Treatment for Diabetes and Depression Improves Both, Researchers Say
2012-01-20 16:40:00
Patients simultaneously treated for both Type 2 diabetes and depression improve medication compliance and significantly improve blood sugar and depression levels compared to patients receiving usual care, according to a new study by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Of patients receiving integrated care combined with a brief period of intervention to assist with adherence to prescribed medication regimens, more than 60 percent had improved blood sugar test results and 58 percent had reduced depression symptoms, compared to only 36 percent and 31 percent, respectively, of patients receiving usual care. The full results of the study are published in the January/February issue of The Annals of Family Medicine. There is a link between depression and diabetes - as depression is a risk factor for diabetes, diabetes also increases the risk for the onset of depression. Not only is depression common in patients with diabetes, but it also ...

Guest Post - 3 Tips for Holiday Meal Planning with Diabetes
2011-12-14 05:15:00
Here's a very helpful post for you this season by Carolyn:Two years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I was only 35 then, and it was a major wake up call. I realized I needed to dramatically change my eating habits and eat right for my body. Since then, I’ve done a pretty good job eating healthy. I plan out all of my meals ahead of time to make sure I get all of the vitamins and minerals I need from the food I eat. I’ve had a lot of success using a meal planner template, and doing so has allowed me not only to improve my health but also to lose weight. Unfortunately, I always feel as though I have my food intake under control until the holidays. During the holiday season, I find it very challenging to eat as healthy as I should and stick to my meal plans. Other people with diabetes I have talked to have this same problem. Here are some ways I keep my eating under control during the holiday season:1. I bring healthy food I know I like to holiday potlucks and dinner parti...

Being one to LOVE our cereal followed by our cereal milk, we kind of knew it, but this report by the Enviornmental Working Group solidifies the fact that most children's cereal contains a lot of sugar! It's not until it's contextualized with hightlight such as: "One serving of Honey Smacks has more sugar than a Twinkie." and... "One cup of any of 44 children?s cereals ? including Honey Nut Cheerios, Apple Jacks, and Cap?n Crunch ? contains more sugar than 3 Chips Ahoy! cookies." That one begins to realize the ramification of what this all means especially with childhood obesity...
Depression increases risk of dementia in patients with Type 2 diabetes
2011-12-06 03:11:00
Depression in patients with diabetes is associated with a substantively increased risk of development of dementia compared to those with diabetes alone, according to researchers from the University of Washington and Kaiser Permanente. The study, among the first (and largest to date) to examine all-cause dementia in diabetes patients with and without depression, appears on the current online issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. Patients with type 2 diabetes who also had depression had a doubling in risk of dementia during years 3 to 5 after initial screening, compared to patients with diabetes who did not have depression, said the study?s lead author Wayne Katon, MD, professor and vice chair of the University of Washington department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. This study was supported by the National Institutes of Health-funded Diabetes & Aging Study, which focuses on the special health problems of older patients with diabetes, and its parent study, Diabet...

In Florida, Taking a much needed break! Anyway, one day before my vacation, I was hanging out with a med student and a future med student talking about this blog and talking about the issues that I see right now with the lack of education of diabetes. They asked how long I've had it. Eighteen years. They asked why I started blogging and I said that I needed to start writing about what I know. This is something I know really well. Over drinks, they ended up telling me that I should be a doctor. I literally laughed in their faces. "There's a little test called...

New Drug Prevents Type 2 Diabetes
2011-03-29 15:54:00
Type II diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.  It is often referred to as noninsulin-dependent diabetes or adult onset diabetes.   On a fundamental level it is a deficiency in how your body makes or uses insulin.  This is problematic because the body needs insulin in order to move glucose into the body's cells.  Glucose is in almost everything we eat.  Once it is in the cells, it is stored and used for energy.  When a person has type II diabetes, the liver, muscle cells and fat of the body does not respond normal to insulin and therefore  insulin resistant. Despite the fact that the body does not metabolize sugar properly, type II diabetes is completely manageable.  According to...

Recognizing Hypoglycemia ? Low Blood Sugar
2010-09-20 09:43:00
Controlling blood sugar is important for diabetics. When well managed, a person with diabetes only need make a few changes to their lifestyle. But, when there are issues with fluctuating blood sugar levels, you could be at risk for complications like hypoglycemia. What is Hypoglycemia? Even people who have not been diagnosed as diabetic may get weak after exercise, or when they forget to eat. They may refer to this as ?hypoglycemia.? Although their blood sugar may be low, it may not necessarily be actual hypoglycemia. Healthy individuals may suffer from a true case of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, but when diabetes is also an issue, hypoglycemia is a very serious threat. Just like sugar in the blood can rise to high levels, blood sugar can also fall below the normal level. This is referred to as ?insulin shock? and can seriously affect those with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes who are both dependent and non-dependent on insulin. There are several reasons that the blood sugar ma...
Methods for Insulin Delivery
2010-09-08 01:00:00
As an essential hormone in the body, insulin is secreted to control the levels of sugar in the blood. When insulin is not produced in the body, a condition known as diabetes occurs.  People who have diabetes would have to inject themselves with insulin.  Now, there are several methods for delivery of insulin that give diabetics options. Insulin has peak times and a duration to consider. Peak time refers to the time when insulin becomes most effective in lowering blood sugar. Duration refers to how long the insulin will remain in your system after it is administered, continuing to do its job. For instance, a rapid acting form of insulin can take affect quickly, but may also last for another hour or two in the system. That is why the peak and duration is important when prescribing the type of insulin and the delivery system. Injecting Insulin This is the method most often used. It requires taking a certain dosage of insulin several times a day via a syringe and needle. Th...
Know Your A1C Numbers
2010-09-07 00:59:00
One goal of diabetes treatment is to get your blood sugar under control. Actually that is the foremost goal. When your blood sugar stays at manageable levels, then complications are are less of an issue. But, it takes time, as well as carefully following your doctor?s instructions to find the balance. One tool that doctors use is your A1C number. What does A1C mean? You might have heard this mentioned on commercials but weren?t sure how it correlated to diabetes. Here's a simple explanation. A glucose meter is used to determine your blood glucose level at any point throughout your day. This is important for treatment because these numbers can teach you where your diet is lacking when it comes to eating too many carbohydrates. When you are first learning to live with diabetes, it can be both frightening and confusing. You don?t realize how important the relationship is between glucose and insulin until your body can?t perform the job properly anymore. If you have been diagnosed w...
Insulin Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes
2010-09-07 00:58:00
People with Type 1 diabetes often do not make enough insulin naturally to deal with the sugar that is in their bloodstream. Several methods are used in diabetes treatment and management, one method which includes insulin therapy. What is Insulin? In the body, insulin is a naturally-occurring hormone. It is secreted by cells in the pancreas in response to blood sugar levels. When the body needs sugar for fuel, the insulin is secreted to carry the sugar to the cells. When there is more sugar than insulin, blood sugar levels can rise above normal. In people with Type 1 diabetes, there is a problem with the insulin production system. The body produces little or no insulin. That leaves the body vulnerable to the effects of high blood sugar; effects which may include nerve damage, eye damage, poor wound healing, and kidney damage. There are many manners in which medicinal insulin is obtained and many types of insulin. At first, insulin was obtained from animals and processed for admin...

Diabetes May Double in 25 Years

According to ABC News, "One factor driving the soaring costs: the number of people living with diabetes for lengthy periods, the researchers said. Over time, the cost of caring for someone with diabetes tends to rise along with their risk for developing complications, such as end-stage renal disease, which requires dialysis."Are you thinking what I'm thinking? It's a given almost that Obama/DemoCare will bring down costs because of its focus on "prevention." That is, prevent a disease from striking so that you don't incur those big doctor, hospital and other costs down the road. This study basically says the opposite: Catching and treating diabetes early on may not be so cost-effective because later on you'll incur a lot more expenses. Natural Cures to Treat Diabetes
2009-09-18 06:01:00
Diabetes is usually caused because of lack of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps us to derive energy from foods. We may eat lots of foods, but since our body is deficient in insulin, these foods never add to our nutrition and we don't derive any energy from them. Physical stress, such as illness or injury, causes higher blood glucose levels in people with either type of diabetes. For some people with diabetes, controlling stress with relaxation therapy seems to help. It is more likely to help people with type 2 diabetes than people with type 1 diabetes. This difference makes sense. Stress blocks the body from releasing insulin in people with type 2 diabetes, so cutting stress may be more helpful for these people. People with type 1 diabetes don't make insulin, so stress reduction doesn't have this effect. Reducing stress can help people with type 1 diabetes take better care of themselves. Diet plays a significant role to get rid of diabetes. There are a variety...

Their findings, which are reported in this week's edition of the New England Journal (NEJM), identified seven chromosome regions which are shared between the two diseases. The research suggests that type 1 diabetes and celiac disease may be caused by common underlying mechanisms such as autoimmunity-related tissue damage and intolerance to dietary antigens (foreign substances which prompt an immune response)........
Possible Cure for Diabetes Found, Ignored by Big Pharma

Irving Weissman discovered a treatment 12 years ago that might have saved the lives of thousands of women with advanced breast cancer, but pharmaceutical companies weren’t interested in developing the therapy. Though that interest is finally being reignited, Weissman doesn’t pull any punches. “I hate to say I told you so,†he said.Weissman is a professor of pathology & developmental biology at Stanford University, spoke Wednesday & Thursday as part of the Columbia University Department of Religion’s Bampton Lecture series. The lecture series is modeled after a centuries-old Oxford series of the same name, & invites famous authorities in their respective fields to give talks on various issues of interest to the religious community. In Wednesday’s lecture, Weissman laid out the conceptual foundation of his work—that stem cells are rare, self-renewing, & can regenerate body tissues.
