Right-Wing Conspiracies: Dancing With the Stars and Now... The Dictionary?
2010-11-15 23:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston The wild-eyed, conspiro-nuts of the far left have been waxing goofy over claims that there simply must be a vast right wing conspiracy because Palin moppet Bristol Palin continues to scoot by ad stay on the Dancing With the Stars show. Well, now I'd guess they have a new conspiracy to launch: the New Oxford American Dictionary has just named "refudiate" its word of the year. The left is all ready to call in Jesse Ventura and his TV crew of Conspiracy Theory on this one. After all, it must be a vast right-wing conspiracy if a real-life dictionary is to be seen giving such as Sarah Palin the benefit of its validation. ABC News reports:...

Online Oxford Dictionary – E-books Taking The Print Down?
2010-08-31 10:40:00 Language purists might want to take a deep breath before reading further. Publishers of THE Oxford English Dictionary have hinted that a print version of the latest edition will be “considered” only if there is sufficient demand at the time of publication. This comes at a time when everything online is gaining increasing acceptance from users worldwide, the dictionary being no exception. The online version of the Oxford English Dictionary gets almost 2 million hits every month from its subscribers compared to its printed compatriot which has sold about 300,000 sets in total since it was published in 1989. To be fair in comparison, the printed version is 20 volumes which by no means is convenient. The inconvenience can be seen in figures quoted by Nigel Portwood, chief executive of Oxford University Press, “The print dictionary market is just disappearing. It is falling away by tens of percent a year”. There is an underlying issue here and that is the significant shift the l...

How do you feel about the LBD? ...
The Dictionary Of CPS Terms
2010-06-21 17:46:00 Mondays are hard. Especially after a weekend like that one. To ease into the week let's put together a little dictionary of CPS terms and acronyms so that people have a place they can find or ask about various terms.Once it's done I'll post it on the front page so that it's always handy for newcomers, parents, and folks looking to move to Chicago. Here's how it works: You can can put in a term or acronym and provide the definition yourself (ie, "CCSR is the Chicago Consortium on School Research at the University of Chicago"), or you can ask "What is an LSC?" and someone else will write in the answer. Yes, slang and satirical terms like "Culture Of...

Now Google Is Also A Dictionary
2009-12-07 08:37:00 The Google search engine is not just about finding information from other websites. One of the most valuable aspects of Google search is its ability to offer a wide range of information like exchange rates, stock quotes, movie timings, dictionary lookup, synonym search etc. from the website’s search results page itself. There are nearly 22 such special features that Google offers apart from the actual search function. One of the most popular among them, synonym search has now been given a major face-lift as Google has quietly rolled out the new Google.com/dictionary page. This is a significant improvement from what existed previously. In the earlier version, searching for specific words on Google search offered you a link to the word’s definition from Answers.com on the top right corner of the search results. Now, you are instead shown the link to Google’s dictionary page for the corresponding word. The new Google dictionary offers you synonyms in 22 different lan...

A Medical Dictionary...of Sorts
2009-09-18 03:46:00 My paperback medical dictionary was a trusty companion during my first two years of medical school. I couldn't understand half of what the instructors were saying unless I looked up the word. "Erythematous" sounds intriguing until you learn it simply means "reddened." Such is learning the language of medicine. Mark Twain once said that the difference between the right word and the almost right word is like the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. We know immediately what "diffuse erythematous papular rash" means, but it takes longer to explain it in plain English: "a rash of small red bumps that is spread all over the body." As much as we try to speak to our patients in plain English, we can't help it when...

Use Google or MS Word as Dictionary
2008-05-11 07:41:00 Sometimes when you don’t even know how to spell a word, Google and MS word come into play. This is what I usually do. Although the best dictionary WordWeb has a suggestion capability but usually it doesn’t do a very good job.Let’s take a look at spelling a word “Gentlemen” and I don’t know how to spell it and I spell it as “Gentalment”. In MS Word I can right click the word and it shows me the suggested correct spelling. To check the meaning of the world I can just press “Shift + F7” but usually this MS Word dictionary sucks. To check the meaning, I would suggest to use WordWeb.Another method is using the Google Search Engine (my preferable choice) but only if you have the access to the internet. It comes out something like below “Did you mean: gentlement’s”When you click on it, it comes out the Wikipedia’s definition. However, I do not really like Wikipedia’s definition too. The explanation is just too long for me. So I would still prefer to use the W...
