Elimize geçen en eski örneği ilk Müslüman Türk devleti olan Karahanlılar’ın egemen oldukları bölgede, XI. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında,hakaniye lehçesiyle yazılmış olan bu edebiyat daha sonra Azeri ve Türkiye lehçelerinin yaşadığı bölgelere de yayılarak,XIX.yüzyılın ortalarına kadar sekiz yüzyıl sürmüştür.
