A Good Discipleship Program
2008-05-14 17:43:00
What is the best program for making good disciples? In other words, how can a person be adequately trained and prepared to be a follower of Jesus? If you check with the local Christian bookstore, you will find that the most common way to disciple someone is to take them through some sort of discipleship manual. ...

Have you started thinking about New Year?s resolutions yet? Well, if retail stores can start decorating for Christmas after Halloween, I can ask about New Year’s resolutions on December 1st! It really isn’t too early to start thinking about them! And, being a daily Bible reader should definitely be high on our list of priorities. ...
Living Generously

A few words spoken by Jesus have been on my mind lately. They are recorded in Matthew 5:38-48. (Click this link and you can read them in the three versions: TNIV, NIV and KJV.) As I?ve reflected on these verses, Eugene Peterson?s rendering has proven to be most helpful: 38-42“Here’s another old saying that deserves a second ...
Excellence in Discipleship

For those who are regular readers of management by God, you know that being about God's Word is very important to me. Since I have started working on this initiative, I have discovered that there many others that have a similar heart to share God's Word, and further His Kingdom. The role of a disciple of Christ is to carry His message to the ends of the earth. It is with this heart that I have created the Mathetes Award.Mathetes is the Greek word for disciple, and the role of the disciple (per the Great Commission) it to make more disciples. I'd like to take the opportunity to award five other bloggers with this award and badge for acting in the role of a disciple of Christ. These five all share the message in their own creative ways, and I admire them all for what they do.In the spirit of this award, the rules are simple. Winners of this award must pick five other "disciples" to pass it on to. As you pass it on, I just ask that you mention and provide links for (1)this post as t...

Swami Kriyananda?s 60th Year of Discipleship
2007-09-15 01:34:00
September 12th was the 59th anniversary of the day Swami Kriyananda met Master. We celebrated it here in India as the first day of his 60th year of discipleship. One special aspect of the day’s events is that they were organized primarily by our Indian devotees. In a sense the celebration began on Monday, because we ...

The Lost Art Of Discipleship
2007-04-09 16:32:00
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."- Matthew 28:19-20 NASBThese words were the last thing that Jesus uttered before He returned to heaven. We all know them as the "Great Commission". In this charge, Christ laid out a specific plan for what He wanted his followers to do. There is no ambiguity, there is no second guessing. Jesus wanted those who followed behind Him to make disciples. Yet, despite the self-explanatory nature of Jesus command, for many churches this passage becomes the "Great Omission"While many churches like to think that they are accomplishing this task, the hard facts are that they are failing miserably. According to Avery Willis, author of the Master Life Discipleship Program:"... the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention reported losing 569,636 in discipleshi...
The Necessity of Discipleship
2007-03-21 15:33:00
Jude 2-3"Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort [you] that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."There is definitely a great truth to be found in this passage of Scripture. Jude is writing a letter to churches full of people in which He led to the Lord. He had given all diligence to win them to Christ, but now he has a new mission for these newly saved converts. He has the responsibility of disciplining them in the Word. God wants him to take these little babies, and nurture them to grow in their knowledge of the things of God, so that they can be as fruitful as possible for His good work. This, no doubt, is a tremendous responsibility, and it is one that we have today.Looking back on the short time that I've had a relationship with Christ, I can think of a bounty of people who came to my acquain...
Discipleship as Conversion
2006-12-02 16:23:07
In a recent issue of The Victorian baptist Witness (Sepot 2006, p4) Simon Moyle said, "We see discipleship as conversion, rather than necessarily something that follows conversion".I like this statement - it expresses a conviction I have had for a long time. I believe the idea may have come from George Eldon Ladd, but the first time I saw it spelled out clearly was by Dave Andrews in Christi-Anarchy. Here he outlined the concept of open and closed sets. The traditional evangelical understanding of conversion was as a closed set. If one was anywhere outside the boundary of the set one was headed for hell, whereas being anywhere inside the boundary led to heaven. There was a well-defined set of formulae by which one could cross the boundary from outside to inside, such as "the four spiritual laws" and the "sinner's prayer", and there was usually no way to make the reverse journey - once saved, always saved! Of course, different groups had a different set of formulae. The open set idea...
