The Chicago Park District presents Movies in the Parks
2011-06-26 20:05:00
I've written about my love for the (mostly) fabulous Park District programming in the past. During the summer months, The CPD offers Chicago families everything from summer camps to sports programs and local watering holes. But I think that my favorite summer offering is the Movies in the Parks Program. I just like everything about this idea. Grab a picnic blanket, some snacks and drinks and head out to your local park to enjoy a movie under the stars with other neighborhood families. What's not to like about this great family experience?
Bambenek Announces for 52nd District Ill. State Senate
2011-06-15 15:00:00
On Wednesday, 6/15/11, I will be announcing my run for the Republican nomination for the State Senate for the 52nd District currently held by Democrat Mike Frerichs. After having spoken with many of you and others around the district and state, I have been honored and humbled by the outpouring of support. Together, I know we can bring this seat back home to the Republican Party. It goes without saying the level of harm that years of Democratic Party governing have caused this state. Many companies have left Illinois to never return, crushing tax increases, billions of unpaid bills, and the list goes on. The only way this changes is by changing the people in Springfield. The good news is,...
Suburban District Sues Parents For Tuition
2011-06-08 17:45:00
The latest illustration of the inequities and general ridiculousness of our system of local school districts and property taxes comes from Oak Park River Forest, just west of Chicago.  District officials are suing a family for living out of district and sending their kids to OPRF high school a couple of years ago, according to the Sun Times (District claims family lives out of town, sues for $30K in tuition).  Hey, at least they haven't put the parents in jail, as was done with another case earlier this year in Ohio.  Times like these I want Rev. Meeks back, so he can bring busloads of parents and register them.  Only brilliant theater like that can break through the fog.  ...
An Interview With Todd Rokita, Indiana's Fourth District
2011-05-28 18:30:00
-By Warner Todd Huston (This interview was originally a part of the RightPundits.com interview series of the incoming GOP freshmen.) Interview with freshman Representative Todd Rokita of Indiana's Fourth Congressional District (Rep.-Elect at time of interview). Being here in Chicago right adjacent to Rokita's turf, I was already familiar with his work as Indiana's Secretary of State and so when the RP team offered me an interview with him, I jumped at the chance. Rokita made quite a stir in the Hoosier state with his idea of requiring voters to present a photo ID before they were allowed to vote. This law was a campaign promise he made as he ran for the Secretary of State's office. It was a...

Illinois 2nd District Voters Keep Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr Strong !
2011-05-26 06:33:00
DESPITE PUNDITS AND NEGATIVE MEDIA ANALYSIS, 2ND DISTRICT VOTERS KEEP CONGRESSMAN JESSE JACKSON JR STRONG !!   During the last 2010 elections, candidates who opposed Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr all proclaimed that the voters of the district were finally fed up with Jackson's representation, and that accompanied so many local and national media pundits who also proclaimed that "Jackson was in political trouble," and voters could not escape all the negative media attributed to Jackson's name in the Obama Senate seat scandal and the front page stories about his marital problems all aimed at setting the stage for voters to unseat Jackson. But then election day finally came and the voters of the 2nd District gave Jackson his largest voting victory...
Is Illinois 26th District a "Pay To Play" District? Insider Polit
2011-05-15 02:48:00
Is the Illinois 26th District a "Pay To Play" Seat Now?? I just got a call that a candidate from the University of Chicago who has raised money for Barack Obama, new 4th Ward Alderman Will Burns, State Senator Kwame Raoule and many of the Committeemen voting and other politicians in the district is being chosen to fill the Will Burns vacancy over Ranoule Tatum, Attorney Al Hofeld, Jr and others with more proven grassroots records.!! Guess the more things change the more they stay the same UNTIL voters get to speak !  Serving the people seems to get no rewards for when it appears that it's more important to raise money for the politicians is what qualifies you more. ! Chicago Park District Swimming Pools: One of the things I totally take for
2011-05-11 05:17:00
In typical Chicago fashion SUMMER hit us this afternoon with all the force of a wet towel in the face. Yesterday was spring, the day before that was winter. Today BAM! SUMMER! 86 degrees and I left the house this morning wearing a black turtleneck. Every year SUMMER takes me by surprise. Even if I read the weather report, I am in serious denial about ever being able to leave the house without a coat. I didn't even layer! Black turtleneck all the way.Not that I'm complaining. I love it.Anyway, all this hot weather has me thinking about swimming. Did you know that Chicago has a whole bunch of free swimming pools, both indoor and outdoor?  Take THAT you suburban...

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-11), a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Congresswoman Judy Biggert (IL-13), a member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee this week toured together the Dresden Generating Station as well as the General Electric (GE) facility in Morris, IL. In addition, Kinzinger toured the Lyondell Basell Plant, also in Morris. Congressman Kinzinger represents a congressional district that is home to three nuclear power plants, hydropower plants, ethanol and biodiesel plants, and two oil refineries. Bensenville seeks a mulligan on TIF district
2011-04-04 22:36:00
If you're looking for easy access to O'Hare Airport and Chicago's expressway grid in your next home, it doesn't get much better than Bensenville. And, if you're looking to your municipal government as a source of entertainment it also doesn't get much better than Bensenville, as you read between the lines in this Trib Local article. Bensenville used TIF funds to build a long-abandoned golf course on a former landfill site, and is now seeking to extend the TIF to redevelop the property. That's just one of several Bensenville TIFs that local taxpayers may not find so amusing. If you search price-reduced homes for sale in Bensenville at Redfin, one of the steeper discounts (60% off the original list...

Why Did 17th District's Schilling Vote For 2 Pro-Union Amendments?
2011-03-14 21:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Newly minted Republican Representative Bobby Schilling from Illinois' 17th district recently voted in favor of two pro-union amendments in Congress and the votes have caused some folks to go scratching their heads in trying to figure out why he did it. Schilling ran as the business-oriented candidate against long-time Democrat incumbent Phil Hare, so his two pro-union votes are odd in light of his late campaign rhetoric. So, the Quad-City Times contacted Schilling's office to find out what was going on. Schilling's office replied that one of the votes was simply a mistake. But the second vote Schilling stands up for unapologetically....

District 63 planning to cut budget by eliminating gifted program, art and m
2011-03-02 01:39:00
District 63, which covers Morton Grove, Niles, Park Ridge, and Des Plaines, is planning on making $1.6 million in budget cuts. Some of the recommended cuts: changing start times at three schools to eliminate single bus runs, saving an estimated $350,000reducing special education out-of-district placements, saving $237,000eliminating the gifted program, saving $184,641eliminating staff from the social work department, speech pathologists, literary specialists, and psychologists, saving neary $400,000I realize that being $1.7 million in debt would necessitate the need for cuts; but I can't help but echo Helen Lovejoy for a second: Won't someone please think of the children? In addition to eliminating the gifted program, there have been discussions to eliminate music and art programs.I don't know what the solution...
Elmhurst school district slashing its budget
2011-02-28 23:24:00
A number of west suburban school districts have been raising taxes to close budget gaps, while others are considering major program reductions. According to Trib Local, Elmhurst District 205 is among the group considering cuts - $3 million in cuts. The list of programs most able to sustain cuts, according to the committee that studied the issue, includes several that might have a major impact on college admissions for students attending York Community High School, including interscholastic sports and music. If particular school programs are a factor when you're searching for your next home, it's a good idea to monitor those programs closely by reading local media online. Unpleasant surprises in the form of program cutbacks can be especially harsh...

Shane Cultra Takes Rutherford's 53rd District State Senate Seat
2010-11-21 17:18:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Dan Rutherford was the State Senator from the 53rd District, but with his recent election to our state treasurer's office, that left his seat empty. Since a Republican held that seat the local Republican Party was given the task of choosing someone to replace Rutherford and fill out his term. After much wrangling and many hats in the ring, the Party chose Shane Cultra of Onarga to be the man sent to Springfield. It was a crowded field of nine Republicans vying to take Dan Rutherford's empty seat. In the running were Gary Manier, David Zimmerman, and John Ackerman of Tazewell County; Matt Sorenson of McLean County; Jason Barickman, and John Bambenek of Champaign County; Scott...

Red Seal Homes to fill in the Villa District's open space with Avondal
2010-10-25 23:11:00
If you've ever been to the Villa District in Irving Park, you've probably noticed a wedge of undeveloped land bounded by Hamlin and Avondale avenues, anchored by one lonely new-construction home. After looking at Chicago Agent's events calendar last week, I learned that Red Seal Homes intends to build 19 more homes there, and is holding some sort of grand opening event for the development on Thursday. Avondale Closeout (seriously, that's what they're calling this -- it's even the name of the LLC heading the project) will open with a phase of nine homes (PDF), each built to order. Each of Red Seal's seven different home designs comes in two sizes -- 2,238 or 2,564 square feet -- and...
10/13 "Moneybomb" for Rev. Hayes For Congress (2nd District)
2010-10-13 22:51:00
From the Midwest Regional College Republicans on behalf of Hayes for Congress... This is the year for GOP pick-ups in [what were once] "safe" Democrat seats! In the last comparable year (1994), Chicago powerhouse Dan Rostenkowski was [shockingly!!] defeated for re-election, by his Republican opponent. [LA Times: GOP 'David' knocks off 'Goliath'] We now have another situation, in which a scandal plagued Democrat Congressman can be ousted. Jesse Jackson, Jr. has a 72% UNFAVORABLE rating! Leading pollster & analyst Dick Morris said that IL's 2nd Congressional district is now in play due to the amazing effort of GOP nominee Rev. Isaac C. Hayes, and the sex and dirty money scandals of incumbent Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. Rev. Hayes needs your...

(14th District) Hultgren Says Repeal Obamacare
2010-08-29 21:16:00
The Daily Herald reports on Republican Randy Hultgren's ideas on Obamacare as he races to the finish line to become the congressman from the 14th District. Hultgren told attendees of a luncheon in St. Charles last week that changes created in the new law do nothing to address the cost of health care. He said he would've voted against both the major Democratic versions of the law and will work to undo "Obamacare." "I think Republicans blew it on this," Hultgren said of the new law. "But I think Democrats blew it even more. We need to get rid of what we've got. Let's repeal it." Hultgren said he's particularly disappointed in what's become known as the "1099 provision" of...

Meet Adam Baumgartner, GOP Candidate for the State Senate (40th District)
2010-08-21 17:00:00
A note from the Republican State Senate Campaign Committee of Illinois... During the past year, Illinois' debt and bill backlogs have continued to climb, even as state spending continues virtually unchecked. The state's Democrat leaders response is to push for tax increases and increased borrowing as a way to solve Illinois' fiscal problems. As a small business owner, Adam Baumgartner knows that increasing taxes and revenue gimmicks are not the way for Illinois to rebuild its economy. The owner of six businesses employing more than 50 people, Springfield needs Adam's job-creating skills and commonsense approach to management. As Director of the Peotone Chamber of Commerce, he understands the impact burdensome taxes and fees have on the state's business community--and, as...

2010-08-17 14:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston On August 8, Representative Randy Ramey of the 55th District told an audience at the Tri-County Tea Party that he'd introduce a law in Illinois that mirrors Arizona's anti-illegal immigrant law. Ramey told the crowd that in August he would be introducing the Arizona-like law here in Illinois "in the next few weeks." On what that law means, Ramey said, "We're not pulling people off the streets, we're not pulling them out of ice cream stores, we are not taking them out of their houses." "If you break the law, they're going to ask you for your identification. If you don't have your identification then they can start asking questions about your naturalization and are you...
