Writing Haiku with Large Snake and Dirty Jobs
2007-08-31 05:54:00 Trying to blog creatively while the Science Fiction Channel blares next to me is near impossible. Right now, one large snake is devouring a community, and the only thing that will stop it is non-fear. Oh brother. I really need to move my computer. Wait, Dirty Jobs just came on the Discovery Channel. Guess there was a commercial on SciFi. read more

The Science of, and Behind, TV's Dirty Jobs
2007-08-07 23:48:00 From Wired Science: About a week and a half ago I drove out to a recycling pier in San Francisco to meet Mike Rowe, host of the...
What We Can Learn From Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs
2007-07-27 20:14:00 Dirty Jobs is a show hosted by Mike Rowe which airs Tuesday evenings on the Discovery Channel. One of my favorite ways to unwind after a day at the office to crack open a cold one to this hour of down-to-earth goodness, and watch as Mike bonds with some of the hardest working people in ...

"Dirty Jobs" Special: How to Make Biodiesel
2007-04-26 00:10:00 Veggie DatsunIt's raining biodiesel here at GreenOptions. While perusing the 'net the other day, I came across a worthwhile piece of programming: an eight-minute segment on making biodiesel from the Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs series. What actually caught my eye wasn't the topic so much as the vehicle - a 1982 Datsun 720 pickup truck, the same old beast that I've run on biodiesel and converted to run on straight-vegetable oil (SVO). If you read my Biodiesel Mythbuster, you may remember me saying that Over time, because it's such a good solvent, biodiesel can degrade rubber fuel lines and gaskets. Most post-1990 vehicles don't have rubber lines and gaskets, but some older vehicles do. I have driven for a year now on B100 and B50 with no visible deterioration of my rubber fuel lines." The first of the following videos provides an excellent visual depiction of where these fuel hoses are. You'll see where the rubber fuel lines have been re...

Dirty Jobs: Chimney Sweeper
2007-01-03 22:39:01 Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I hope your religious or non-religious holiday treated you well. And now, on to Dirty Jobs. The first dirty job of the night is chimney sweeping. It is an extremely dirty job, and Dick van Dyke would have died of black lung years ago if Mary Poppins was real. You didn’t know it wasn’t real? I apologize. Did you know there is a National Chimney Sweeping School? You know, in case that cabinet making class at the tech college isn’t working out for you. The second job out host, Mike, goes on is lumberjacking. In the water, that is. There is 140 year old virgin timber at the bottom of lakes and rivers. They originally sunk when moving them over water to a mill. It just seems a little silly to go diving for it. Now add a couple of sharks and you have yourself an exciting occupation. Enough messing around with these young whippersnappers. It is time to mill some 600 year old timber. Wow. That’s older than me and you combined! And ...

Dirty Jobs: Hoof Cleaner
2006-08-19 16:48:02 For a, hopefully, jazzed up look at something that is probably educational, we turn to the Discovery Channel and Dirty Jobs. The title of this show couldn’t be more literal. Mike Rowe, the host, goes around the country and finds the dirtiest jobs in the country. Segment one brings us to a basalt rock quarry. They turn big rocks into smaller rocks into even smaller rocks. When you make rocks too small, they turn into dirt. If you get out a pen and paper, you can find the word “dirt” in “dirty.” After cleaning caked on dirt from a grate in a space that is hardly big enough to crawl through, our host gets to pick up big rocks with a big CAT. After that, he gets to blow some rocks up. He doesn’t seem to have that bad a gig going on yet. Rowe is pumping liquid dynamite into the ground. Wait, liqued dynamite? That sounds like a bigger threat than quicksand! How have I never had the sense to be afraid of this? Next up, Mike cleans up hippo poo. I will ca...
