Branding in the Digital Age
2009-06-02 10:43:00
If this title makes you feel like you?ve just won a game of Jargon Bingo, you are not alone. Us Web types are quick to latch on to names for things ? Web 2.0 (and 3.0), LAS, ?The Online Conversation? ? and it?s easy to talk about a concept without really thinking about what it means. Most people, by now, understand that a brand is a sum of perceptions; what do you, your staff, your business partners and your customers think about you and what collective meaning is then ascribed. So, when you apply this to the digital or information age, what exactly are we talking about? I sought out the perspectives of people smarter than me ? Mr. Academic guy, Dave Duarte and Mr. Cutting Edge Branding Stuff guy, Matt Riley. Dave teaches at the UCT Graduate School of Business and founded Huddlemind ? a community of online learning. Matt is the guy behind Idea Bounty, our innovative crowdsourcing platform and is also a senior planner here at Quirk.
Wise Restraint in the Digital Age
2009-04-07 21:28:00
Josh Harris has adapted several verses of Scripture to press the important point of thinking before we speak, even via e-mail or Twitter.  Here’s an excerpt: This reminded me of James 1:19 that encourages us to be “slow to speak” in our conversations.  It got me thinking how certain passages of Scripture (with a few added ...

Educational Software--A Neglected Realm of the Digital Age
2008-08-06 15:35:00
Some years ago, a colleague--Laura Berlin--and I were attracted by the wealth of educational software programs that were appearing on the scene. To help parents make decisions in this area that was so new and unfamiliar, we wrote (for Microsoft), a book titled Parent's Guide to Educational Software. We were certain that this would be the beginning of burgeoning field.
Books Enter a New (Digital) Age

If you've picked up a student's backpack recently, its weight may well have surprised you. Those books can be incredibly heavy. Now, through the rise of e-textbook sales, that may change--lightening both the backpacks and the strain on pocketbooks. Sales of digital books for college students jumped almost 30% from 2006 to 2007.

The Cost of Words in Digital Age
2008-04-10 00:46:00
BY creating the digital world people did not only create an alternative space, but also an alternative scale of values. In this new dimention the values might be different, but the currencies are still the same. Sometimes the two worlds contradict each other, like in this recent case of Pizza.com domain. While in the real world $2.5 can get you the best slice of pizza in Downtown NYC, in the vir... [Original Post on MyItThings.com]

Brits Lack Trust in Digital Age
2008-02-04 20:28:00
Alarming levels of distrust emerging amidst UK's mobile users and their social networksLondon: Four in five UK internet users admit to feeling unsafe sharing their mobile phone number via the contact areas of social networking sites such as; Facebook, Bebo and MySpace. Nearly 80% of all respondents in a recent Mobyko.com survey stated they would not publicise their own number in this manner. The findings reveal the reason behind this growing trend of cautiousness - is the innate lack of trust relating specifically to the people within an individual's online social network.Julian Saunders, CEO of Mobyko.com said: "We know that people freely share their mobile numbers in the physical world. But, when it comes to doing so in the virtual world different factors come into play. It could be argued that the majority of people within our virtual communities are simply people we've either never met or perhaps just the once - and are not necessarily trusted acquaintances. This raises ...

In The Digital Age, The Sun Never Sets On The (Former) British Empire: Cana
2007-11-27 07:53:00
Or at least, it certainly feels like it.  In addition to last week?s UK government public relations fiasco with the two lost CDs?and the other post I had regarding a break-in into an Indian government military research lab, where three computers got stolen?there are reports from Canada that a consultant for the Provincial Public Health Laboratory (PHL) of Newfoundland and Labrador took home from a laboratory a laptop containing patient information, creating a data breach.  From the reports, it doesn?t sound as if the laptop was stolen from the consultant.  Rather, and this is freaky as hell, a security researcher called up the consultant in question at home, letting the consultant know that the researcher was able to access the data, via the consultant?s internet connection.  Can imagine?  You?re minding your own business, doing some government work when a guy calls in to let you know, ?I can see your data.?  It feels like the fourth sequel to I Know W...
The Timeline of The Digital Age Development
2007-11-16 09:23:00
Ever wonder how is the digital age ever started? It is all started way back on 1833 when Faraday did his experiment:May, 1833Work on semiconductors published by Michael Faraday.Michael Faraday found that the material's conductivity increased with temperature. This effect is typical of semiconductors the material of choice for the chip industry.8 October, 1926Julius Lilienfield patents a device that will become known as the transistor.December, 1943Colossus unveiled. The Colossus computer was built by British to crack the Lorenz code used by Hitler to encrypt messages to his generals.23 December, 1947Transistor invented.John Bardeen and Walter Brattain working under William Shockley show off the first transistor to bosses at Bell Labs New Jersey.16 November, 1953First computer based on transistor was built.Richard Grimsdale, Douglas Webb and Tom Kilburn did the prototype computer built with transistors. Connection and Disconnection in the Digital Age
2007-10-18 09:02:00
[Things influencing this post: David Warlick's K12Online Keynote Tom Hoffman's -- On Modernism The words of the students of SLA] For a bunch of years at Beacon, I taught a senior English class called "Connection and Disconnection in the 20th Century." It was a semester-long, reading intensive class that really was a survey of some of what I thought the major literary themes of the modernist and post-modernist movement were and are. The class was reasonably analog, and despite that, some of my favorite moments of classroom teaching happened there. This is one of the intro letters from the class: To the students of Connection and Disconnection in 20th Century Literature: The desire for connection, to our fellow humans, to a community, to a country, to a God, could be considered a basic human need. In the 20th century, as many of the traditional bonds changed at a speed never seen before, that sense of connection changed or was lost. Much of the literature of the modernist and...

Coleridge in the Digital Age: Cell Phone as Porlock
2007-08-23 23:47:00
Who's Porlock? Well, just about every literate person will recognize "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan, A stately pleasure-dome decree..." and most will have heard the story behind it. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was in an opium trance. He started writing that beautiful poem. Fifty-two equally splendid lines came forth- but Coleridge was interrupted by a knock on the door, from a "person on business from Porlock," according to Coleridge's notes...And by the time he got back to his poem, he had lost it - leaving us just the fragment. Some cynics claim that Coleridge made up the whole incident to explain his unfinished fragment - that there was no person from Porlock who interrupted him. Others, seeing some high moral ground in the story, accept it, and point to the pitfalls of drugs as its primary lesson. I don?t know whether the story is true or false. But it has always struck me as having a completely different lesson: the vulnerability of the creative impulse, indeed our thoughts at an...
Homo Zappiens - Growing up in A Digital Age
2007-06-21 10:54:00
Because we have two tweens in the house (8 and 9 yr olds), I have been reading a lot about tweens. I have been combing the internet on information on tweens. I have already started a folder titled tweens because I had been bookmarking many articles, blogs and websites on tweens. One of these days I would organize them into a blog of it's own. Through reading and observation, one striking fact about tweens is that they are very computer savvy. It's the age when their interest moves from traditional toys (like G.I. Joes and Barbies) to computers, video games and websites. If you're a parent of tweens...or an educator...I want to share this book ith you:The title of the book is Homo Zappiens: Growing up in a Digital Age. It's written by Wim Veen and Ben Vrakking.I was actually on the bookstore that day to buy a DVD that my boss asked me to purchase. While in the bookstore during an office errand, this book caught my eye. I browsed quickly and after browsing I knew I needed to buy t...
Professionalism in the Digital Age
2007-06-05 01:22:00
Many people speak of the importance of being professional in the business world but unfortunately, this subject is talked about more than practiced. Dictionary definitions speak of a professional as an individual that is an expert in his or her field but when it comes to the business world acting as a professional entails how someone presents oneself at work, among his colleagues, and with customers. And now in the digital era, we have to consider how we present ourselves on our website, in e-mail, and in our blogs. When you’re digital a lot of your personality can become lost. Whether you meant something as a joke, sarcastically, or with no harm at all can be misinterpreted when you’re online. This calls for caution when using bold, capital, or red letters in your correspondence and to read and reread your transmissions before you push send or publish. When you circulate something on the web it can be nearly impossible to remove what is published so you would want to be extra c...

Punctuation in Names Can Pose a Problem in the Digital Age
