Helen was 8 years old in this photograph.Helen Keller became blind and deaf after an illness when she was 1 1/2 years old. Her teacher, Anne Sullivan, began instructing Helen how to communicate by making symbols in her hand. The first word Helen learned to say was "Doll".Helen went from an angry and frustrated little girl to a world famous author and historian. Anne Sullivan stayed by Helen's side until she died in 1936. The bands dream pop meets shoe gazer style has drawn strong comparisons to Nico and Mazzy Star.In 2006 Pitchfork named their debut the 16th best album of the year. Devotion has already garnered significant press but I don't really see why. With the exception of the album opener "Wedding Bell" and the clavase-percussioned "Holy Dances" the album is a gray tapestry that blends into one long dismal song.The band clearly doesn't need my approval, Pitchfork will probably hand them over another top 20 album of the year honor. Right now I?m working on an edit of a section of my PhD thesis exploring issues of early Marian cult and devotion. One of the more interesting elements that is emerging is that late antique bishops and theologians were sometimes anxious about the consequences of the devotional practices of people. The author of the Martyrdom of Polycarp (2nd century) for example makes it a point to instruct the reader in the appropriate attitude to have toward the martyrs.
