Mesothelioma Diagnosis Guidelines Revealed by Panel
2009-09-18 18:22:00
Mesothelioma is a form of asbestos cancer that is linked with long term and high level exposure to asbestos, and it has a latency period of several decades, which means that the symptoms of the disease may not manifest for twenty to thirty years following the exposure. However, according to a recent report a team of ...

How many different thinking styles are there? That is, how many different ways are there for thinking through a problem? No one really knows for sure, but it's probably an infinite number. People use different skills, talents, ideals, knowledge, emotions, and past experiences in their approach to a problem. The same person may approach the same problem differently on a different day depending upon their current levels of patience, tolerance, fatigue and distractions. However, in medical school, we are all taught to think similarly in a systematic, orderly fashion. The reasons for this are obvious. Doctors need to have a logical approach so that no vital clue is overlooked and an accurate diagnosis is made as quickly as possible. Of course, physicians must individualize...
Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Possible With Synchrotron Light
2009-06-15 20:43:00
Why, you might wonder, can't doctors just take an MRI or CT scan of our brains and tell us whether we are at risk for Alzheimer's disease or not.  One simple answer is that the A? plaques that form in the brains of Alzheimer's patients are so small in the early stages of the disease that they can't be seen by current diagnostic methods.  But that may soon change with new x-ray techniques....
Bioengineering Student Discovers Key To Early Cancer Diagnosis
2009-06-11 05:28:00
Cancers that are detected early have the best chance of being cured but, until now, there were no methods of detecting cancer at its earliest stages.  Raj Krishnan, a PhD student in bioengineering at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), has created a technology for the early diagnosis of cancer, giving new hope and possibility to cures that have eluded cancer victims for years because their diagnoses were too late.

Why Dreams Are Valuable in Homeopathic Diagnosis and Treatment
2008-12-19 02:56:00
Homeopathic treatment begins with a thorough investigation into all aspects of the patient’s life. During the initial interview the homeopath routinely enquires about dreams (especially childhood dreams, memorable past dreams, recurrent dreams, and nightmares), because dreams have proven to be helpful clinical indicators in many patients’ cases. But dreams must be amongst the most contentious, mysterious, and thoroughly unobjective of phenomena! Why, then, are they nevertheless considered valuable in homeopathic diagnosis and treatment? In this article I will describe the ways in which dreams may be incorporated into the homeopathic diagnosis. Their value lies in their ability to reveal the true state of the patient and to point the way to a confident selection of homeopathic remedy. In a followup article I will further explain how changes in sleep and dreaming patterns are sensitive indicators of the progress of healing once treatment has begun. Dreams: Precious psyc...

POCD Versus Pedophilia - Differential Diagnosis
2008-09-04 04:00:00
Note: This is one of a number of posts I have written on mental illness. It deals with it from a diagnostic point of view that is probably most interesting to sufferers or clinicians, but may be interesting to laypeople. I've been studying abnormal psychology for 30 years now, and experiencing it for 25 or so. POCD is a subtype of OCD that is usually thought of as pure-O, or pure obsessional. Pure-O's do not have the usual behavioral rituals that the hand-washers, etc. have; instead, they have cognitive rituals. It is necessary that there be more documentation on this subtype of OCD because unfortunately, quite a few people are suffering from it, and clinicians barely even understand it.Due to this lack of understanding, clinicians think sufferers are psychotic or suffer from pedophilia. Many clinicians have a poor understanding of OCD as it is, and this series is intended to enlighten them about different forms that the illness can take.I've written some stuff on POCD on this bl...
Diagnosis Research
2008-08-05 20:01:00
At a hospital appointment last week, I received a diagnosis of sensorimotor axonal neuropathy. Possible causes they are looking at are medication-related, coeliac disease, and vasculitis. We know that I don't have diabetes or alcoholism, which are the most common causes. So, of course, I'm doing all the googling. Amongst others, I have learned these two things:1) With exception of the Roman Catholic Church, most mainline Christian churches offer their communicants gluten-free alternatives to the sacramental bread, usually in the form of a rice-based cracker or gluten-free bread. These include United Methodist, Christian Reformed, Episcopal, Lutheran, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and many others.Roman Catholic doctrine states that for a valid Eucharist the bread must be made from wheat. ... On August 22, 1994, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith apparently barred coeliacs from ordination, stating, "Given the centrality of the celebration of the Eucha...

Case of a Sexually Abused Woman Who Hates Herself (3): Diagnosis and Prescr
2008-05-06 18:37:00
This is Part 3 of the series begun with the case of Janice, a sexually abused woman (Part 1) and continued with my homeopathic case analysis of her case (Part 2). Today I will complete the case analysis by completing the diagnosis and revealing the prescription that Janice received, and in subsequent articles I will present her progress over time. The case history and analysis are summarized below, or you may review them by following the links above. Review of the case and analysis thus far Janice grew up with a cold, uncaring mother. Craving love, she accepted her father’s perverted attention which was lavished in the form of ongoing sexual abuse. The need for attention through sexuality combined with a tempestuous character (which may have been caused by, or pre-existed, the abuse), resulting in great anger toward those who had hurt her. Her violent, revengeful thoughts occasionally resulted in outbursts of violence, but most of the time these were directed against herse...
Diagnosis of exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
2008-05-03 19:10:00
Your veterinarian will examine the pet for the existence of the signs and symptoms of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. The diagnosis of the EPIis mainly depends on the symptoms of EPI evinced on the patients that include nausea, vomiting, steatorrhea (oily stools), intractable pain and involuntary weight loss. Pancreatic biopsy only confirms the EPI. Though, indirect tests ...

And we have a tentative diagnosis
2008-04-30 06:01:00
How did today go? I am not sure. I am still processing my feelings, my worries, my thoughts. No one ever wants anything to be wrong with their child. Everyone always wants the best possible outcome.A polyp or a hemorrhoid would have fallen into this category. Something little. Something that can be fixed. Something that is not chronic. The other end of the spectrum included things I couldn't pronounce. Along with celiac disease. Crohn's disease. Possibly even cancer. I can be thankful that was not the diagnosis. In so far as we have a diagnosis. The doctor won't commit to it until the biopsies come back.I awoke this morning to find that my blog was down. Nothing I could do about that, but I really didn't care that much. I was a little nervous and expended a little of that nervous energy scanning a couple of forums but I couldn't concentrate enough to really read anything. I was nervous and excited. Finally, hopefully, I would know what was wrong with my little gir...

Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care 4th Edition 2007
2008-04-18 17:11:00
Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care 4th Edition 2007 by R. Douglas Collins have twofold. The first part of the mission is to provide a quick reference for the busy physician who needs a list of common diseases that will explain the patient's symptoms and signs. To accomplish this, the author has listed symptoms and signs alphabetically so that they can be found without searching through the index. Then, as the clinician locates the symptoms and signs, he will find an illustration of the differential diagnosis for the symptom or sign. Also, in most cases, he will find a table listing many diseases that should be considered in the differential. Then, in the text associated with each symptom and sign, the clinician will find the laboratory tests and other diagnostic procedures that will be included in the workup of that symptom and sign. In the appendix, he will find the workup of specific diseases in the differential. The clinician can sharpen his skills by reading the case histor...

Fragile X and company: Finding the right diagnosis

Definition of Advanced paternal ageAdvanced paternal age: A man who is age 40 years or older at the time of conception. (There is no universally accepted definition of advanced paternal age but this criterion is often used in genetic counseling.) Advanced paternal age is associated with an increased risk of new mutations in the offspring. This risk for genetic defects does not increase dramatically at age 40, but rather increases linearly with the age of the father. The risk of genetic defects due to new dominant mutations is 4 to 5 times greater for fathers aged 45 and above than for men in their early twenties. There are two types of paternal age effects. One relates to the autosomes and the other to the X chromosome. New autosomalmutations for dominant conditions show up in the children. Their diseases are due directly to advanced paternal age. New mutations on the X chromosome are usually not evident in the children. They are transmitted to daughters who are at risk for having s...

Lung Cancer - Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Care
2008-03-23 19:12:00
In the UK 38,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. There are two types of lung cancer; small cell which occurs in 20% of cases and non-small cell which occurs in 80% of cases. Small cell lung cancer is the most dangerous as it travels through to other parts of the body early on and can get into the bloodstream or lymph system quite quickly. Non small cell lung cancer travels more slowly and if caught early can be successfully cured.Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer although 10% of people with the disease have never smoked. The risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked and the age of the smoker. If a person stops smoking the risks reduce quickly and after 15 years the chances of developing lung cancer are the same as a non-smoker. Breathing in other people's cigarette smoke, known as passive smoking, increases the chances of getting lung cancer but the risks are far less than if you smoke yourself. Those who smoke cigars, pipes or cann...

Stomach Cancer: Causes and Diagnosis
2008-03-21 15:45:00
There are several causes of stomach cancer. To name a few are previous exposure to radiation, bacterial infection caused by Helicobacter pylori, pernicious anemia, stomach surgery, as well as genetic factors that cause predisposition to the disease. Helicobacter pylori infections now thought to be responsible for most cases of stomach cancer involving the bottom half of the stomach. Stomach cancer near the junction between the esophagus and the stomach is not usually related to Helicobacter pylori infection.Stomach cancer is a very serious condition. Symptoms usually arise later due to the large capacity of the stomach and often the tumor is not curable at the time of diagnosis. It is for this reason that the mortality rate for patients diagnosed with stomach cancer is exceedingly high. In the Far East, the incidence of stomach cancer remains high, probably due to the high rate of Helicobacter pylori infection, as well as certain dietary factors. Nobody knows for sure why the incide...
