Autism and Mitochondrial Disorders
2008-05-29 02:53:00
Features Children with Autism Some children with autism may have a genetic defect that affects the muscles, according to research presented at the American Academy of Neurology 60th Anniversary Annual Meeting in Chicago, in April. The study looked at 37 children with autism spectrum disorders who were evaluated for mitochondrial disease, which causes muscle weakness and prevents a child from being able to participate in physical activities and sports. Mitochondrial disease occurs when genetic mutations affect the mitochondria, or the part of the cell that releases energy.A total of 24 of the children, or 65 percent, had defects in the process by which cells produce and synthesize energy in the muscles, or oxidative phosphorylation defects in the skeletal muscles."Most children with autism spectrum disorders do not have recognizable abnormalities when you look at genetic tests, imaging, and metabolic tests," said study author John Shoffner, MD, owner of Medical Neurogenetics, LLC ...

OTHER HORMONAL DISORDERS
2008-05-21 23:28:00
Finally, we turn to the common endocrine glands that occasionally produce a disease. Many people are concerned about the function of the thyroid gland. This endocrine organ, located at the base of the neck just below the ?Adam?s apple? (larynx) is an important regulator of the metabolism of the body. Its overactivity results in characteristic symptoms, such as a rapid pulse, bulging of the eyes, nervousness, tremor, and diarrhea.Tumors of the thyroid gland, as well as the overproduction of the brain hormone stimulating the gland to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormone may cause these problems. Blood tests are available to determine the level of thyroxine, the major hormone, as well as others circulating in the system.Although stress may be a precipitating factor in the development of hyperthyroidism, a failure to respond to the recommended change in lifestyle with increased rest and physical exercise, should lead a person to seek medical counsel, as surgery is occasionally i...

All subjects who scored significantly high on the depresson questionnaire at the one year mark (T2) were matched with low- or middle-scoring respondents according to age and gender.  A subset of 345 subjects were diagnostically assessed by face-to-face interviews (mean age=14.9 years) and then reassessed after five years (T3) using telephone interviews and questionnaires. There were 265 subjects tested with a participation rate of 76.9%. The results indicated that cognitive symptoms were predominant among suicide attempters, regardless of age. 2008-04-23 07:43:00
The month of May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Mental Health Association.Mental Health Awareness Month, observed throughout May in the United States, increases awareness about mental illness such as depression. Mental illness is a significant health concern and, if left untreated, can have serious consequences. Depression is the most common mental illness, and recent studies have demonstrated the link between depression and poor sleep. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) warns those suffering from a sleep disorder to see a sleep specialist for treatment without delay, and to not allow it to escalate into a more serious, and potentially life-threatening, health concern. It is now well established that insomnia is a risk factor for depression.Donna Arand, PhD, clinical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Kettering Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and research assistant professor at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, ad...
