Renewed Call For Disabilities Legislation: By Rolanda Epstein - Nassau, Bahamas: The Bahamas National Council For The Disabled is hoping the government comes through and brings legislation to parliament this year, which would protect the rights of people with disabilities in The Bahamas. In the Speech from the Throne last May, the new government promised a sustained campaign of awareness aimed at educating the public on the rights of the disabled. The government said early attention will also be given to the completion of the National Disability Register. Council President Sherman Smith said Friday the Council is hopeful that legislation will soon be passed. He said such legislation would prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of life, including civil rights, employment, education, housing, goods, facilities and services, including health, access to justice and access to transportation. Resource Guide for Children with Disabilities
2008-01-03 03:30:00
For the vast majority of children with reading difficulties, the problems are confined to reading. Their struggles are a tragic result of the limited and inadequate systems used for teaching reading. But for some children, the problems go well beyond reading. Typically the youngsters are termed "children with special needs." As those familiar with the children know well, the families face many challenges. They benefit greatly from knowing the resources that are available and how to access those resources. One site that provides invaluable information is www.eparent.com. Among their offerings is a yearly resource guide. The 2008 is on its way. It offers comprehensive national directory of service organizations, associations, federally funded programs, parent and training information groups, and many other resources for the special needs community. Those who want that material now can turn to the 2007 edition http://www.eplibrary.com/refere-nce1resource1anddirectories/
Disabilities Participate In Games
2007-12-09 06:56:00
How-to-help-people-with-disabil-ities-participate-in-games The golden rule is a guide to most situations in life, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It is not always easy to put ourselves in another person’s shoes and try to understand how we would feel if we were them. However, it is important to do in order to be able to adapt activities to allow for our friends or family with disabilities to participate with us. Naturally humans are social beings, regardless of physical limitation, and even many mental disabilities. Because it can be difficult for others to know how to effectively involve those who have disabilities into regular activities, here are some tips to help get started. Adapting the game At first evaluation it may not seem that someone can participate in the activity who has a mental or physical disability. All it takes is a little creativity and a willingness to help adapt the game or puzzle to fit the needs of individuals playing. On...

Who Should Represent People with Disabilities in Advertising?
2007-11-12 21:48:00
We have all heard the cliché, “There’s no such thing as a stupid question.” However, the title of this piece provides a pretty good argument against the often-used phrase. Why would there be any question about a person with a disability representing a person with a disability in an advertisement. Lest you have any doubt, let me ask these questions as a contrast:Who should represent African-Americans in ads? Who should represent women in ads? Who should represent Asian or Latino in ads? I cannot imagine anyone saying that the above minorities should have anyone other than members of their own community portraying them; not someone made up to look like them, or pretending to be them. Not today. Yet, we still see ads like this one that recently appeared in the Joliet Herald-News. Description of Graphic None of the people pictured have a disability in the picture. The guy with the white cane is sighted; the guy in the wheelchair and the one usin...

The Americans with Disabilities Act
2007-11-07 18:24:00
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed with bi-partisan support in 1990 and took effect in 1992. The Act was designed to protect "qualified individuals with disabilities" from discrimination. Activists now say that the law's power has been truncated by judicial rulings. There is strong support in the House for the ADA Restoration Act, which would reinforce the earlier law. Detractors contend that both laws are unnecessary and note that the percentage of working disabled has changed little over the past seventeen years. Many go so far as to say that the ADA is counterproductive, making employers leery of hiring candidates that could file lawsuits.

Dogs with disabilities!
2007-10-11 05:30:00
Just in the past six months or so, our neighbor dog, Saba, has had loads of trouble walking. Her back legs just don't work anymore.Gracie and I visit with Saba through the fence sometimes, when she has enough energy to get that far. And, we have been thinking a lot about pups with walking disabilities. So we did some research. Seems there are many dogs that have trouble walking, because of old age, car accidents, or birth defects. And there are many resources on the Internet just for these types of pups - to help them live happy and healthy lives. We put together a Squidoo lens on the subject to document our research. Visit the lens, tell us what you think, and be sure and add some resources you discover about the subject. And thank you to the folks that work to make our lives better!

Has Apple Forgotten People With Disabilities?
2007-09-24 10:10:00
Well, it seems so. At least, Apple has forgotten that there people with ear disabilities out there. When iPhone is held up to a cochlear implant and or a hearing aid it gives out a loud buzzing interference.Due to this problem, a group representing people with a hearing loss filed complaints with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission last month. The group is accusing Apple Inc. of not making its iPhone compatible with hearing aids. This complaint may turn pretty expensive for Apple. Results may vary from paying refunds to customers with disabilities to redesigning the device altogether. However, according to documents posted on the FCC's Web site, Apple may not be required to make changes to the iPhone. "Handset manufacturers that offer two or fewer digital wireless handsets in the U.S. need not comply with the hearing aid compatibility compliance obligations," the FCC states.Photo source: BusinessWeek.comThis post has originally been posted on iPhone.Blogvasion.com

Sexual Assaults Against Women With Disabilities
2007-08-21 14:00:00
A study presented at the recent convention of the American Psychological Association in San Francisco indicated that sexual assault on women with physical disabilities tended to be more coercive and more physically severe than assaults on women with other types of problems.   The study was based on clients from a sexual assault clinic in Toronto and compared 1,091 women with disabilities to 1,120 women without disabilities.  Of the 81 victims with physical disabilities (including motor, visual, and hearing impairments), 66.7%  suffered physical trauma during the assault, compared with 63.8% of the women without disabilities; 63.3% of the women with a psychiatric disability, and 52.2% of the women with cognitive disability of developmental delay.   19.2% of the physically disabled victims were also subjected to forced anal intercourse compared to 8.4% for women without disabilities.  In presenting her findings, Theresa Kelly, a doctoral student at t...
Making Fun Of Other People's Disabilities Is Not Cool - It's Cruel
2007-08-19 04:06:00
MamaP posted something about these 14 year old girls who were making fun of people with Tourette's Syndrome (Aug 15th post titled Tic'd off) and it made me furious. I went to YouTube to try to find it - but to no avail. I was ready to rag on these girls - and I was hoping that somehow their parents can be told of their cruel acts. Maybe not finding the particular video was a good thing because I was planning on embedding it here to "humiliate" them. But if I do that, then I would be going down to their level, and that I don't want to do. Granting that these girls did not intend to be cruel, that they were just having fun, - they need to be taught that "having fun" at the expense of someone else's humiliation is unkind.Since I did not find that particular video, I decided to make a simple post addressed to us parents to remind us to teach our kids kindness and compassion - especially to those with disabilities. If you are doing it already - great. If you have tweens and tee...

African American Women with Disabilities: An Overview
2007-06-15 16:49:00
By Eddie Glenn, Ph.D. Post Doctoral Fellowship Howard University Research and Training Center The premise of this paper is that African American women with disabilities are victims of the impact of a "triple jeopardy" syndrome: race, gender, and disability. The author makes the point that there is a dire need for research which focuses on the status, needs, and aspirations of African American women with disabilities. The research study under discussion is designed to address the issue of multiple jeopardy in which most African American women with disabilities find themselves. Introduction It is only recently that people in general have begun to hold candid discussions about disability. Even people with disabilities have always been reluctant to talk about themselves. In the past, many persons with disabilities were self-conscious. In addition, many of them refused to admit that there were differences between persons with disabilities and the non-disabled. In the African American....

Public School Cultivates Learning Disabilities
2007-02-27 16:14:06
By Mimi Rothschild Joel Turtel, author of “Public Schools, Public Menace” cites a harrowing tale of the public school’s incompetence. He was a volunteer reading instructor some time ago and was asked to help a young boy read. He was dismayed to find that the child was never taught to sound out words using phonics, but simply memorized words that were simple enough to sight read. As a result, the boy insisted on reading only certain books that he had been able to memorize. When Turtel expressed to the boy’s parents that the reason why their child has not excelled in reading is not due to a learning disability or disinterest in reading, but because he had never actually learned how to read. When the school’s administrators found out about his suggestion, they were furious and demanded that he leave the premises. This heartbreaking story is indicative of a greater problem that is endemic to the public school way. Reading is perhaps the most tangible o...

Raymond's Room: Ending the Segregation of People with Disabilities
2007-02-04 14:19:00
I was recently given the opportunity to review the unpublished galley proof of a new book scheduled for release by its publisher Training Resource Network on February 15, 2007. The book is entitled Raymond’s Room: Ending the Segregation of Adults with Disabilities. This publication was written by Dale DiLeo, a long-time colleague of mine and staunch advocate of supported employment. For those who don’t know DiLeo, he is a well-known speaker, trainer, consultant, and a publisher of books and a national newsletter called InfoLines. DiLeo is an outstanding and tireless advocate promoting the job placement and integration of adults with significant disabilities in the workforce and community. Once Raymond’s Room arrived, I thumbed through its chapter titles slowly. I knew immediately I was embarking on a journey with much familiar terrain. Take a close look at the topics DiLeo has chosen to address: Chapter One: Institutional Life Chapter Two: Labeling and the Disability Industria...
The vocation of people with severe disabilities
2006-12-06 10:14:01
Last night Kim Fabricius went to hear a lecture by the excellent scholar Frances Young. Professor Young has a severely disabled son, and her lecture was on ?The Vocation of People with Severe Learning Disabilities.? Kim gave a response afterwards, which he has posted here ? he says:Against conventional theodicies, and above all against a culture that has lost its way ? where its answer to the question, ?What are people for?? is, ?For autonomy and control, for health and beauty, for performance and productivity? ? Professor Young has lodged a considerable critique. Human beings, she says, are made for friendship, and human communities are made for hospitality. And it would seem to be the vocation of so-called disabled people to take this gospel to so-called independent, fit, and achieving folk.It is not, observe, a question of the abled bringing help to the disabled ? just the reverse: the disabled are the ones who bring help to the abled by showing that we are all, one way or anothe...
