Ford truck diesel engine supplier to idle plant
2008-05-24 00:43:00 Ford truck diesel engine supplier to idle plant The Indianapolis-based International Truck and Engine Corp. plant that supplies diesel engines for Ford's F-250, F-350 and F-450 and Super Duty truck will temporarily close, due to the automaker scaling back production of the full-size trucks. Yesterday, Ford announced even more cuts, though those did not have any bearing on the engine supplier's closure, which starts today. The supplier was already due to close for maintenance in the first two weeks of July, according to company spokesperson Roy Wiley in an Automotive News report. While it's not known if the supplier will take the time to perform the maintenance now and remain open in July, it is doubtful, as the decision would be a last-minute one. The plant supplies Ford's Louisville, Kentucky truck plant, which builds the F-series pickup trucks.
One-Cylinder Diesel Engine
2008-05-21 16:57:00 Question: Why doesn't a one-cylinder, four-cycle, Diesel engine stall? Does the momentum of a flywheel keep it running? Intake air is compressed to 435-600 psi before diesel fuel is injected for the power stroke. Although initial power stroke pressures are 1100-1370 psi, the mean effective pressures

The Evolution of the Diesel Engine
2008-04-04 18:36:00 The talk about finding new alternative energy sources for our cars is not new. In fact, scientists and car engineers had begun finding ways to either use energy sources, or to optimize existing engine solutions back in the 1970's. People saw that big engines were very inefficient and they started looking for new solutions. The answer to the large gasoline engines were rather small, turbo powered diesel engines. Until then diesel engines have been used mainly on heavy-duty machinery and large trucks, but scientists began to install them on small cars for their fuel efficiency and cost savings. Diesels are still considered by some people as noisy, unreliable and expensive to maintain, but things have evolved greatly since the early days of the diesel engine. General Motors was among the first companies to fit diesel engines to cars like Chevrolet Caprice and the Oldsmobile, but these engines were shaky and very unreliable. GM soon admitted they had been doing things wrong and re-f...

Jeep Performance to offer diesel engine swap for Wrangler
2008-03-14 00:59:00 Jeep Performance to offer diesel engine swap for Wrangler While Chrysler's Jeep brand is one of the few marques to offer a diesel option in the U.S. — the last generation Liberty was available with an oil burner, as is the current Grand Cherokee — the Jeep Wrangler has never beer offered with a diesel option. But for those who crave a diesel option in the Wrangler for low-RPM torque, the wait is almost over. Sort of. According to 4Wheel Drive & Sport Utility Magazine, Jeep Performance — a division of Mopar — will soon begin offering a diesel engine swap kit for the Jeep Wrangler. The kit will reportedly use the same four-cylinder 2.8L unit that was used in the Liberty CRD — which was rated at 160 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque — and will come with its own wiring kit. In addition to more oomph down low, the 2.8L diesel unit also promises increased fuel economy — in the Liberty CRD it returned 21/26 mpg city/highway. If th...

Fiat releases new 1.6 diesel engine
2008-01-28 03:01:00 Until now, Fiat had only two diesel engine sizes for diesel cars: 1.3 and 1.9-liter. In order to "fill the gap" between the two, the automaker has released a new 1.6-liter engine that can be ordered in 105 and 120 HP versions. Fiat's Lorenzo Sistino states, "This new generation of diesel engines is suitable for the newest CO2-based tax schemes which are being implemented around Europe".The engine has the same horsepower as the 1.9-liter units, yet they deliver the same performance with less consumption. Fiat claims an eight percent drop. The 105 HP version is capable of using just 4.9 liters every 100 km (which is 48 mpg), which is even improved in the "eco" versions to 4.5 l/100 km (52 mpg) and 119 g of CO2 per km. Although at launch the engine will only be fitted with a 6-gear stick, Fiat is getting double-clutch transmissions in May, called Dual Logic. A DPF (diesel particulate filter) is standard for the 120 HP version and optional for the 105 HP one.Fiat also claims that servi...
Major recall by Mercedes-Benz USA - diesel engine problems
2008-01-19 23:21:00 What's happening at Mercedes? First, their initial diesel engines didn't pass the emission standards in all the 50 states and now, they have just issued a major recall for 9004 cars. The problem: apparently it lies in a crankshaft sensor that can fail, which causes the engine to lose power and causes your vehicle to stop running. Our suggestion: get it fixed ASAP. The recall affects 2007 E320 Bluetec, ML320 CDI, and GL320 CDI models. I am really hoping that BMW will not have all these problems when they will launch the 335d and the X5d in the States, later this year.

Ford Kuga to be offered only with one diesel engine
2007-09-28 02:36:00 "We know the Kuga will be a strong user-chooser product and we have made a conscious, strategic decision to have one body style, one engine (the 136PS, 2.0-litre TDCi) and the single six-speed manual transmission."Kuga will be available only in two trim levels: Zetec and Titanium, and this is a very strange decision if we were to consider that it’s competitors will be available in many different choices. It will also be built only in 6000 to 8000 units a year.

Biodiesel Fuel and Your Diesel Engine
2007-09-20 19:29:00 By : Joseph ThenBiodiesel fuel is not compatible with every diesel engine. This is why it is so important for you to check your Owner's Engine Manual to find out what types of fuels you can use. The biggest drawback of biodiesel is that it is not compatible with all engine components. However many manufacturers such as Ford and Volkswagen have or are in the process of creating a diesel car or diesel engine more compatible with low sulfur diesel fuels. The main problem arises when you try to put biodiesel fuel into the diesel engine of older machines. Even blended biodiesel will soften and degrade certain types of elastomers and natural rubber compounds in you diesel engine over time. Undiluted biodiesel can destroy certain types of gasket, hose, and seal compounds like natural rubber, Buna-N, and nitrile, which can create fuel system leaks. Unfortunately these materials are what most fuel hoses and fuel pump seals are made of. Most manufacturers recommend that natural or butyl r...

Nissan may build diesel engines in US and add a four cylinder
2007-09-17 02:26:00 The new diesel V-6 that Nissan will be installing the 2010 Maxima could end up being built in the US if Japanese press reports are accurate. The engines could be sourced from Nissan's engine plant in Decherd, Tennessee although Nissan is calling the report only speculation at this point. In addition to the Maxima V-6 a four-cylinder diesel may be added to the Altima. Currently Nissan's only hybrid is the Altima which uses technology sourced from Toyota although an in-house developed system is due around the same time as the diesels. Whether Nissan will continue with the hybrid development is unknown. [Source: Winding Road]
Take a look at the new Triketec X2 Arrow, with optional diesel engine
2007-09-16 23:05:00 Vehicles with three wheels have the unenviable reputation of being inherently unstable. This reputation was earned by the Honda ATCs from long ago, which had two wheels in the rear and one wheel up front. This design is not as stable as having two wheels in the front. Because vehicles are generally moving forward, the single front wheel makes an excellent pivot, allowing the vehicle to tip over easily. It is easier to design that type of vehicle, though, because the steering mechanism can be very much like what is already available for motorcycles. That's why I was surprised to see this design from Triketec. We showed you a similar concept a while back called the Stallion. While I'm glad to see that the Triketec X2 Arrow is not considered a performance vehicle because of the design limitations, the vehicle is equipped with electronic aids in an attempt to keep all three wheels on the ground, which is good! Also, the wheelbase seems pretty long and the machine is probably pretty he...
