Many of us - especially those who work in the wishy-washy world of social media - use words which are cobbled together from others and which we have either ourselves made up or are dreamed up by our peers and contemporaries. I’m often surprised at what words don’t make it in to common spell checkers: words like blogging, podcasting and even the universally accepted online (as apposed to the original hyphenated version). When I use a new piece of software that comes bundled with its own spell checker, I don’t get very far before I’m adding lots of words into the software’s dictionary (even after changing the language from American to English and replacing all the auto-corrected Zs with Ss). I’m finding recently that I let a lot more words slip through the net when faced with the choice to add or ignore an ostensive misspelling, so words like Stef’s gobbledygeek or Stephen Fry’s blessay are being added and accepted into my own personal lexicon. You can have a lot of ...

Twenty-seven dictionaries
2007-09-08 22:42:00
I’ve always known that I owned a lot of dictionaries but until today I’ve never actually sat down and counted them. In total I have 27 including the 2 thesauri and my wife has another dozen of her own. That’s a lot of dictionaries.Neither my father nor my mother to the best of my knowledge ever owned or even read a novel. My mother in the years leading up to her death would pick up the odd woman’s magazine from a second-hand shop but even those she only skimmed. My father bought books by mail order, self-help books mainly but we also ended up with four sets of encyclopaedias, The New Universal Dictionary and Hartrampf’s Vocabulary Builder and I owe a great deal to both of these two excellent books which I sat and read like novels. It puzzles me that it took so many years for it to dawn on me that I was a writer; words always fascinated me. I remember seeing a copy of the complete Oxford English Dictionary at school (all twenty volumes of it) once locked away where no one w...

NTC's Pocket Dictionary of Words and Phrases
2007-08-16 14:24:00
Editor-in-Chief: Richard A. Spears (McGraw-Hill) "NTC?s Pocket Dictionary of Words and Phrases is for persons who are seeking to improve their ability to speak, read, write, and understand American English. It is a small, portable dictionary that will help learners with spelling, pronunciation, parts of speech, meaning, irregular forms, and the appropriate use of 12,000 common words and phrases. This dictionary defines words using the smallest possible vocabulary, but when it is necessary, additional words are used to define difficult concepts. In many cases, more than one definition is given, so the learner has additional help in figuring out the meaning of a word or expression. Phrases are entered in the dictionary in their normal alphabetical positions. Phrases are also indexed within the dictionary by means of cross-references. A cross-reference to each phrase is found at the entry of each non-initial, major word in the phrase. Thus, after account we find the cross-references: -...
