but it certainly looks like he did. It's a big mess; we'll just have to wait for the league to dole out suspensions.

Touted by a to-be-unnamed ESPN analyst as having the best offense in baseball history, the Tigers have faltered in 2008. They're 23-31, good for fourth place in the AL Central. The topic was brought up at this week's Mackinac Policy Conference — a meeting of several of Michigan's top businesspeople — but it looks as though the proposal has lost momentum. Organizers of the Detroit show say they will push legislation "within 30 days," but there is no guarantee for the approval of the plan, especially considering Michigan's economic state. If the Cobo expansion is not approved, the show will likely take one of two directions. The first option is to sell the title "North American International Auto Show" to the Chicago show, according to The Detroit News.
