Awards Galore For Asterisk and Digium
2008-04-18 13:13:00
We should not be surprised for Asterisk receiving awards but every time I see that Asterisk does, I smile with satisfaction. Everyone of us are aware that Asterisk not only gave us the best Open Source Telephony Solution, it also changed the market. I remember when we had to 5-6 figure costs for simple PBX and 5 figure cost for add on VoIP card for existing PBXs. But now those prices have come down drastically. I am sure Asterisk played a major part in making IP PBX, everybody's tool. Then the other side of it, the whole new industry and service that was build behind Asterisk to support, promote and extend Asterisk. As a whole these factors have made Asterisk a formidable force in the telecommunications arena. So these awards, valuable confirmations from those who sees the true value of Asterisk.Congratulations Asterisk!Following is a news release from Asterisk.Open source telephony industry leader recognized for technology innovation and quality HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—April 15, 2008...
Digium Founder Mark Spencer Recounts the History of Open Source Asterisk PB
2008-03-17 04:44:00
Asterisk is an open source private branch exchange (PBX) originally created by Mark Spencer of Digium. A PBX, is a type of phone switch, that allows multiple attached telephones to make calls to one another, and to connect to other telephone services including the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Not totally unlike routers that connect multiple computers to a network. As the guest speaker at the Triangle Linux Users Group (TriLUG) in Raleigh, NC on Thursday Mark recounted how he built the open source Asterisk project and the for-profit company Digium.
VoIPowering Your Office: Faxing With Zoiper; Digium Goes Insane
2008-02-20 09:03:00
Even though VoIP is one of newest, most revolutionary networking and telephony technologies, people still want faxing, only now they want to do it via IP. Which to me makes as much sense as demanding Morse code-enabled telephones. Me, I keep a plain old analog fax machine just to humor other people. Which is like heating bathwater on the stove even though we have modern plumbing and a water heater.

Are You SIPconnect Compliant ?
2007-11-21 19:52:00
This is something I wanted to post two months ago but some how skipped my mind. Following the tradition, better late than never, I will post it now. The SIP Forum, it's primary target of promoting SIP in the industry has members from 3COM to Wipro with names like Avaya, Cisco, Digium and Oracle (Just a few) in between. Anyone who is interested in SIP technology, industry recommendations for development of a SIP Phone, SIPit interoperability events and general promotion of SIP in the industry, may join and help to promote SIP. You will find the links at the end of the news release.SECAUCUS, N.J., Channel Partners Conference & Expo, September 26, 2007 ? The SIP Forum today announced the introduction of the SIPconnect Compliant program, a unique certification mark created to ensure interoperability among equipment manufacturers, software providers and service providers, as well as to promote further adoption of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as the standard for VoIP communicat...

VoIP Education and Training Needed for Sales People
2007-10-27 06:59:00
I know you can get training on Asterisk at Digium, where education material and courses are provided for technicians, developers and self learners like me. But I could not find any sales training. Perhaps I did not look hard enough.Shoretel gives training across the board and also sales training for channel partners. This trend goes to most of the companies that provide VoIP services and hardware. But does it applies to all companies? Do these companies like Vonage, Skype understand the value of educated sales people? I guess not. Although not something I really think about, a post by one my favorite bloggers got me thinking. Yes, a lot of people are ignorant when it comes to VoIP.Russell Shaw at ZDNet has put it out interestingly..."I have my own theory as to why this is. There?s plenty of vendor-supplied training and support from the H-P?s of the world. But to my knowledge, there aren?t alot of Vonage, Skype, Packet8, etc. support types offering sales clinics to Frys, MicroCenter...

2007-10-15 21:48:00
Digium, creator and maintainer of Asterisk, has moved to it's new campus and from a post on the Asterisk Blog, it seems Mark got one of the best views, if you happened to like trees! (who does not?).By the way Mark is looking for a power supply for his 286 (do you know what it is?) so he can complete his Guardian.Good Luck and Best Wishes to Digium Team!Tags: Asterisk, Digium
Microsoft, D-Link Dial for Dollars
2007-10-02 23:39:00
Microsoft and its hardware partners are speed-dialing their way into the small business voice-over-IP market. Quanta and D-Link, through partnerships with the software giant, intend to offer IP phone systems that cost about $5,500 for a 20-user deployment. Although The VAR Guy is bullish about the Asterisk open source telephony platform, there's something intriguing about Microsoft's VoIP relationship with D-Link.
Carrier-Class Echo Cancellation for Asterisk
2007-10-02 18:44:00
Digium, the Asterisk Company, announced at Astricon, a new Hardware module and a Software-based High Performance Echo Cancellation Solution for carrier-class voice networks to improve audio quality and reduce VoIP infrastructure costs. For Asterisk users that connect to the PSTN, the most common type of echo is hybrid echo - the echo introduced by the impedance mismatch between 2-wire and 4-wire telephone circuits. The echo manifests as a distorted and delayed reflection of the users voice while in conversation with an external party through the PSTN.The new Digium High Performance Echo Cancellation (HPEC) solutions eliminate the need for the tuning and training sometimes required to control echo conditions in Asterisk-based voice systems. The HPEC is G.168 compliant and "toll-quality" as determined by AT&T's Voice Quality Assessment Labs using a stringent series of subjective and standardized, objective tests. The Digium HPEC outperformed AT&T's benchmark lab echo cancell...
Digium 3COM partnership brings Asterisk to enterprise market
2007-10-02 17:25:00
On the heels of Switchvox acquisition and spreading Digium's market reach to many SMBs, Digium announced that it is signing a deal with 3COM, a network gear manufacturer, who itself was in a deal that sold itself last week. But Digium stand to gain from the 3COM deal. As thousands of 3COM dealers and resellers around the world. Also 3COM had a good history with VoIP IP Telephony. (A search on Google for this blogs name, "VoIP IP Telephony" brings 3COM just after me! )Now Asterisk stands just next to VCX, and NBX, well established telephony brands, at 3COM. I am happy to see "3COMAsterisk" proudly displayed first in the series of VoIP products offered by 3COM.3Com will sell Asterisk as its 30-and-under solution. That's because it is aiming it's own products (NBX, VCX) at the above-30-seat market. But Asterisk might replace now aging NBX gear. This deal makes Digium make it's strong hold on enterprise market stronger. 3COM already has a certain VoIP market segments covered. It al...
3Com (COMS) Is Dead, Long Live 3Com
2007-09-28 16:28:00
The 3Com Corp. you knew on September 27 is dead. A new 3Com is emerging, effective immediately. The former networking giant has been sold to affiliates of Bain Capital Partners for $2.2 billion in cash. The deal, pending regulatory approval, is long overdue, The VAR Guy believes. Here's why.

New Partnership Could Bolster Open Source Networks
2007-05-30 18:33:00
It's a small partnership that could have a big impact in the world of open source networking. Two tiny companies -- Digium and Vyatta -- have caught The VAR Guy's attention. And they deserve your attention, too.
Don?t Hang Up On Asterisk
2007-05-24 21:24:00
It has already started. Much in the way that Microsoft once dismissed Linux as a competitive threat, some traditional networking companies are telling their customers that Asterisk--the open source VoIP system--is software that businesses can't trust. That type of attitude could backfire.
