What the Dickens?
2008-05-21 02:02:00 The Tower of London, 10th of April in the year of Our Lord 1857 This document is being written in the hope that it might be smuggled out of this wretched place and its contents disseminated, so that I may be freed and my name cleared. At the very least, I hope that my family and all the Dickkens to follow will know the truth about me. My name is Charles Dickkens, and I am the proud bearer of my family name.I am a writer who only seeks to document the truth and wishes to bring to light social injustice and the miseries of my times. My story is a simple one. My start in life is simple and my fall from grace simpler still. For I was no match for that devil called Lord Likely. Pray, dear reader, for I believe you to be a person of kind heart and trustful disposition, and I rely on your magnitude of heart to look charitably on this state of opprobrium. So let us begin. I, Charles Dickkens was born at an early age, and after a period of time spent as an apprentice nutmeg mender, I slowly...

First Edition Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" to be auctioned off
2008-03-30 17:14:00 An excerpt from the news article:"In their upcoming Rare Book auction, Heritage Auction Galleries will offer a scarce first edition, first issue copy of Charles Dickens' immortal novel, A Christmas Carol, in exceptional condition, estimated to bring $40,000 to $50,000."One of the most widely beloved Christmas stories ever written, it would be hard to overstate the importance of this well-known classic," said James Gannon, Director of Rare Book auctions for Dallas-based Heritage. "Originally released on December 19, 1843, A Christmas Carol was an instant sensation, selling more than 6,000 copies in one week. Since then, the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his miraculous redemption has been adapted into nearly every media imaginable, making it an inseparable part of our modern Christmas traditions.""Although we tend to see the novel as a fairy tale today," Gannon said, "it was definitely intended as a strongly political work, written by Dickens to forcefully illustrate the ever-widenin...

The Best Charles Dickens Book
2008-03-10 15:13:00 I didn't know it was possible for a book to make me cry. Books, after all, are hardly immersive experiences. They don't engage your senses the way a movie, or a song, or a roller coaster does. Although you use your eyes when you read a book, it's not a visual onslaught the way a TV show or painting is. You can turn music up, as I do when I'm alone in the car, until it surrounds and envelopes you in a cocoon of waves. But books: you have to keep turning the pages and thinking about what you're reading. So I could never get into a book enough to have it work up real emotions.Until I read David Copperfield, that is.I've read a lot of Dickens' work -- Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, Bleak House (don't bother with that last one)-- but I had not gotten around to David Copperfield until I was in Morocco and ran out of things to read. I almost always have a book I'm reading, so even when I'm in a strange country eating sheep eyeballs and touring Jamaa E...

When it came, Scrooge bent down upon his knee; for in the very air through which this Spirit moved it seemed to scatter gloom and mystery. It was shrouded in a deep black garment, which concealed its head, its face, its form, and left nothing of it visible save one outstretched hand. But for this it would have been difficult to detach its figure from the night, and separate it from the darkness by which it was surrounded. He felt that it was tall and stately when it came beside him, and that its mysterious presence filled him with a solemn dread. Near to the winter fire sat a beautiful young girl, so like that last that Scrooge believed it was the same, until he saw her, now a comely matron, sitting opposite her daughter. The noise in this room was perfectly tumultuous, for there were more children there, than Scrooge in his agitated state of mind could count; and, unlike the celebrated herd in the poem, they were not forty children conducting themselves like one, but every child was conducting itself like forty. The consequences were uproarious beyond belief; but no one seemed to care; on the contrary, the mother and daughter laughed heartily, and enjoyed it very much; and the latter, soon beginning to ming...

He was endeavouring to pierce the darkness with his ferret eyes, when the chimes of a neighbouring church struck the four quarters. So he listened for the hour.To his great astonishment the heavy bell went on from six to seven, and from seven to eight, and regularly up to twelve; then stopped. Twelve. It was past two when he went to bed. The clock was wrong. An icicle must have got into the works. Twelve. He touched the spring of his repeater, to correct this most preposterous clock. Its rapid little pulse beat twelve: and stopped. "Why, it isn't possible," said Scrooge, "that I can have slept through a whole day an...

"And travelling all the time!""The whole time," said the Ghost. "No rest, no peace. Incessant torture of remorse.""You travel fast?" said Scrooge."On the wings of the wind," replied the Ghost."You might have got over a great quantity of ground in seven years," said Scrooge. The Ghost, on hearing this, set up another cry, and clanked its chain so hideously in the dead silence of the night, that t...

But he put his hand upon the key he had relinquished, turned it sturdily, walked in, and lighted his candle. He did pause, with a moment's irresolution, before he shut the door; and he did look cautiously behind it first, as if he half-expected to be terrified with the sight of Marley's pigtail sticking out into the hall. But there was nothing on the back of the door, except the screws and nuts that held the knocker on, so he said "Pooh, pooh!" and closed it with a bang. The sound resounded through the house like thunder. Every room above, and every cask in the wine-merchant's cellars below, appeared to have a separate peal of echoes of its own....

In easey state upon this couch, there sat a jolly Giant, glorious to see; who bore a glowing torch, in shape not unlike Plenty's horn, and held up, high up, to shed its light on Scrooge, as he came peeping round the door."A Christmas Punch recipeby Charles Dickens (from an 1847 letter written by Dickens)"Peel into a very common basin (which may be broken in case of accident, without damage to the owner's peace or pock...

Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" part two
2007-11-10 14:58:00 If you haven't seen the current theater version of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" on stage, check it out if you can. It's going to be at the Hartford Stage from November 23rd through December 29th this year. I've seen it, and it's wonderful. The show is on a round stage, and between carol singing and very good acting, it's the ultimate holiday experience. Here is the second part of my twelve part adaptation of the literary classic, "A Christmas Carol": He had so heated himself with rapid walking in the fog and frost, this nephew of Scrooge's, that he was all in a glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled, and his breath smoked again. "Christmas a humbug, uncle!" said Scrooge's nephew. "You don't mean that, I am sure." "I do," said Scrooge. "Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry? What reason have you to be merry? You're poor enough." "Come, then," returned the nephew gaily. "What right have you to be dismal? What...

These lines form the crux of the novel. The author paints a picture of life in England and France. Scholars have found this novel as the least Dickensian of all his novels. Ever since its publication the book has attracted mixed opinions. Nevertheless, the novel has been a widely read one.An endea...

A Dickens of a good find at a local flea market!
2007-07-31 01:50:00 This past Saturday I was browsing a flea market while my wife was getting her hair done. There was a little Christmas shop inside the flea market. Of course, I asked the proprietor if she had any village buildings by Department56. She said yes, and showed me three older pieces from Dickens' Village. There was "M Fezziwig Warehouse", "The Flat of Ebenezer Scrooge" and "Old Curiosity Shop".I don't collect Dickens, but I know that is what I wanted to give my brother and sister-in-law for Christmas. Perfect. I asked her if the lighting worked, and she tested each, and showed me all sides of each building. They were perfect. I was so excited. It was a very good deal, right? It's funny, because before I chose Snow Village, I was going to choose Dickens for my christmas village, basically because I've always loved the movies, including every single remake. These pieces may end up at my office - which I have dubbed "The island of misfit pieces" -- it's where all of my buildings that don...
