Instead of getting specific with it, I just say I’m from the Syracuse, NY area. Now, depending on where I am, the response ...

2008-05-27 08:08:00 First, the quick story. Monkhouse Monday: Dementia, Diversity and Eldercare
2008-05-06 18:10:00 [Editor's Note: (Below is this week's edition of 'Monkhouse Mondays', accidentally postponed to Tuesday -- Sorry Christa!) Dr. Thomas has invited Eden Alternative's Europe Coordinator Christa Monkhouse to guest-post on a weekly basis from across the Big Pond. Stay-tuned for regular updates on 'Monkhouse Mondays'.] Persons with Dementia (PwD), do they need "Special Care“ or simply to be part of our "Cultural Diversity?“ Presenting the Eden Philosophy to varied audiences of professionals I am often asked: "Which model of care do you use for people with dementia?“, implying that surely they must be treated "specially“, given the proliferation of "special care units“. My answer, informed by experience is: "Intentional and informed diversity-management.“ What do I me...

Diversity Initiatives & Job Boards
2008-04-29 15:47:00 There was a discussion on ERE's Diversity Forum regarding the lack luster performance (is that an accurate term for a job board?) of diversity job sites. Now, I do keep up on what sites are out there. Ethnicity specific, gender specific, disability or veteran specific, all the way to total inclusion (which would make it supposedly like all the others I suppose). But there is a lingering misconception that a diversity job board will magically bring in diversity candidates. I can't tell you how wrong that is and how frustrating it is to me as someone who specializes in diversity recruiting. I think some people just don't get it. Some companies are tight fisted with the dollars and don't want to put their money where their mouth is as far as diversity initiatives go. Recruiters on the average don't care about diversity because their objective it to fill the job by any means necessary. So here are some thoughts on including job sites in diversity initiatives.Job boards of an...

Cape Verde offers diversity to investors
2008-03-31 02:00:00 Foreign property buyers have been told of the diverse range of attractions that can be found in the Cape Verde islands. The west African archipelago was praised by the Irish Independent for offering features such as beautiful beaches, clear blue water and year-round sunshine. However, the country was said to offer more than physical attractions, as it also has a growing and potentially lucrative property investment market.According to the newspaper, the consistently good weather makes property in Cape Verde a better option than places such as Bulgaria and Croatia, as it has a longer holiday season. Therefore, there is demand for rental property over a greater period of time. The newspaper commented: "Unlike some of the emerging markets in Eastern Europe, Cape Verde's climate virtually guarantees investors an all-year-round return."According to Sarah Brown from NuBricks.com, accessibility improvements have led to the country attracting a record number of foreign visitors.

Thoughts on Wright: My Hope for Diversity
2008-03-28 01:53:00 Okay, I admit it—I’m on a roll with this blog thing. Maybe it’s because it gives me a way to clear my head in a format that allows me to hear your clear thoughts as well. It’s been busy, busy, busy. My schedule since returning from Trinidad and Venezuela has been like the blurring scenery watched through the window of a race car and I’ve been at break neck speed since returning. Yesterday was no different. What made yesterday note-worthy for me is the climate of things here in Dallas. Yesterday, Reverend Jeremiah Wright was slated to speak at a local church, and ended up having to cancel his appearance. Reverend Wright, in case you aren’t following US political news, is the former pastor to Senator Barack Obama. The media recently aired a controversial message of his in an attempt to discredit, or at least question, Senator Obama and his allegiance to his former Pastor. Rev. Wright’s message points out some of his views about our nation...
