Dr John Hislop. Vaunted ?Perfect Disciple? of Sathya Sai Baba
2011-11-06 10:38:00
Like so many devotees, especially those close to Sathya Sai Baba, ex-foremost leader of the Sathya Sai Organization (outside India), Dr John Hislop knew very well that Sai Baba told lies. Devotees, however, pass these off as, variously, "Baba's funny little ways"; "his sparing of our feelings"; his "Leelas" (meaning his 'divine sportiveness' .... When writing, they use a capital 'L'); "his perfect 'Truth', but our human imperfection" which cannot see that he is teaching us some profound lesson, for example, in learning detachment; and more such Procrustean racking of human reason and commonsense. Sai Baba long exhorted that his devotees: "Love (him) for (his) Mystery". (Of course, his editors and other devotee writers capitalized the 'h' in 'him' and 'his' ..... Hislop also well knew that many devotees were in confusion about his many lies, all his predictions which failed, as did so many of his promised cures and e.g., of placements at his university or his colleges...

What Is A Disciple? by Shalene
2007-09-18 21:38:00
What exactly does it mean to be a disciple of Christ? Does it mean to merely share the Word of God, or does it mean to share God with others? Simply put, to me, being a disciple of Christ means to not only lead other to Him, but to help others to lead even more "others" to Him. Yes, it is part of the Great Commission- Jesus' last instruction to us to share the Good News with all. Therefore, I take my role in this instruction very seriously. Because of this, I am beyond humbled to have been one of the first recipients of a brand new award being passed out. It is the "Mathetes Award", created by Dan King of Management by God to recognize those who take to heart the Great Commission and further God's Kingdom by creating more disciples for Him. According to Dan (and I trust him on this) mathetes is the Greek word for disciple. The rules for the award, as posted by it's creator are as follows:In the spirit of this award, the rules are simple. Winners of this award must pick fiv...
Have faith in God
2007-09-02 02:01:00
Your faith has saved you. Luke 7:50What does it mean to have faith.Faith is the absolute confidence in God's perfect love for you, absolute confidence in his infallible wisdom and absolute confidence in his almighty power.God demonstrated his great love toward us, that he gave us his only begotten son. Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. Is it difficult to have faith in such a wonderful God who loves us so perfectly.True faith always leads us to obedience. Let's then obey the commandments of our Lord Jesus Christ found in the pages of the New & Old testaments.
Pilates, now a discipline. Meet the disciple.
2007-08-27 18:58:00
"It's a not-for-profit professional body." Huh? Not for profit exercise? That's an oxymoron, isn't it? Lynne Robinson, the recognized Queen of Pilates, has formed an international Body Control Pilates Association that hasn't been established to grind out yet another buck from the exercise industry. She wants to turn Pilates into a science. As this Globe and Mail article The Queen of Pilates holds court explains, "The association sets a curriculum and a series of exams, both practical and written, that potential instructors must complete before going on to do apprenticeships in studios. It developed a Pilates instruction certification standard called L3, the world's first. Ms Robinson has established a curriculum of a 110 Pilates exercises, only 8 of which came down from Joe Pilates, the German-cum-Brit-cum-American who established the exercise regime after the 2nd WW that became so popular with dancers rehabing their injuries. Ms Robinson formed her Body Control Pil...
Three Certainties
2007-08-11 12:14:00
They will fight against you. They will not overcome you Iam with you to deliver you (Jer 1:19). There are three thingsthat are absolutely certain for the disciples of the Lord, as wesee in the above verse. (1) Satan and his agents will fightagainst us. (2) They will not overcome us. (3) The Lord willalways be with us to deliver us.The certainty of OppositionAs long as we are in the world, we will have to face tribulation, persecution and trials. It will never be otherwise. So we neednot expect an easy time either in our work-place or in ourpersonal life in the coming days. Days of financialdifficulties will come. So even now, we must learn to livesimply. Those who live in luxury will find things difficult in thefuture. We must be wise in saving some money for the futureso that we don?t have to depend on others. But we must neverdepend on our savings. Our trust must be in the Lord alone.God is a jealous God and He will never allow us to trust increated things. God ...

Inspiration & Devotionals :: The Cost of Being a Disciple
2007-08-04 15:43:00
Author: Eric Subject: The Cost of Being a DisciplePosted: Sat Aug 04, 2007 9:43 am (GMT -4) The Cost of Being a Disciple Dory Puffé In chapel yesterday, our speaker read Luke 14:25-33. It is about the cost of being a disciple of Jesus. Here is a portion: “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple… So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.” Our speaker talked about some new believers in a Muslim country. One met with a Christian for two years before he made the decision to turn his life over to Christ. Another spent eight months contemplating living life in a “new way,” the way of Jesus Christ, before he accepted Christ. This is often the process Muslim believers go through when they accept Christianity. They are not thinking about the things, attitudes or behavior they will have to give up. As good Muslims, they most li...
The new wine
2007-07-30 22:57:00
At the marriage in Cana, where Jesus was present, theold wine ran out. The old wine was made with humaneffort, over a period of many years - but it could not meetthe need. This is a parable of life under the law - the oldcovenant. The old wine runs out; and the Lord has to waituntil it runs out before He can give us the new wine. "Forthe Lord God says: Only in waiting for Me will you besaved. ... but you say, We will get our help from Egypt(human strength)! So you will be chased by your enemies... And the Lord is waiting for you (to come to an end ofyourself) and to come to Him, so that He can show youHis love; He will conquer you to bless you. ... Blessed areall those who wait for Him to help them'' (Isa. 30:15-18Living Bible). When we have tried and tried and tried to livein victory and failed repeatedly, this is the lesson that Godis trying to teach us: "You cannot have victory in your ownstrength." As long as you are under the law, you will beruled by sin. The chief work that ...
Weekend Update: Christianity In The Cartoons
2007-07-28 13:55:00
I ran across an article on the Lawrence Journal-World website entitled The Gospel According To The "Simpsons". The focus of the article was a book by the same title written by Jewish author, Mark Pinsky. In his book, Mr. Pinsky dissects the popular cartoon to see exactly what message is being delivered by its state of the art, computer animated, raucous characters. What Mr. Pinsky says might just surprise you.I have in the past been very dismissive of the Simpsons for a number of different reasons not the least of which is its irreverence and innuendo. After reading this article and an excerpt from Mr. Pinsky's book, however, I am inclined to be a bit more observant. Don't get me wrong, I won't go out and buy the DVD box set, or have a Simpsons party for my students (heaven forbid!). What I will do is be more careful before I assist the enemies of the church by becoming a stereotype. If anything this article and Mr. Pinsky's book should serve as a means for understanding the p...
Quotes by Sadhu Sundar Singh
2007-07-14 08:40:00
"He was searching for me before I sought Him. Christ whom I had never expected came to me. I was praying, 'If there be a God, reveal Thyself'...I was praying to Hindu gods and incarnations. But when He came there was no anger in His face, even though I had burnt the Bible three days before. None of you have ever destroyed Scripture like me. He is such a wonderful, loving, living Saviour...""There is a great difference between knowing about Jesus and knowing Him... If we only know of Jesus as a good man, a great example, it is no help to us. Those who know Him know Who He is. When we know Him everything is different and we are living in a new world -- a new atmosphere. Heaven begins on earth for us. Those who know Him know that Jesus is everything to them. They can bear witness because they have been living with Him...If we live in Him He will reveal Himself to us and we shall bear witness -- not for a day or a night only...""For the first two or three years after my conversion, I ...

Lessons From The Failures Of Others
2007-07-03 08:22:00
1. Gehazi: We read in 2 Kings, Chapter 5, that out of gratitude for his healing, Naaman, the Syrian General offered Elisha silver and gold worth nearly Eighty thousand dollars and ten fancy Syrian suits of clothing. What a temptation for a lesser man than Elisha. But Elisha turned down the offer without a moment's hesitation. Naaman was an unbeliever and a compromiser and Elisha would receive nothing from him. Gehazi had observed Elisha's attitude towards Naaman's money. But he felt that Elisha had been foolish to refuse what Naaman had offered so freely. He ran after Naaman, told a few lies and collected four thousand dollars worth of silver and two of those Syrian suits. Elisha who could see through a crooked man easily, immediately exposed Gehazi's covetousness. He told Gehazi that since he had grabbed Naaman's money, he would get Naaman's leprosy as well. He told him "therefore, the leprosy of Naaman shall cleave to you and to your descendants forever. So Gehazi went out f...
Flee from youthful lusts
2007-06-30 00:20:00
Now flee from youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace with THOSE who call on the Lord from a PURE heart. 2 Timothy 2:22God desires to fill our lives with righteousness, faith, love and peace. If we walk by the spirit, we will not carry out the desires of the sinful nature and we will have peace.God is the author of peace. If we live by our reason and senses, we will go astray but if we rely on the spirit of God, he will lead us on the paths of peace. The bible tells us that the righteous man will live by faith. How do we get faith? Faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of Christ. Read the Bible and ask God to speak to you.Obey his commandments and you will find God filling your heart with love.If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ, Repent, turn from your sins and turn to God. Confess your sin and be willing to forsake them and believe in the Lord Jesus, make him your Lord and savior. Read the Bible and follow Jesus as his disciple, every day of your life...
The New Testament :: RE: Difference Between a Disciple & an Apostle
2007-06-29 02:31:00
Author: Eric Subject: Difference Between a Disciple & an Apostle 2Posted: Thu Jun 28, 2007 8:31 pm (GMT -4) The Difference Between a "Disciple" and an "Apostle" -- Part 2 Rev. Sam Harris This question deserves two responses. Last time, we discussed the meaning of a "disciple;" now let’s take a look at the "apostle." Let me remind you of the definitions given in the previous article. 1. Disciple: Greek—mathetes, a learner or pupil. In the New Testament, it is one who accepts the instruction given to him and makes it a part of his daily living and conduct. 2. Apostle: Greek—apostolos, someone who is sent, ambassador, messenger. As we will see, Jesus chose 12 men to be His witnesses with authority. As we discussed last time, a "disciple" is a learner and follower of a teacher. The 12 men chosen by Jesus followed and learned from Him. As you read through the New Testament, you find these two words used inter...
The New Testament :: Difference Between a Disciple & an Apostle
2007-06-29 02:20:00
Author: Eric Subject: Difference Between a Disciple & an ApostlePosted: Thu Jun 28, 2007 8:20 pm (GMT -4) The Difference Between a "Disciple" and an "Apostle" -- Part 1 Rev. Sam Harris This is such a good question that I am going to answer it with two articles, one now and one in the next article. I will define the terms and then we will take an in-depth look at how they are used in Scripture. In general terms, a disciple is a follower of a teacher. Most of us can look back over our school years and point to one or two teachers who had an impact on our lives and education. We attempted to absorb all that they had to teach us. Th...
Did They Have to Die?
2007-06-07 06:09:00
By Steve SaintForty years after five missionaries lost their lives in the Ecuadorian jungle, the killers explain what really happened. The year of Christianity Today's birth also brought the death of five American missionaries in Ecuador:Nate Saint, Jim Elliot, Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, and Peter Fleming. The story of what happened onthat January day in 1956-first told in newsweeklies and Life magazine and then in numerous books anddocumentaries-became a primary narrative for the young evangelical movement, reinforcing andillustrating to the world our core ideals. Their noble sacrifice and the heroic follow-up work of family members like Rachel Saint, the sister of Nate, and Jim Elliot's widow, Elisabeth, inspired a generation of Christians-some to go to the mission field and many more to live a more mature and sacrificial Christian life. While the story is familiar, many of the details have been unknown. Why were the missionaries attacked, especially after such promising initial...
Isaiah 53

Jesus, our wonderful Lord laid down his life for us.We all like sheep wandered away. Our father in heavenlaid all our sins on Jesus so that we might be saved. How great is the love of our heavenly father.Let' s praise him. He is worthy of all our praise.Jesus died for us. Let's live for him.The Holy Spirit indwells us, let's please him. Amen!Isaiah 531 Who believes what we've heard and seen? Who would have thought God's saving power would look like this?2-6The servant grew up before God a scrawny seedling, a scrubby plant in a parched field. There was nothing attractive about him, nothing to cause us to take a second look.He was looked down on and passed over, a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand. One look at him and people turned away. We looked down on him, thought he was scum. But the fact is, it was our pains he carried our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us.We thought he brought it on himself, that God was punishing him for his own failures. But it was our sin...

Where is God, when it hurts

2007-05-11 04:00:00
It was strictly forbidden to preach to other prisoners, as it is in captive nations today. It was understood that whoever was caught doing this received a severe beating. A number of us decided to pay the price for the privilege of preaching, so we accepted the terms. It was a deal: we preached and they beat us. We were happy preaching; they were happy beating us,so everyone was happy. The following scene happened more times than I can remember. A brother was preaching to the other prisoners when the guards suddenly burst in, surprising him halfway through a phrase. They hauled him down the corridor to their "beating room". After what seemed an endless beating, they brought him back and threw him- bloody and bruised - on the prison floor. Slowly, he picked up his battered body, painfully straightened his clothing and said, "Now, brethren, where did I leave off when I was interrupted?" He continued his gospel message. From the book "Tortured for Christ By Richard Wurmbrand"For more in...
Fear not, Jesus will help you
2007-05-11 03:41:00
If you have made Jesus your Lord & Savior and if you are walking in his footsteps as a disciple, you need not fear any evil or any man. God is your shield. He is with you to help you. Genesis 15:1 You can rest in his love for you. 1 John 4:18Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 But now, thus says the Lord, your Creator.. and he who formed you, O Israel, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you. Isaiah 43:1,2 for he himself has said " I will never desert you,nor will I ever forsake you," Hebrews 13:5,6
Obedience: Its place In Holy Scripture.
2007-04-30 23:01:00
In undertaking the study of a Bible word, or of a truth of the Christian life, it is a greathelp to take a survey of the place it takes in Scripture. As we see where, and how often, and in what connections it is found, its relative importance may be apprehended as wellas its bearing on the whole of revelation. Let me try in this first chapter to prepare theway for the study of what obedience is, by showing you where to go in God's Word tofind the mind of God concerning it.1. TAKE SCRIPTURE AS A WHOLE.We begin with Paradise. In Gen. 2:16, we read: 'And the Lord God commanded the man, saying.' And later (3:11), 'Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee thatthou shouldest not eat?'Note how obedience to the command is the one virtue of Paradise, the one condition ofman's abiding there, the one thing his Creator asks of him. Nothing is said of faith, orhumility, or love: obedience includes all. As supreme as is the claim and authority of Godis the demand for obedience as...
The way of the cross
2007-04-19 06:05:00
Jesus in the four gospels asked us to deny our self will to do the will of the father each and every day. Luke 9:23-26 If we desire to become spiritual, we have to go this way. There is no other way. The way of the cross is the way to life. Jesus had a self will and he denied it every day. John 6:38 If we are to follow Jesus, we have to follow his example in denying the self life that we inherited from Adam. God arranges our circumstances in life wherein there are many opportunities to die to the self life. God uses difficult bosses, jealous coworkers, financial troubles and a host of other things to humble us. Let us gladly submit to all of God's dealings with us. When we humble ourselves under God?s mighty hand, he will exalt us over circumstances, over depression, discouragement, bad moods, jealousy, anger, over Satan, over sin etc. 1Peter5:6 Draw near to God in repentance and faith in his love for you. Surrender all at his feet and make him the Lord of y...

The Skygreen Leopards - Disciples of California

Once purveyors of bedroom-recorded lo-fi mantras, the Skygreen Leopards? fourth album finds the West Coast troupe ratcheting up the fidelity on music of blissful, if distinctly antediluvian, style. Typically, the title track?s 12-string chimes and lazily drawled harmony vocals conflate The Byrds with The Incredible String Band, while the tender, languorous ? if theologically erroneous [...]
Stories of simple truth | Master, disciple and truth
2006-12-12 03:21:03
A disciple approached his master: "For years I have been seeking illumination," he said. "I feel that I am close to achieving it. I need to know what the next step is.""How do you support yourself?" the master asked. "I haven't yet learned how to support myself; my parents help me out. But that is only a (minor) detail." "Your next step is to look directly at the sun for half a minute," said the master. And the disciple obeyed. When the half-minute was over, the master asked him to describe the field that surrounded them. "I can't see it. The sun has affected my vision," the disciple said."A man who seeks only the light, while shirking his responsibilities, will never find illumination.
