Communicating Windows 7
2008-05-27 13:09:00 Typically when Microsoft ships a new OS (like Windows Vista), we immediately start talking about the next version-which begs two questions: 1) is Microsoft working on a new version of Windows, and if so, 2) why aren't you talking about it? I thought I would spend a minute giving you an update on where we are. First, yes, we are working on a new version of Windows. As you likely know, it's called Windows 7.We are always looking for new ways to deliver great experiences for our customers. This is especially true of Windows - where we're constantly examining trends in hardware, software and services to ensure that we continue to drive the innovation that has both made Windows the world's most popular operating system and has provided a foundation on which our partners built great products and businesses. When we shipped Windows 2000, we were already working on Windows XP and we started working on Windows Vista even before we released Windows XP. So naturally, we'v...
New measures by MAS to improve the disclosure standards for participating l
2008-05-26 02:29:00 MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) will be taking recent measures to close the information gap surrounding what are known as participating life or ‘par’ policies. To recap, premiums paid by policyholders for their ‘par’ plans go into a common pool called the ‘par’ fund and is invested in a variety of assets, with bonuses paid out from surpluses. Most insurers did not disclose the returns or losses of their funds, the target returns and payout levels, or the funds’ investment strategy and allocation mix. With the new measures implemented since March, all this is set to change. They include a revised benefit illustration with two projected rates of returns, which is meant to help policyholders understand that cash bonuses are not guaranteed and will vary depending on several factors. Also, it is now compulsory for insurers to disclose how they invest the premiums collected as well as their past performance. The changes reflect the industry...

Hodges' model: a tool for progressive disclosure
2008-05-04 10:30:00 [Warning! This post extends (plays havoc with) the meaning of progressive disclosure.]Trying to get on the surf board of the latest web-programming kind is proving to be very difficult. For many years now and as acknowledged on W2tQ the four links pages - one per care domain - have become a monster in motion. As the user scrolls down the links pages the sense of info overload becomes overwhelming. That is assuming they do scroll. There is no prompt apart from the right-hand scroll bar suggesting 'more'. Even though the links are only sitting in html tables, the experience is not exactly an exemplar of user interface design. It is poor on other counts too:The arrangement of the rows and categories are mine.Yes, reveal the holistic bandwidth of the care knowledge domains, but whatever happened to Socratic dialogue, discovery and subtlety? The user should be able to have a dialogue with the system - with Hodges' model. The holistic aspects should be revealed gradually, an act of dis...
