Etymology of A Linux Distro
2008-04-06 18:22:00 Computing is fun! Well at least thats until Microsoft drove it out of the equation. I mean with Windows everything is just bland, monotonous, and just ordinary. Even it’s name is such a snooze-fest! The whole idea of window computing by no mean exclusive to Microsoft, it has been around for quite some time, one could argue that it isn’t that “earth shattering” of an invention. So why name your flagship product after a technology that’s not yours and has been around for quite sometime? Beats me!

This new small Linux distro could be huge
2008-04-03 14:21:00 In this week's Distrowatch, I read about a new, small Linux distribution called SliTaz GNU/Linux that packs itself into 25 MB of space, loads and runs quickly -- and entirely into memory with 128 MB of RAM -- and can even run with 16 MB of RAM. Sounds a lot like Damn Small Linux and Puppy, but there's always room for one more project that runs like the proverbial wind on new hardware (SliTaz features a modern 2.6.24 kernel) and keeps the old hardware I use working as well as it can.

The Distro Journey Has Begun: OpenSuSE 10.3
2008-02-09 15:21:00 I have started a journey of sorts as I have stated not too long ago. I decided to try multiple distributions in order to see what features were good, what ones were not, and if an all star distribution were to be made, which features would, in my view, make the cut. The first part of what is going to sound disturbing to a few at first, because of the issue of “selling out.” However, allow me to explain.

KDE 4 - Which Distro will be the first to Offer KDE 4?
2007-12-09 01:27:00 I am not a KDE user, but used to be, and after seeing so much about KDE4 I am really thinking about start using it again. But the question Beineri ask is. Which Distro will be first to ship KDE4? According to him as soon as it is released lots of distributions will start to offer it, well maybe that will not occur with my favorite Linux Distro (Debian) even though I am using Lenny in my Laptop. Maybe Fedora, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Sabayon and others like those will offer KDE4 as soon as it is available, also CentOS is another issue, theses Systems, Gentoo, CentOS, Debian, which are more focused on stability will not offer KDE 4 as soon as it is available, but others focused on Desktop applications, as I said, Fedora, Ubuntu, Mandriva, will offer it as soon as possible. That is of course my humble opinion.

Time Line of Linux distro for 1992-2007
2007-10-22 11:39:00 It was started a few years ago with Linus Torvald' announcement:"Hello everybody out there using minix - I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like GNU) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things). I've currently ported bash (1.08) and gcc (1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-) Linus (PS. Yes - it?s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc.), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that?s all I have :-(.?And today it?s timelin...

VST/VSTi support in Linux 64Studio Musician distro
2007-10-08 17:46:00 VST and VSTi support can be hit and miss on free software systems, but some of the most popular plugins can be made to work well. In this how-to we describe installation of the Native Instruments B4 II Hammond organ emulator. The plugin is stable and CPU usage averages around 15% on a low-end Turion CPU, which is acceptable for a soft synth. Here's what to do on a 32-bit (i386) system. (Getting this to run smoothly on a native AMD64 install is going to take some work, but we're looking at it.)1. Remove any current B4 installation, if you've used Wine or VSTs before. The B4 II is a great improvement over the original B4.2. In Synaptic, open the Settings -> Repositories window and check you are using the 64 Studio testing branch, version 2.1~pre1 or later. Click 'Mark all upgrades', then 'Apply'. Then install the wine, wineasio and msttcorefonts packages. Once the installation is complete, close Synaptic.3. As your normal user, not root, run these commands in a terminal:# regsvr...
