are there any natural remedies or cures for gastroesophageal relfux disease
2009-09-21 22:48:00
I have been suffering from this severely. What kinds of foods are recommended to eat? Are there any natural cures? Does medication actually work? I am taking Prevacid. DGL-DeGlysserized(sp) Licorice tablets. Chew two 20 minutes before meals, if I remember correctly. It forms a protective coating around the stomach and esophagus. Other soothing helpful remedies often include plaintains and marshmallow. Additional consideration - according to my Naturopath he says often the cause of reflux is not the excess of acid but quit the contrary. The valve needs a high level of acid to signal it to close tight. Not enough acid and the valve doesn't close properly and the acid leaks out. He frequently prescribes hydrochloric acid for people to take which usually resolves the problem. Tis true, though a little scary.

Latest Lyme Disease Info and Treatment for Dogs
2009-08-23 21:04:00
Cait’s little boy hasn’t been feeling so well. Feverish, tired and achy, all Wink wants to do is rest quietly. It’s sad to see this normally effervescent little guy so under the weather. (Though, in a day or so, he should be back to his normal self because he’s been started on Doxycycline, the antibiotic of choice for Lyme.) Wink has been unlucky enough to contract Lyme Disease. I say unlucky because once a dog is infected with Lyme, it can never be fully cured of it, at least at the present time. Let’s hope that changes in the not-too-distant future. Since I live in an endemic area, and every dog I’ve had since living in this house (going on two decades) has become infected–despite my best efforts–I’ve made it a mission to keep up with the latest research and effective protocols. For the Cliff Notes Version (continue reading after this section if you’re interested in more in-depth info below) First! Statistics indicate th...

PTSD raises heart disease risk in Iraq war vets
2009-08-05 18:10:00
Veterans who come home from Iraq and Afghanistan with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health diagnoses are hit with a double whammy: They also have greater risk factors for heart disease, according to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association. PTSD related to military service has been linked to heart disease in the past, but, to the authors? knowledge, the present study is the first to examine the association for veterans of the current Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Given the time frame of the recent wars, the authors of the study did not look at heart attacks or other events, but examined risk factors for heart disease instead. PTSD and other mental disorders, such anxiety disorder, more than doubled the risk of tobacco use, for example, which is a well-known risk factor.

Soybean Product May Be Of Benefit In Preventing Alzheimer's Disease
2009-02-21 09:32:00
Soybean is an annual plant that has been used in China for 5,000 years as a food and a component of drugs. Soy contains significant amounts of all the essential amino acids for humans, and so is a good source of protein. Soybeans are the primary ingredient in many processed foods, including dairy product substitutes. In this post, Dr. Jane Philpott tells you a benefit of soybean: preventing Alzheimer?s disease. You may also visit her Nutrition and Cookery Blog to read more posts on health espeacially nutrition. Scientists in Taiwan have published a paper in the February 2009 edition of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry indicating that an enzyme, nattokinase, which is found in a fermented soybean product called natto, has powerful ability in lab experiments to prevent formation of the clumps of tangled protein (amyloid fibrils) observed in Alzheimer?s disease. More than 20 unrelated proteins can form amyloid fibrils in the body, which are related to various diseases, ...

Rapid menopause can increase the risk of heart disease
2009-02-06 00:30:00
A study conducted by the Los Angeles Atherosclerosis of 203 women between the ages of 45 and 60 determined that those who transitioned from being premenopausal to fully postmenopausal within three years had a greater buildup of fatty plaque in their carotid arteries. This placed them at an increased risk for a higher rate of "preclinical atherosclerosis" ? the narrowing of arteries due to thickening of their artery walls.Of the 203 women, 52 were premenopausal, 20 were perimenopausal and 131 were postmenopausal. None had prior cardiac disease. The participants were first evaluated as they entered the study, then again at two 18-month intervals. Evaluations were not made using such subjective factors as hot flashes, but rather on carotid intimal-media thickness (cIMT) measurements and objective measures of menopausal status based on hormone levels and physiologic changes."We know that more fatty plaque accumulation predicts future heart attacks and strokes, but this is our first vent...

Treating gum disease in diabetics
2009-01-29 01:59:00
A new report shows that treating gum disease in patients who have diabetes with procedures such as cleanings and periodontal scaling is associated with 10 to 12 percent lower medical costs per month. The findings are encouraging but the study was not designed to firmly establish cause and effect, said George Taylor, University of Michigan associate professor of dentistry, who also has an appointment in epidemiology in the U-M School of Public Health. Taylor led the research project to investigate whether routine, non-surgical therapy for gum disease is associated with lower medical care costs for people with diabetes........
Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease linked
2009-01-29 01:59:00
Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes and celiac disease appear to share a common genetic origin, scientists at the University of Cambridge and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, have confirmed. Their findings, which are reported in this week's edition of the New England Journal (NEJM), identified seven chromosome regions which are shared between the two diseases. The research suggests that type 1 diabetes and celiac disease may be caused by common underlying mechanisms such as autoimmunity-related tissue damage and intolerance to dietary antigens (foreign substances which prompt an immune response)........

Kawasaki Disease
2009-01-05 18:20:00
According to the American Heart Association, more than 4,000 cases of the disease are diagnosed annually in the United States. It occurs more often in boys of Japanese and Korean descent, but has been identified in children of all ethnicities and races, Alenick said. The danger of Kawasaki syndrome is that it can cause large aneurysms in the blood vessels that feed blood to the heart, said Alenick.“Kawasaki doesn’t come in degrees of severity, but it varies in that it may cause no aneurysms, small aneurysms, moderate aneurysms or giant aneurysms,” he said. “Giant aneurysms are more common in babies. But it’s the aneurysms that form in the vessels and the arteries that feed the heart that have the potential to cause a fatal heart attack.”The disease was first identified in Japan in 1967 by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki, and the cause of the illness is still unknown, Alenick said. There also is no blood test to identify the illness. Instead, patients are given a clinical diagnos...

Gum disease tied to worse mental function
2008-11-28 16:10:00
People with gingivitis (gum disease) have worse mental function than their peers whose gums are in better shape, a new analysis of US data shows. The findings raise the possibility that system-wide inflammation due to gum disease could have harmful effects on brain function. However, because the study only looked at a single time point it could not gauge whether or not there is a causal relationship between oral health and cognitive performance. Older people with bad teeth are more likely to have dementia and cognitive impairment, Dr. Robert Stewart of the Institute of Psychiatry in London and colleagues note, but it isn?t known whether a similar relationship is present in younger people, and whether factors that can affect both dental health and mental function such as heart disease, high blood pressure or smoking may be involved.
